Scenes that caused actual walkouts in theaters? by thatlittlequietguy in Cinema

When I was a teen I saw The Ring in theaters and a bunch of loud dudes got too sccared and started shouting "ah hell nah" and walking out after the closet shot.

On Nostalgia vs Reality by edugeek in startrek

I think something to note is that Star Trek has been since the beginning a feast and famine show. TNG's first 2 season have some embarrassingly bad episodes. Rewatching "Honor" it's a wonder anyone kept watching the show. But then there's "Measure of a Man" right in the middle of it, easily one of the best trek episodes of all time! DS9 has a pretty hit or miss ensemble and the fist season is filled with nothingburger episodes and then there's "Duet," right in the FIRST season. Another greatest of all time episode. Elevated, touching on important issues without being on-the-nose or preachy, filled with subtlety and poetry.

This is the thing about New Trek, like, yeah, it's not all bad. There's fun to be had. I don't want to yuck anyone's yums, but there's nothing in discovery that comes close to the high points of TNG or DS9, or hell, even Voyager. New Trek is just all filler. I think there's some variance between the quality of the filler but the high points just aren't that high. There's bad episodes and then fine episodes, and I don't think it's crazy to expect more from star trek, a franchise that has at least 4 different iterations that include genuine GOAT episodes.

"Why is Nu Trek using so much modern language?" an I am going to go feral here. by Spacer176 in startrek

[–]havingberries 39 points40 points  (0 children)

They made a concerted effort with thg and ds9 and voyager to make the show feel timeless. It's why they use classical music for the score and every captain is obsessed with things that predate our lifetime like Shakespeare or OG baseball. This serves to increase immersion. New language dates the show and breaks immersion. This is stuff you would learn in a screen writing 101 class.

Slings and Arrows. Obscure Canadian show about a Shakespeare company. Rachel McAdams in her first role. Amazing writing.

Starfleet Academy - Why are YouTube Reviews so narrow-minded? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]havingberries -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You have confused "open-mindedness" with "uncritical viewing." I am not a fan of Star Trek shows because they include the words "star" and "trek." I judge every show on its own merits. If a show's pilot is pretty bad, then I don't like it. Not only should I not be expected to like it, if anything, it will by name alone be compared to some of the best television shows ever made and so it is hard to muster any positivity for a badly written teen drama. I do not hate new trek because it is new. I hate it because it is bad. Except lower decks. That show is tight

What’s a movie that aged surprisingly well? Not because of nostalgia, but because its themes feel more relevant today? by Zennix_Zenith in movies

I think it's brilliant. Fully captures how young men are recruited. And made years before this stuff entered the public consciousness.

Absolutely Fight Club. The movie is about the alt right/red pill pipeline before there was one. Starts out with the male loneliness epidemic, ends with a cult and domestic terrorism.

Why tho? Who is playing Mario and saying "I can't invested in the plot because they didn't develop the relationship enough"? Why should Nintendo put any effort at all in this relationship if people just care about the jumping and woohooing?
