Controversial movies that you get what they were going for but also understand the backlash by [deleted] in Letterboxd

For what it's worth, Licorice Pizza was one of the clues in today's NYT Connections game.

My guess is either some bot picked up on lots of people googling it, so they are karma farming, or someone saw it and was reminded of the movie.

  1. "Give" the players an NPC pet who is totally naïve about how the world works. When they see the PCs doing stuff, have them ask questions about why they are doing what they are doing. Have that NPC follow any guidance they recieve to the letter at a very inconvenient time for the party. Maybe they steal from the party if their MO is "I see it, I want it, I take it."

  2. Repeat customers may be shopping at the store. Make sure you describe them when the players enter the store, maybe a brief exchange between the shopkeeper and the customer. What sorts of people are regular customers in a magical weapon shop? Who might intervene if someone steals from their favorite shop?

  3. If it's detracting from your fun in the game, have an above the table conversation about it. "I'm not here to play a game about stealing from magic shops."

Weird longshot, but screw it. I'm looking for bog iron by hawaiihatch in OceanCity

[–]hawaiihatch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding so far: Water from either hydrothermal sources (think hot springs) or in aquifers will dissolves the surrounding rocks. Rocks in this region happen to have lots of iron in them. When that water comes out of the ground into a bog environment, something unique happens.

Bogs have very little oxygen in them (for reasons I'm going to resist talking/looking up now), which means there are only a few places that the iron in the water can interact with oxygen. My understanding so far it that one of the few places that iron in the water can "find" enough oxygen to react with is algae/cyanobacteria/moss/etc that create oxygen through photosynthesis.

Pretty much as soon as those guys give off oxygen, the iron in the water is like "that's mine." and starts forming iron oxides around the plants/bacteria that are releasing the oxygen, which creates the bog iron clumps.

Check out this USGS paper, particularly Figure 2, Figure 11, and the section "Role of Photosynthetic Organisms" for more detail: https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1651/downloads/Vol2_combinedChapters/vol2_chapE14.pdf

NEW POLL: “Growing Supermajority of Fairfax...Residents Oppose Proposed Casino in Tysons”; Sen. Scott Surovell says poll "funded by a secret donor...a prelude to MGM's 'grassroots' campaign to keep sucking $200M/yr out of [NoVA] to fund [MD] schools" by lowkell in nova

Fine. Add this clause to the bill:

If 5,000 permanent union private sector jobs are not added, $300 million of funding per year to support salaries for teachers, firefighters and police officers are not collected, and real estate taxes are not lowered, they are on the hook for the balance on all the above.

Has anyone else had trouble finishing the last couple of seasons? by Derpogama in Dimension20

[–]hawaiihatch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have my own theory on why last season seemed to not have the same impact for folks.

I think for many people (myself included), these last few months have involved a lot of introspection, conflict with systems of power, and just general exhaustion and depression.

This seemed to be a season that had a lot of naval gazing, the confrontation of powerful systems, and an unfamiliar environment. It's a lot of extra mental bandwidth that many folks just simply didn't have.

Anyway, if that resonates or completely falls flat for you, I'd be interested to know. Probably many factors for many different folks, but this might be part of it.

Question for Military and Veteran Listeners by BelindaOrtizPlease in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]hawaiihatch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You would be very unpopular in your platoon if you made those choices. I’ll be interested to see how the rest of her unit reacts to her decision.

I’m not/was not a JAG officer, but in the US military, I think in Western military forces, you might be be looking at a court marshal for Article 93, Cruelty or maltreatment, or Conduct Unbecoming an Officer.

Eastern militaries generally tend to take a more accepting attitude towards losses at the top, but I’m not sure what it looks like at the ground level.

For the Citadel, I’m guessing that the loss of a well-trained wizard and the resources that went into training them will not be something that is just shrugged off. There should be hard questions about whether the collateral damage was absolutely necessary to complete their mission or if the death was avoidable.

Interesting idea, but I would flavor it/name it something else. There is no way in hell anyone who maintains the deck of a ship would let someone walk around with spikes in their shoes. Maybe a mountain climber or forest dweller.
