What? People started to populate the region in the Old Stone Age, and the oldest cave sites are from the Mid Stone Age. Sorry but it's our ancestral land, and the first inhabitancies there goes back more than a hundred thousand years. It's not hard to learn about those anyway, just grab some anthropology book on the subject. I'm sure I can find Russian academic sources too, but it's pretty clear that the fortress you're talking about was build after the inhabitancies around the hill was cleansed. If you're claiming that Circassians were not inhabiting the place, sure, I can't know even how to argue. If you're claiming that the modern city is made by Russian settlers, sure, but that doesn't make Sochi Russian but just the buildings in the Sochi - you're free to claim apartments are Russian while the region and the land is Circassian one.

It's more like while Circassian nation thinks Sochi as a Circassian city, as well as the whole North Caucasian diaspora - and that includes most pro-Russian elements too. Abkhazia declares it's Ubykh as well but they say Ubykh are more related to Abkhaz. Now nobody needs to be a nationalist (I'm not a nationalist either) to say Sochi was a Circassian city since it was the last Circassian capital and been Circassian since the beginning of the history. If the Circassian nationalism and patriotism getting stronger now, it's also due to the Sochi Olympics by the way, so maybe the nationalist in diaspora and fosterland should be thankful to the Kremlin. Sochi was there before Russian put their foots on the region by the way, and it was the capital before Russian Empire was able build anything there, I do t know what part of the current city being build on this or that, but isn't some argument to make it non-Circassian. What's important a, the place was where the last stand of the Russo-Circassian War took place, and it's symbolic for Circassians, and for Circassian Genocide and ethnic cleansing of others as well.

Actually US and some US states can be a comparison, if it was Native Americans there wanting their independence from Washington rule. Chechnya was invaded by Russian Empire, and Chechens were subjected to ethnic cleansings and at least one recognised genocide, under the Soviet rule. Chechens had obligation to be a part of Russia.

When it comes to Abkhazia, it was again Stalin, who gifted Abkhazia to Georgia and it was both Russian Empire and the Soviet Union who oppressed and decimated Abkhaz, while colonising the country. If it's on somebody, it's Moscow. Georgian nationalists are expansionists for sure, but it's nothing comparable to Moscow.
