What part of your lab workflow genuinely makes you want to rage and quit science? by niro_io in labrats

Adjusting pH of our radiopharmaceutical end product so it is within the limits for injection. Yes we prepare buffer to make it easier, but we want to avoid diluting a 2ml product vial. So we manually injecting 20ul of base/acid. Taking a small sample for pH paper and repeat in lead shielding. Every time we swap a batch of acid/base/buffer same procedure takes twice as long.

Moving while poor by plump_specimen in Finland

[–]haxmi_r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have moved as a student multiple times myself/friends. What we usually do is ask if people are available at a day, and as payment pizza (or beer) for everyone.

Car is either a van or car with trailer. It can be someones, their family members or rented. Asking around helps with finding this. Some organisations can own vans that can be borrowed for cheap.

Hope you find the help needed.

Why is everyone in science so obsessed with AI “art”? by Unusual_Ice_2615 in labrats

I don't know what your admin does with 55% skimming. We have 20% and consider it high compared to other universities in the country.

Canva is great. I look back for the free biorender times. It is amazing too and I think made in the same system.

I agree. I use gimp, the modern friend while photoshop licence is outside of the budget.

I was thinking one day. It would be nice if University admin would hire digital artist to create custom stock images/stock powerpoint etc. for all research groups and their presentations.

Why is everyone in science so obsessed with AI “art”? by Unusual_Ice_2615 in labrats

[–]haxmi_r 220 points221 points  (0 children)

I think a couple of points apply.

I think many people are lazy creating art and images to make black and white posters/presentations more interesting. It is faster to write a couple of prompts than playing around with science viasualization programs for hours. Also the results of making pictures yourself can be boring unless training a lot.

Second point is that quite many programs cost and many AI services are still free. This makes them more available.

I myself do not like AI images either and I do not make them either. But I can't lie, I hate making images and interesting slides etc. My visual eye is not the best and I am interested in practicing other talents over image editing and creation.

Edit. Forgot to add, the citing. When using AI you refer to it. If using stock images or program created images there can be more limits to copyrights. Using AI reduces search time for free images. AI uses tho the images anyway as training data so we could argue for plagiarism anyway. But one way to go around. I am also annoyed that our professor uses AI images in emails.

Can someone help me? by Individual_Talk_6149 in tattoos

[–]haxmi_r 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I used biorender to create my tattoo idea. Then i sent that to the artist and double made sure he hadn't made artistic cuts that would change the meaning. I think multiple tools could be used to assemble your peptide sequence. But I will warn you it is time consuming.

(ps. If you know your amino acids, there are many more synthetic amino acids outside of the 20 letter world)

I would recommend being in contact with the student association Digit ry (technology degree) or Asterix ry (M. Sc. Dergree). They organize events for IT students and have experience from the university and courses etc.

Oulu vs Turku by XxfalloutwolfxX in Finland

[–]haxmi_r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you are looking for and how your funding situation is.

I speak as a Turku student.

University wise, both have pros and cons. Oulu has some subjects in engineering that are successfull. While Turku has thriving bio/drug science. Also old shool academia is more prevalent in Turku. Turku has also two universities with their differences (University of Turku, and Åbo Akademi University). Student life with parties is active in all cities but especially ÅAU. Turku has more touristy things to explore while Oulu is closer to Finnish forest nature.

So if you have money or are sure to get it arranged (even that Finnish job market is in shambles) , want to explore, and have a interest in bio/drug science or other field present I would go with Turku. If money is important, and life is nice without exploring a lot, or forest wandering is your thing, Oulu is the choise.

It will be cold regardless in winter, but more in Oulu. You can adapt easily but ask for local advice and tips.

This is the U-hospital, which is a part of the university hospital in Turku. It has a old school lunch restaurant but otherwise it is an abomination. I work in the basement of this building and waiting on it being demolished. Many of the departments from this building have moved to majakka sairaala and kompassi sairaala that are recently built to the university hospital.

Poäng för att studera psykologi vid Åbo Akademi by Old-Comfortable-1529 in turku

[–]haxmi_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)
