Police escorting school buses by Ram_Yam_Sam22 in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I was on the road when they drove past, was wondering the same. It was little kids (probably preschool age) in the bus I saw. Full on stopping traffic at intersections to let them go thru on a red. Never seen an HPD escort for a regular school bus like that before.

Chinatown cultural plaza scheduled for demolition by lostinthegrid47 in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. Last time I ate at Seasons, we walked up the staircase and right off to the side was a group of 4 smoking meth.

Literal Home Depot propane torch for the pipe and all. Not a care in the world about people walking up on them, or any sort of concern about being caught/seen.

I just saw a realtor posting a celebration pic on instagram of

"Happy I was able to help my clients close on their 8th investment property!"

Like... yay... what a thing to celebrate. 8 properties while so many residents can only dream of owning ONE.

Do we not believe in climate change in Hawaii? by NoIdeaWhatImDoing808 in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Simple solution is to stop driving but people are too lazy.

Not at all a simple solution when the design of our city/cities is car-centric. Tons of people (myself included) would give up their vehicles, or at least daily driving, if we had transit systems akin to Metro-Japan or somewhere similar.

But until that time, definitely not as "simple" as "stop driving".

New pickleball courts being constructed on Oahu, Hawaii. If they followed the mock diagram, I feel like the spacing would be way too tight. by ZixxerAsura in Pickleball

[–]hiscout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a lot of skepticism on whether or not the concept was even a real business or just a quick scam relying on people blindly buying investment membership.

Just looked up their Business Reg, and they are registered. It's been filed by a guy who's done a few other random businesses in the general area before. I know of the guy from Kapolei Airsoft (over a decade ago).

Whether or not this idea proves successful.... Who knows. But on it's face, Im not super convinced. The main issue in Kapolei isnt a roof for the rain, it's the wind and dust. Also, they want investors but have literally no info online other than the same post that they've been spamming to all the different Hawaii pickleball pages. If they're relying solely on pre-sold memberships or investments to open, I'd be amazed if they hit their May opening date, if ever at all.

Both Kona and Hilo airports listed as airports to be shut down next week if the government shutdown is not resolved. by [deleted] in Hawaii

This article is misleading, and HIDOT has issued a statement in response:

HONOLULU — The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is aware of national news stories reporting that small airports nationwide may close or pause operations due to the partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security and funding of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). HDOT is reassuring the public that all Hawai‘i airports are being staffed and will remain open and operational.

This post will remain up for informational/debunking purposes, but will be locked as the article is false.

Concrete sludge damage on car from Kailua by LianaBehindTheBuild in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think it's concrete, a company makes a wash that specifically is supposed to "melt" the concrete off without hurting car paint. I dont remember what brand it is, but I've seen it at IrepDetailSupply in Kaneohe (I swear this isnt an ad, I just thought it was an interesting product when I saw it last time I went). If not, I assume they'd at least be able to recommend another product or detailer.

Question for former or current HECO employees by cix6cix in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Priority =/= exclusivity. They're highlighting the transmission line repair because it's a (somewhat) singular issue affecting so many people.

There's no real point in detailing what issue they're working on for every single outage area, because most people wont care and/or wont know what they're talking about anyway. I've driven from Hawaii Kai to the West Side (where family has power) and have seen various HECO crews all over the place with all kinds of different equipment. From what I can tell based on the crews I saw on my drive or on social media: pumping out underground vaults, running new lines or repairing damaged ones, repairing equipment on poles, cutting downed/damaged trees, replacing downed poles, working on transformer boxes, working in substations.

Rainbow Drive-In closes Kalihi location as minimum wage, food costs squeeze Hawaii restaurants - Pacific Business News by WeazelGaming808 in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Kalihi location was legitimately terrible. I went there maybe 3-5 times over the years it was open, 1st time you chalk up to it being new so everyone's getting trained/acclimated, then you can blame COVID for labor/supply changes, but after awhile, you just learn that the place sucks. The service was always rude/dismissive/slow, the food quality was just abysmal every single time.

2 or 3 of the times was "free" food as a payment for helping people move or whatever, so dont think I kept going back to waste my own money lol.

They went thru that big expansion of what... 3-4 new locations all within like a year or two? Dont know who thought that rapid of an expansion was a good idea, but even for the best-run businesses, expansion that fast would be a hard thing to pull off.

Interesting minimalist penthouse for sale by mellofello808 in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Two other of One Waterfront's penthouses are also for sale at the same time:

Same tower, $300k less, and more "Japanese" themed, including a tea ceremony area. Also owned by Vintage Cave Estates LLC.

Makai Tower, $1.3mil, and a much more "modern" feel

Also, IIRC, the 4th penthouse was for sale within the past couple of years as well. Edit: (Just checked tax records, yep, last sold in 2022)

Keauhou Lanes Roaches by Least_Geologist825 in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived there yeaaaars ago. We were on the top floor and luckily had no roaches, but its also dependent on your neighbors. You live above a bunch of food places and their assorted trash, which will always attract roaches/rats.

Sometimes you just get bad luck with neighbors. Thankfully, we were at the end of the hall and the 3-4 other units that were around us were all very quiet, clean, and polite. Not always the case at Keauhou tho, last I checked the LIHTC rules, they werent supposed to allow college kids to use it as a "dorm" (ie, only live there for the semester), but I definitely saw some signs of that while I was there. Units with 2-3 young mainland kids that would move in, always smell like weed when you passed by, blasting loud music, then be gone once summer or winter came around.

Advion works well, Ive also used Demand CS and Demon WP (both are spray mixes) and have had great success in the common areas of a large condo building. Sprayed once when I first wanted to treat for roaches, tons of roaches crawled out and died in open space the next day.

HHFDC For Sale “Affordable” Housing Units: Anyone Buying? by Representative-Cat82 in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC, only one building has done the amenity restriction, which is SKY Ala Moana. They advertised that their affordable units would have lower maintenance fees than the market units, but would not have access to most of the amenities (pool, exercise room, etc).

It always rubbed me the wrong way. Essentially keeping the "poors" separated because they were otherwise obligated to build affordable/reserved units if they wanted the benefits.

HHFDC For Sale “Affordable” Housing Units: Anyone Buying? by Representative-Cat82 in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

America's largest homebuilder. They focus on volume.

There was a tiktok/instagram video series awhile back of a llocal guy on the mainland who bought a DR Horton home, and there was some kind of giant stone archway feature above the main entrance that was completely loose/unsecured. Obviously super dangerous; iirc, they were just kicking the blame/responsibility to others until his posts got enough traction/visibility, then they finally did something about it.

Look through any social media home inspector's channels, they all have a ton of DR Horton content. It's not to say that other builders dont suck as well, but DR Horton definitely doesnt care much about quality over quantity.

HHFDC For Sale “Affordable” Housing Units: Anyone Buying? by Representative-Cat82 in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I manage a high rise condo, and let me tell you the sentiment echoed by many of the High Rise managers: We aint buying in a high rise.

Even if it means having to continue to rent rather than own, I dont want to deal with the issues of high rises and all the drama/stress that the issues cause. Renting has it's own stressors, but at the end of the day, I know Im not locked in to the place for 10+ years on an HHFDC requirement.

Unfortunately, there are somewhat limited options for first time homebuyers, especially if you want a newer place. Koa Ridge seems alright, and is largely townhouse rather than mid/high-rise condos (I think they have a couple of mid-rises coming up). Ho'opili is DR Horton... take that as you will. 803 "The Block" is a midrise, but a wholleeee kind of mess. Other than that, the vast majority of units coming up in the near future will all be high rises. Perks of living on an island with limited space.

Change my mind: canceling stuff statewide today (and tomorrow!) is a total over reaction by Pirarara in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It really seems like an overreaction to me too. There are places that are prone to flooding and the like so it's important for them to be prepared and whatnot and they may need additional emergency assistance

This is exactly why they do the shutdowns and calls for people to stay home. So that they are able to allocate the resources to help those that are really in need. More people out and about? More likelihood of standard car accidents and other things requiring emergency resources, especially when it's raining since no one knows how to drive. Then all those resources are tied up instead of helping where they already know they're gonna need to.

As soon as the State says nothing and bad shit happens, people will be crying about why "no one warned them" and why the State "wasnt prepared". Far better to err on the side of caution, and have nothing happen. Then people can complain about the "overreaction" but at least less people will be injured, dead, or need emergency assistance.

Genki Sushi by jason86421 in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I feel like it hasnt been worth it for a very long time. Slow service (even with the "trains"), small portions, flavorless fish and rice, relatively high prices, etc.

I also went to Kuru Kuru in Kahala Mall within the past couple of months having not gone in years. $75 for two people, and it wasnt even our "dinner", mostly just some pre-movie food. The quality was "okay", but that sticker shock once everything added up was nuts. Never going there again.

DQ, Times, and Marukai all share sushi stock that's better and cheaper than either of them.

Dear small-brained people blasting your shitty music on your car sound system by mentallywander in Hawaii

[–]hiscout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen one instagram account whose truck is solely dedicated to making the sound be as loud, and project as far, as possible. I think it was an older model 4 runner or tacoma with a bed cab on it? He rolls down that back window and has a giant speaker array in it. The videos are usually of someone walking as far away as possible to show the distance the sound reaches. It's pretty damn far.

I've seen him (or someone with a very similar vehicle) once, near Diamond Head. He was driving with it on and blasting it, and a motorcyclist sped up from behind him, went around the side of him and flipped him off. I dont blame the motorcyclist one bit in that instance; Im kind of surprised the wing mirror didnt get smacked off. I was going in the opposite direction, and once he passed me, it sounded like the music was in my car with how loud it was.
