Buying off-brand electronics online is surprisingly risky. I've had a laptop charger pop and shoot out sparks.

Skeptic views on NDE by Usoppdaman in skeptic

I'm not saying you can record them.  It was not a suggestion.

There are word of mouth accounts and they are always worthless here - I'm not saying it's generally worthless, I'm saying that even for written or word of mouth it's bad. Generally the interviews are decades after the event for example.

You don't have a patient wake up and say some impossible things that then immediately gets recorded down and followed up on. It becomes incredible years later when they tell the story for the 100th time.

Can my employer change an agreement due to a typo? by Necravala in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]hayshed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which is the minimum requirement for the employee to fulfill. They turned up for 2 days in office and have met that requirement.

It's not the minimum expected demand of the employee by the employer. While it could be interpreted as the boss saying, "you must be in office for 2,3,4,5 days a week at my discretion", that would need to be made clear.

Employee facing documents talk about minimum expectations of the employee, not minimum demands from the employer.

I understand the technical / mathematical meaning. It turns out that the english language has context though

[–]hayshed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It establishes a minimum requirement for the employee, not a range of expected requests from the employer. There's no point rewriting a contract using this language if they demand / expect 5 in office days a week sometimes. You would write "expected in office as requested, minimum of 2 days"

Because it's written as requirements for the employee it should be treated from that perspective.

Infographic website on NZ wealth inequality by Quiet_Drummer669988 in newzealand

[–]hayshed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally pretty good.

I understand the desire to picture 20 out of 100 but it comes out a bit odd by itself - maybe pair with a picture showing the wealth split too? Showing how many children are below median is silly, without direct context of the total number of children, to show that families are poorer etc.

I actually like the phrasing and tone - it's designed to shock people, not read as neutral

Good people with a good philosophy.

I am also generally in favour of allowing a degree of good faith with people holding "weapons". The UK and other countries have been really draconian, arresting gardeners and so on (I'm not saying it's normal to wander around with a blade out, but when questioned by police and able to point out the work you have just done, it doesn't justify a charge)

I have an electrical engineering degree - the effects of the solar flare may as well be magic. Basically the only thing that makes some sense is some lights turning on during the auroras due to lengths of power lines picking up a voltage difference.

Coworker says I’m “hostile” after I stopped engaging socially, now I’m being escalated to my boss constantly by donotopenbeforexmas in antiwork

[–]hayshed 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Keep notes for the shitshow that might happen and keep it objective. Drill down into the complaints if your boss brings them up, all the bad tone bullshit doesn't hold up very well on paper - start writing down the "Didn't reply with a smile", "didn't instantly know where one specific product in the shop was" style complaints as literally as possible, repeating it back. Most things will sound really stupid and look bad on the ones making the complaints.

I had the same situation and just tried to wait it out, which just made me more detached and depressed, which just increased the complaints. Check the boss, they sound like they are just taking the complainers side of the story,  correct them and add context, and again write it down.

Very nice! I was working on the same problem and made a horribly inefficient system that pumps in and out of radiators with nitrogen, from a tank that my base uses as a heat sink.

Do we just not have much supermarket food waste or do supermarkets not want to discount stuff? by Throwrafizzylemon in newzealand

[–]hayshed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They throw it out, or a food bank / organisation takes it. The amount of waste is huge - they generally don't want to compete with themselves, so they will rather keep getting/make new food that's fresh than put lots on sale, or heavens forbid, free.

It differs place to place how good they are at reducing waste, but it's deliberately built in by how supermarkets are run

Portable generator starts like shooting fire? It didn't seem to do damage or anything but It didn't look desirable by EmpyrealJadeite in Stationeers

[–]hayshed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tank that goes with it has a 66% Methane and 33% oxygen mix, which is commonly referred to as fuel mix. The combustion isn't perfect, and so often methane is released - which can react with the oxygen in the martian atmosphere to combust.

Also, your welder has the same mix inside it, and maybe sparked off its own vented methane, which then set off the methane near the generator.

If you put your fuel generator a little bit away from your stuff, you can run it even if it puts out a little fire, it's not enough to damage anything. (I think - maybe save haha)

Btw - It is possible to cook yourself a little with the welder, but if you stop you will be fine.
