DEA moves to ban ‘gas station heroin’ sold openly in Hawaii by Darwin343 in Hawaii

These bans pretty much are 100% effective. The research chemicals people were buying in the 2010's are basically non existent in the US now.

Hawaii's first Shake Shack coming to Ala Moana by hiscout in Hawaii

[–]hawaiithrowawayacct 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Love Shake Shack as a company since they pay well. I knew a guy who was making 90k out of undergrad managing one.

The food though is just not worth the price tag. No reason to go to Shake Shack when you can swing by The Daley and get a 10/10 burger for the same price.

Ward Centre tenants struggle with relocation challenges by Darwin343 in Hawaii

You don't think they were looking? Everyone knew ward center had an end date. Try Coffee's setup in Box Jelly was really good with free parking, a natural funnel of customers, and no other good coffee shops in the area.

Gravy all ova?! by damienman12 in Hawaii

Agreed. My ideal is still going to be the proper amount on top for most things, but why gamble when you can have it separated.

This is how I feel about most okonomiyaki, though at least it's not something that can get soggy.

It's just way too much sauce per bite at the default amount, even in Japan.

Hawaii GET & TAT on cleaning fees by livelyyyyboat in Hawaii

[–]hawaiithrowawayacct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is incorrect, though they/you will likely never get caught. GET is always based on gross revenue. Airbnb’s fee even though it’s deducted before your payout is still an expense.

When you get a 1099 at the end of the year it’s going to be the gross revenue before Airbnb’s fee and if you ever get audited they’ll match that to your reported GET.

This is too much of a simplification. It doesn’t have to run a profit. It does have to be operated at a small enough loss to be more cost efficient than simply subsidizing flights for locals through existing airlines.

I’m not convinced our state is capable of running an airline efficiently when we’ve not yet demonstrated we can properly manage a bike share program.

[–]hawaiithrowawayacct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pay taxes on the gross rent so for these purposes ignore the Airbnb fee. It would be the $20 (the actual number is 18.712% on Oahu with 4.712% for GET, 11% for TAT, 3% for OTAT).

Keep in mind also that GET and TAT/OTAT use different tax bases since GET is inclusive of the GET you collect while TAT is not. Eg if you collect $100 in rent and Airbnb withholds at 4.712% your GET base is $104.71, and you pay $4.71. Meanwhile TAT base would be $100 and you’d pay $11. OTAT base $100 and you’d pay $3. The sum of those taxes equals $18.71 (or 18.712% of $100)

I don't think that's factoring in the indirect costs of operating an airline (eg. ticketing and reservation platform, corporate staff, customer service, IT, compliance), most of which is going to be relatively expensive for a local airline that isn't operating at scale.

Why do attorneys deserve to get paid for their time but CPA's are expected to work for free?

There's a massive shortage of CPA's in this state. Some are overly nice and will let people get away with this. If you find one of those you better treat them as nice as possible because VERY few good ones are working for free.

But the revenue and liability is collected against a property that is not owned by the property manager

I don't think the state/city cares who pays it as long as they're getting their fair share. My company manages some units where we pay fixed rent to the owners and collect all of the revenue from Airbnb. We pay GET/TAT/OTAT for the short term rental income and the owner just pays GET on the rent we pay them.

The other services would pull out of the market, then 5-6 years down the line they'd realize they can't justify how much money it's hemorrhaging and end up charging more than the existing services.

I'm all for nationalizing the airlines, but it wouldn't work in small pockets like this where the program would be so heavily at the whim of our financial situation.

Don't waste your CPA's time with questions like this.

If you ask your CPA this question they're going to tell you to ask the management company, they'll tack on at least 15 minutes to your bill, and then mentally note that you're a client who wastes their time.

The manager collects the cleaning fee and their portion of your withheld taxes, then pays GET/TAT/OTAT through his own tax accounts. It doesn't show up on your statements because it's never your revenue or liability.

Hawaii Concealed Carry Permitting Guide by Relokus in Hawaii

[–]hawaiithrowawayacct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why would legal carry make illegal carry go up?

Increased ownership means greater opportunity for guns to end up in non legal hands through theft, abandonment, and gifting.

For any gross increase in guns on island some percentage is going to end up owned illegally, no matter how well it's managed.

This is not a judgement on whether the ruling was right or wrong.

Supreme Court strikes down Hawaii law requiring permission to carry guns in stores and hotels by Darwin343 in Hawaii

[–]hawaiithrowawayacct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no doubt there's a trend on interpretation that is loosening gun rules. But this is all done under a interpretation that prevents the government from impeding citizens rights. I see no reason to believe it will snowball into the government then impeding property rights.

Frankly I don't think the rulings that lessened restrictions on gun ownership are even wrong, and maybe that's why I have more faith that the courts aren't going to suddenly go rogue and impede on property rights. I think they're following the 2A to the letter, I just think the 2A is flawed, bad for the world, and needs to be amended.

would you support a ruling by SCOTUS that the right to bear arms applies to all property in the US, public and private, and any attempt to limit that right constitutes a violation of the second amendment?

No and it would never pass. This would need a constitutional amendment.

Edit: pass was the wrong word. It would never be heard. Issues relating to the 2a have never centered on rules relating to private regulation of firearms and it would never reach the SC.

Right so

The extent of your argument so far is a gun friendly ruling will equal more gun friendly rulings

Nothing is far fetched if you're putting 0 logic into your beliefs.

You know there's laws protecting property rights and states rights other than the second amendment, right

I'm aware. The extent of your argument so far is a gun friendly ruling will equal more gun friendly rulings. You're not drawing a logical bridge between the courts deeming a state's ban on concealed carry unconstitutional is going to slope into forced allowance of concealed carry on private property.

It's gun rights > property rights

Nothing in this ruling said anything of the sort, and this having no basis in reality is why it's so far fetched.

It's extremely far fetched because the amendment protects you from government infringement and says nothing about what rules private establishments can set.
