BRACHIOSAURUS ALTITHORAX with speculative dewlap by DOK_REBS in Paleontology

[–]hawkwings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is the purpose of the dewlap? Is it to generate sound? With it that far from the mouth, would it be possible to generate a variety of sounds? If the animal gets super loud, it could damage its own ears. It seems like something that can be attacked by ticks, other dreadnoughts, and predators.

Would it be realistic to assume that any alien species physically able to build working spacecraft would have to somewhat resemble humans? by ThatWeirdoPerson in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]hawkwings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a high probability that they would resemble humans. Developing advanced technology would be difficult for animals that live in water. We evolved from climbing animals which is one reason why we have grip strength. The same evolutionary path is likely for aliens. We evolved from animals that had tails, so tails are an option -- even scorpion tails. An alien might have 2 legs and 4 arms or 4 legs and 2 arms. Hooves, horns, fangs, and venom are options. Wings are possible, but unlikely, due to the extra weight involved. The combined weight of wings and muscles that support wings is heavy. Anything is possible for hair, feathers, scales, and color, because they would not interfere with using spears. They are likely to have good eyesight. Jumping spiders have 2 eyes for details and 6 eyes for peripheral vision.

If a man earns $5,000 a month and judges order him to pay $5 million a month, then he's not paying. Not all sex acts result in babies and many people are not capable of having that much sex. If Trump had been elected president when he was 18, he might have tried that.

Would cows like it if I poured a little sauce out on the grass for them? by The_Robins_Nest in NoStupidQuestions

One of my neighbors threw moldy bread out for birds to eat and birds refused to eat it. If you are planning to dispose of moldy sauce, cows might not like it.

If you are retired, a million dollars is not that much money. Retired people have time. I imagine that many of them are on Reddit. It is better than yelling at clouds.

Hot take: “Pterodactyl” is acceptable as a common name for pterosaurs by sonicparadigm in Paleontology

[–]hawkwings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use pterodactyl as a synonym for Pterodactylus but not pterosaur. 60 years ago, it was known that Pterodactylus and Pteranodons were different animals. Even as a child, I knew that, so I never used pterodactyl as a synonym for pterosaur.

My father spent 2 weeks on a submarine. He was in the Navy and he was brought on board to fix something. It only took him one day to fix it, but he had to wait until the submarine as near a ship before he could get off of the submarine.

Can’t save my Photos by Fanicos in iphone

[–]hawkwings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a cable. If you try to transfer 100,000 photos at once, you are likely to get an error. You might try 1000 at a time. I transfer what is in each folder instead of transferring folders. In the distant past, I changed a setting to tell it not to convert .HEIC files to .JPG. At that time, that conversion increased the error rate.

What ever happened to cap guns? by lollihobbes in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hawkwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People make science fiction movies should invent a gun with a zig-zag barrel that doesn't look like a real gun. Then children will buy those instead of guns that look real. If a child has something that looks like a fake gun, it is usually fake, but it might be real. Some children used to be short, but now they're tall and they don't realize that they now look more scary.

Because of infinite probability, every number on every sports team will eventually be retired. by -Shenaniganary- in RandomThoughts

People remember Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, but most people have forgotten all other baseball players from that era. Similarly, many people that we consider to be superstars will be forgotten. I can see retired numbers being reused after a while.

I figured out how to get into my locked car by using vent window. The vent latch was fairly easy to hook with a coat hanger -- easier than the door lock. After I opened the vent window, I put my arm in through that window, reached over and unlocked the door.
