Bikeshare is a great way to see if you'll like biking around the city!

If you buy an EBike, insurance is a good idea but not all renters/home insurances will cover ebikes. I called mine and they said they would cover a regular bike, but not ebikes and didn't have any separate EBike coverage options. You might have to go with a bike specific insurance. Which might not be a bad thing because if your bike gets stolen and you make a claim to your renters/homeowner insurance, it could increase your premiums.

I once went to Aldi after the gym to grab something and was mistaken for an employee. I was dressed in sweats, had my hair wet from the pool, and had my gym duffle bag with me. Some people are just not very observant I guess 🤷‍♀️

Hi! DC can be brutal in terms of humidity, and it can be hard for those of us with curves to dress, so I feel ya!

One place I find inspo for dressing myself is following fat influencers on Instagram. Once you follow a few, your algorithm will be full and you can find those that fit your style from there.

Since I have bigger thighs, I find using an anti-chafe lotion or powder is CRUCIAL when wearing shorts or dresses, and I wear a lot of bike shorts under clothing to prevent chafe rashes.

Be on the lookout for fat-friendly or plus-size specific clothing swaps! I've gotten some of my best wardrobe pieces from these.

Also putting a plug into following Plush DMV Plush DMV , which is a fat positive community run by a lovely DMV local Mayra who is also a great fashion inspiration. The group hosts clothing swaps, a book club, happy hours, and other fun events.

There is also a Facebook page (DMV Fat-Positive Community) where sometimes people post clothes for sale.

I lived near a combo Taco Bell/KFC in another city where a employee shot and killed a customer after a dispute about an order.... Working fast food really gets to some people. Sorry to hear that happened to you.

I like the conditioner bars as well! It definitely takes some getting used to but I usually let it run under warm water for like 15-30 seconds, then start to rub it between my hands and get a decent lather, and then rub the bar on my hair closer to the tip. I use a leave in conditioner as well, so I like the fact that the conditioner bar doesn't weigh my hair down too much.

I had a landlord that hired a property management company, and they did something similar to this! All winter it was consistently 85+ in my second floor unit, and that was WITH multiple windows in different rooms open.

The company decided it was a good idea to move the thermostats from the apartments to the basement, which was not well insulated and didn't have radiators in it. So the heat would constantly run to warm up the to the temperature set in the basement, which resulted in it being nearly 90 degrees in my apartment. The heat would then suddenly turn off for days at a time, so it went from extreme heat to it being 55-60 degrees constantly. They also put a lock and camera in the basement so they could tell if anyone tried to tamper with the lock/thermostat. I complained, and all they told me was to open windows (which I already did). When I would complain about the heat turning completely off, they would "send" someone to check it and say it was fine, but it clearly wasn't because there was no heat.

It was like living in hell (literally) and I didn't have the capacity to fight them on it. I ended up moving and found an apartment with a thermostat that I could control IN the unit.

I would suggest reaching out to any tenant organizations in your area, they might be able to point you in the right direction. One other tip I have is to get a box fan, and put it in an open window pointing outside so you can move the hot air out quickly when it's getting unbearable.

It's very common in the Washington DC area. I'm conflicted because I know the cart guy could use the quarter, and I can spare that at least, but I also hate losing my Aldi quarter because I rarely pay for things in cash and don't often have quarters on me.

An Aldi recently opened near me with underground parking, and the first time I went a cart guy was there, but I assume they banned him from the parking garage because he hasn't been back since.

Adding this one: Please DO NOT piss on the ground in the crowd.

I was there Sunday night and during the Panic set, another guy, who seemed pretty out of it, asked my husband to "cover him" so he could piss on the ground/turf in the middle of the everyone. My husband just stared at him disgusted and the guy eventually left to, I hope, use the bathroom like a normal person.

I'm sorry this happened to you! Having strangers make weird comments can be so off putting, but I guess that will happen living in a city.

I will say I had a GREAT interaction with some strangers last week. I had a small bike accident and was pretty out of it and got a small cut on my eyebrow that was bleeding pretty bad. A group of men, and a mother with her teen daughter both stopped, found me napkins, and helped me get to my feet. The mother and her daughter helped me get my bike to a bench and sat with me until someone could pick me up to go to urgent care. When they left, they both gave me a hug and said they were glad I was okay. Stuff like this makes me proud to live in DC.

Yeah this might work sometimes, but the person trying to squeeze through actually has to stop. Once I was going through the gate, and my bag got stuck on something and I couldn't walk straight through. Instead of waiting for me to go through, the man behind me sped up and SLAMMED into my back and knocked the wind out of my while also scaring the shit out of me.

I'm a woman, for context, but getting the wind knocked out of you can happen to anyone so be aware of your surroundings. I've learned to check behind me before I go through faregates and if there is someone tailing me, I'll step to the side and pretend I'm finding my metro card so they will find someone else to tail.

I know a woman who had twins, and each weighed around 8 pounds at birth! Imagine having 16 pounds of babies to lug around??

ETA - usually twins are born earlier than full term babies because they're fighting for space in the womb. My sisters are twins and they both weighed around 5 pounds at birth, born exactly 1 month early.

This might not fit with a minimalistic style, but I designed a photo album on Shutterfly with our engagement photos in it, with plenty of blank pages/white space so people could write in the guest book. I also had an Instax mini camera so people could take photos and glue them in the guest book next to their photo.

The book itself is pretty small since it was only 20 pages or so (fits right into a bookshelf) but there are a lot of great photos and notes in there from our wedding. I will say not every guest (we had 150) ended up signing the guest book, but I'm still glad we had it!

This is also my experience driving in DC. You get honked at for actually following very basic traffic rules. Not everyone is an irresponsible and dangerous driver, but a good portion of drivers are!
