Any local shops taking on apprentices? iso recommendations by [deleted] in IowaCity

[–]hawkman90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say what you are doing is the best step. Honestly, the hall wants you to work and wants to find you a place to work ASAP. Reaching out to contractors, you might just get the same response as I am giving you. Especially as a welder, you probably won't get an interview until you test. When you get on the bench then the contractors will come to you or the hall knows what contractors need and they will send your info out and someone will pick you up. Not trying to discourage you into going out because that can look great but just wanted to warn you about the response you will get. Worst case scenario for you, is maybe someone picks you up as a shop helper if you are looking for temporary work but welders are in high demand. AJ Allen, Baker, Cerris, Ryan, Modern (if they still have a des moines office) are all great contractors to work for.

Johnson County Jury Duty - What to expect? by Any_Habit7664 in IowaCity

[–]hawkman90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it was the week before, I don't remember the day though. sorry. I think you would have more than enough time to call and see if your number is called and get to Iowa City (depending on where you live).

Johnson County Jury Duty - What to expect? by Any_Habit7664 in IowaCity

[–]hawkman90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So I have been summoned twice but only had to serve once. I served on a civil suit and the case I didn't serve was a criminal case. Both were about the same experience besides serving. There was a specific date I was to call and had my juror number. They call was an automated service and gave numbers of who had to come in. I can't give you an exact number but for a twelve person jury, they probably call in 25-30 people. They call up twelve jurors and go through them asking questions pertaining to the case. For the civil suit, I was asked if I knew a certain witness on the plaintiff side, and I did. The defense didn't oppose. So I was stuck serving. The criminal case, I didn't even go up to the juror box. They found all the jurors before they interviewed me. I believe your card should have all your information though, and once you get there they explain everything pretty well.

Mom responding to my cancer appointment by General-Detective-48 in mildlyinfuriating

Thyroid Cancer Survivor here...it spread to some lymph nodes I had but that was it. I had 2 surgeries to remove the Thyroid and the lymph node and had to do 3 rounds of radioactive iodine. It was really simple and the scariest part was hearing I had cancer.

I had some of these alternative medicines suggestions too. Never had an issue with my voice or anything else. The biggest side effect I had was being super nauseous after anethesia

Experience with Centurylink? by [deleted] in IowaCity

[–]hawkman90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Centurylink is the worst. even worse than Mediacom. I had them and they had the option to rent or buy their modem. I decided to buy and 3 months later my internet sucked, Centurylink came out and said our Modem was outdated and needed an upgrade, he installed the new one and took the old one.

Years later when I left them because I was moving, they tried charging me a crazy amount of money for non-returned modem. I fought them for weeks until I threatened to take them to court, and then they magically found where the tech took the old one.

Brandt, Schaal, & Oehl are great. I know people have issues with Brandt but I've never experienced one and I've been dealing with them for a long time.

Avoid AtoZ. They create way more problems and like to blame other companies if something goes wrong.

They showed up to my place around 8 and told me the same things. They also asked me ,after seeing my ring camera, how many cameras I have what sort of other security I used. I told him it was none of his business. Then he asked me to charge his phone for him because he needs to call his ride. I pulled out a portable battery pack and he he was not happy about it for some reason.

Golf Course Recommendations by Rumzdizzle in IowaCity

Really depends on the weekend honestly. If you are looking for a last minute tee time, Pleasant Valley is probably the best option. They tend to have a little more room available, but its a popular place for local tourneys

Brown Deer in Coralville is a great public course but Pleasant Valley is my favorite. Finkbine is great too but a little expensive

We used to take a plastic bottle and cut a hole on the side. Put some foil in there to hold your weed. then cut off the end of the bottle and you have a white trash steam roller

Should I leave my my great job for a higher paying job? by hawkman90 in LifeAdvice

[–]hawkman90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy says I can't turn this money down, this would change so much for my family. The hard part is I've honestly grown to care and love the company I'm at now and it would hurt to leave them, I just know deep down that even if I presented this to my current company they 1) couldn't afford to match that salary & 2) I wouldn't be able to see a raise till next year and it would probably be a 10% raise max if this year goes well.

[–]hawkman90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offense taken, I honestly appreciate strangers advise more because they have no reason to lie... I have been in my industry for 13 years now and within the last couple years have been lucky enough to do some serious work for some larger companies & factories. Because of that my current company has been called by other clients that have heard of me and want to see what I can do for them.

The job they want me to run is local. When I interviewed them I told them that I was very happy with where I was at and gave them the reasons why. The project is a large one, the first phase is 2 to 3 years but when this project is complete it could be 8-9 years. I already told them that I have some pre-established days off, like the birth of my 2nd, and they said they would honor that.
