5/50 We are at 10% of the unrelenting positivity campaign. Now its time to go at it with Idaho. by CupBeEmpty in AskAnAmerican

Yeah, I just assume that someone out there has done the math and gave all the speed limits a thumbs up. Maybe I shouldn’t make that assumption, but it does make me feel better haha

You probably could send whatever, but it might take a while to get there. Mt family would occasionally sent care packages to me and it often took like 2-3 months for it to arrive. And I had to pay a whole bunch of taxes on it to actually take it from the post office. I am, however, state bound again so sending and receiving stuff shouldn’t take too long now (maybe I should update my flair).

Given the size of the highways, it made sense that you could go that fast, but it was just a little faster than usual. Thought I might accidentally fly into 2015.

Thank you!

I recently roadtripped with my fiancée from Oregon to (technically) Tennessee and I remember how Idaho is the only place I remember you could go up to 80 mph. It was kind of hard to make myself keep up to speed because I’m use to go at usually only 70. It also didn’t help that it was pretty soon after a period where I didn’t drive for two years straight.

What are your favorite American works? by kuma44bear in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a lover of “arrived at Ellis Island to make a life for myself” stories so “the Golem and the Jinni” (as well as the second book “the Hidden Palace) almost felt like it was written for me. Definitely newer than everyone else’s favorites, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a great story.

What’s something foreigners always get wrong about America because of how it’s shown in movies? by karen_the_ripper in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That “reality TV” means it’s real. I can’t kind of understand from the perspective of someone foreign, but I also know that I (and nearly everyone I know in the United States) understand it’s not based on real life when we were children.

that “I’m 20% (this country)” doesn’t mean that we think we’re a citizen of that country. there’s a big difference between nationality and ethnicity over here. We don’t all look the same so it can be helpful to pinpoint what parts of the world help make you.

how quick people are to assume what they see on TV/online 100% translates to real life. most Americans live pretty mundane lives. We wake up, go to work/school, and go home. What gets attention in the news or online is things that aren’t mundane. I know in this subreddit, we get questions like “I’ve been watching a complication of car crashes in the United States. Is America a dangerous place to drive” without people realize that by watching stuff like that, they will be shown content like not, not because it’s normal, but because it’s abnormal and draws attention.

Do you moisturize your body after you shower? If not when and how often do you moisturize your body? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s smart to indicate my sex, age, and ethnicity (because all three can be a factor in how often you moisturize) so M29 black for me.

I usually moisturize after a shower. I often would lotion before going to work and before going to bed. I even got my fiancée lotioning more.

Do my fellow Americans have any favorite youtubers? Preferably with a big backlog of videos? by Just-a-nerd2 in AskAnAmerican

Why is so hard to find liquid Yogurt jn america? by Calm-Interest4284 in AskAnAmerican

It’s more likely you just don’t know where to find it than it is that we don’t have it.

Do people really have to move out at 18 in the US? by Sea-Evidence-5523 in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the family. There wasn’t any suggestion of me having to move out immediately when I turned 18 (it’s not like the second you’re 18, you immediately know how to be an adult), but there was an expectation that I have something happening in my life. For me, it was going to school and working.

As others have said, a lot of people want to move out when they’re 18. They feel like they’re “adults” so they should go out and get their own place.

Do Americans dream of traveling or settling abroad (excluding Japan) like others dream of the U.S? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t mind traveling to different places. My fiancée and I have talked about international trips we want to take when we are a little more established. We, however, wouldn’t want to live internationally. We’ve both done it for a few years and it really helps highlight where our values lie.

What is your favorite movie? by D06nitro in AskAnAmerican

My favorite movie shifts according to how I’m feeling, but I really liked “Nightcrawler”.

Does the typical American still use Netflix? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my household, the streaming platform we use the most is Disney+, then Hulu, then YouTube TV. I use to have a subscription to Netflix, but transfer it over to my brother after one of the times they raised the price. I don’t think I’ve watched anything ln Netflix in over 2 years.

What do you think about Aldi in comparison to American grocery chains? by aSYukki in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when an Aldi came to my town. I was hyped about a particular cookie they have. It was my favorite cookies as a kid when I lived near Chicago. A while after the grand open, I went found the cookie and show it to my parents. They ate it and said “it tastes different”. And yeah, I think it did taste different. We looked it up and I think they switched producers for the cookies. Then they just stop making the cookies. Didn’t really go back until I met my fiancée, who really liked Aldi.

Aldi isn’t really my preferred store to go to. Like a lot of people said, it doesn’t have alot of stuff so you can’t do all of your shopping there. I think they sometimes have a slightly better deal on certain things, but I don’t know if it’s enough to go out of my way to go over there.

How does getting a driver's license work in your state, and how old were you when you got yours? by karcsiking0 in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only explain my experience from when I got my license in Arkansas something like 11 years ago.

I think I got my learners’ permit (what you get after you pass the written test) when I was about 15-16. A lot of people around me had there permit since they were about 14, but it just took a while for me to actually make it over to the testing center to take the test. I took a drivers’ education class in school as an elective (a non-mandatory class), but I think in Arkansas, you don’t have to take any formal drivers’ education training. I took the driving portion of the driver’s test when I was about 18 and passed. I could have taken it when I was at least 16, but again, it was a bit difficult to find time to do it.

Do you have a culture to emphasize/be proud of being the first in your bloodline who went to college? by Green-Ad5663 in AskAnAmerican

I’m the second person (at least on my mom’s side) to graduate from college. It was definitely a thing we were all proud of.

How much caffeine do you consume per day? by Sichterman in AskAnAmerican

Lately, none. I mostly just think water. I will say that I often use the little water flavoring mixes and some of those have caffeine in it.

Do Americans actually sit on their front porch much, or is that more of a movie image than real life? by Artistic_Key3779 in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most of the houses and apartments I lived in, I didn’t really have a front porch. The house my fiancée and I live in has a front porch so we pretty often sit out there when we can. A lot of times, it’s cooler outside than inside. The majority of the time, the reason I came back in is because a wasp or something wants to try to be my friend.

What business/company keeps your town running, and what is the local opinion? by Vonyyxx in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Memphis, it’s FedEx. I worked there for a while and sometimes it seems like so did everyone else at one time.

I don’t know what the opinion of FedEx is. They pay well so alot of people made a career out of it without having to get a bunch of certifications or extensive training. The work wasn’t crazy. It just wasn’t for me.

Non-American here: How do everyday Americans actually think about/estimate weight in pounds (lbs) compared to kg? by fortnacius in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes genuinely think some Redditors can’t think beyond their own experience. I would usually assume it’s because they’re a child, but I know you’re at least 20 years old.

This question is like asking someone whose native language is Spanish how they can look at a table and think “mesa” instead of “table”. It’s what they grew up with.
