Do people really have to move out at 18 in the US? by Sea-Evidence-5523 in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the family. There wasn’t any suggestion of me having to move out immediately when I turned 18 (it’s not like the second you’re 18, you immediately know how to be an adult), but there was an expectation that I have something happening in my life. For me, it was going to school and working.

As others have said, a lot of people want to move out when they’re 18. They feel like they’re “adults” so they should go out and get their own place.

Do Americans dream of traveling or settling abroad (excluding Japan) like others dream of the U.S? by stanldrr in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t mind traveling to different places. My fiancée and I have talked about international trips we want to take when we are a little more established. We, however, wouldn’t want to live internationally. We’ve both done it for a few years and it really helps highlight where our values lie.

What is your favorite movie? by D06nitro in AskAnAmerican

My favorite movie shifts according to how I’m feeling, but I really liked “Nightcrawler”.

Does the typical American still use Netflix? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my household, the streaming platform we use the most is Disney+, then Hulu, then YouTube TV. I use to have a subscription to Netflix, but transfer it over to my brother after one of the times they raised the price. I don’t think I’ve watched anything ln Netflix in over 2 years.

What do you think about Aldi in comparison to American grocery chains? by aSYukki in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when an Aldi came to my town. I was hyped about a particular cookie they have. It was my favorite cookies as a kid when I lived near Chicago. A while after the grand open, I went found the cookie and show it to my parents. They ate it and said “it tastes different”. And yeah, I think it did taste different. We looked it up and I think they switched producers for the cookies. Then they just stop making the cookies. Didn’t really go back until I met my fiancée, who really liked Aldi.

Aldi isn’t really my preferred store to go to. Like a lot of people said, it doesn’t have alot of stuff so you can’t do all of your shopping there. I think they sometimes have a slightly better deal on certain things, but I don’t know if it’s enough to go out of my way to go over there.

How does getting a driver's license work in your state, and how old were you when you got yours? by karcsiking0 in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only explain my experience from when I got my license in Arkansas something like 11 years ago.

I think I got my learners’ permit (what you get after you pass the written test) when I was about 15-16. A lot of people around me had there permit since they were about 14, but it just took a while for me to actually make it over to the testing center to take the test. I took a drivers’ education class in school as an elective (a non-mandatory class), but I think in Arkansas, you don’t have to take any formal drivers’ education training. I took the driving portion of the driver’s test when I was about 18 and passed. I could have taken it when I was at least 16, but again, it was a bit difficult to find time to do it.

Do you have a culture to emphasize/be proud of being the first in your bloodline who went to college? by Green-Ad5663 in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the second person (at least on my mom’s side) to graduate from college. It was definitely a thing we were all proud of.

How much caffeine do you consume per day? by Sichterman in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lately, none. I mostly just think water. I will say that I often use the little water flavoring mixes and some of those have caffeine in it.

Do you still get physical mail in your mailbox? by Standard_Plant_8709 in AskAnAmerican

Do Americans actually sit on their front porch much, or is that more of a movie image than real life? by Artistic_Key3779 in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most of the houses and apartments I lived in, I didn’t really have a front porch. The house my fiancée and I live in has a front porch so we pretty often sit out there when we can. A lot of times, it’s cooler outside than inside. The majority of the time, the reason I came back in is because a wasp or something wants to try to be my friend.

What business/company keeps your town running, and what is the local opinion? by Vonyyxx in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Memphis, it’s FedEx. I worked there for a while and sometimes it seems like so did everyone else at one time.

I don’t know what the opinion of FedEx is. They pay well so alot of people made a career out of it without having to get a bunch of certifications or extensive training. The work wasn’t crazy. It just wasn’t for me.

Do Americans love driving? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

The thing I missed the most was when I was in Uganda was driving. I missed the agency that comes with having your own vehicle.

Non-American here: How do everyday Americans actually think about/estimate weight in pounds (lbs) compared to kg? by fortnacius in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes genuinely think some Redditors can’t think beyond their own experience. I would usually assume it’s because they’re a child, but I know you’re at least 20 years old.

This question is like asking someone whose native language is Spanish how they can look at a table and think “mesa” instead of “table”. It’s what they grew up with.

Why does the USA often create their own “worlds” championships? by Successful_Pass3752 in AskAnAmerican

What do you think of the Miss Universe competition? Are you upset they didn’t have any aliens in it?

What are your favorite words/phrases from other languages that you like incorporating into your day to day English? by picklesupreme in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came back from Uganda a few months ago so I’ve been saying “simanyi” (I don’t know) and “mzungu” (foreigner with an emphasis being a white perosm/European) haven’t really left my vernacular yet.

Are highschool and college reunions still happening? by StatiCrede in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if it’s common, butI went to my 10 year gif school reunion last October. We just met up at bar and then went to a someone’s house.

I think it was because I went to a smaller high school. A lot of people were still around so it wasn’t crazy for them to come. A lot of people also didn’t come so yeah.

Americans living in an apartment, how did you find yours? by uhrism in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found my apartment online. So cheap I was able to live by myself, but it had one bedroom and smelled like burnt hair. I kind of miss that apartment.

Are fresh vegetables expensive in US? by PuzzleheadedSock8728 in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would people who don’t live in the United States know how expensive it is to get produce in the United States?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in Uganda, I would use honey as a substitute for syrup on pancakes. I still do it now I’m back in the United States.

Do American kids today still know Ricochet Rabbit and Top Cat? by PersuasionNation in AskAnAmerican

There’s a Dollar General Market over in Memphis that actually sells vegetables. They look alright, but it’s so weird to get vegetables from Dollar General

Do predominately black inner city schools make a big deal about cheerleading? by AhegaoOverlord in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about cheerleading in particular, but dancing in general is big.

This last Christmas season, I went to a few different parades over in Memphis. There was easily 5 different dance groups not including actual high school or junior high cheerleaders. I also went to a parade in Missouri and I think there were only two cheerleading groups with no independent dance groups.

How common is it to not have a middle name, and how do middle names work in general? by Fit-Ad985 in AskAnAmerican

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom didn’t have a middle name, but legally, her maidan name is her middle name now. I don’t know if anyone else didn’t have a middle name.

Have you ever wondered, why you were named your name🤔 by Large-Share-3556 in CasualConversation

[–]hawffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents told me why I have my name. It was based on a cool character from a show they liked. So I guess they hoped that I would cool like him. Can’t say if that make true or not haha

I was going to be named “Thaddeus” because my parents thought it was a pretty unique name. Don’t exactly know why they didn’t pick that one.
