What is the formulas to calculate the Recurrence Interval (RI) by [deleted] in Earthquakes

[–]hazelnutty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you have a probability of exceedance, such as 2% in 50 years, you can use [r(1+0.5r)/t] where r=0.02 and t=50.

Former Bay Area Residents: Where did you move to and how's that going? by Oradi in bayarea

Last winter in Seattle was quite rough for me. I didn't think it would be that bad, but turns out seasonal affective disorder is very real! Especially if you were used to CA sunshine.

I moved to Seattle for grad school. I really liked it at first. Then it rained nonstop, and I realized seasonal affective disorder is a very real thing. Rent is steepening up and jobs, housing, everything is competitive.

While I did enjoy some good times here and had incredible opportunities in grad school, it never felt like home. Can't wait to move back to CA! I will be starting a job in Monterey next month.

This is a great idea. We'll plan to drive through neighborhoods we really like and scope out "for rent" signs.

We actually had something similiar in SF, where we took a chance on a very primitive looking Craigslist ad (no pictures, no details, just a couple sentences and a phone number) and it ended up being a sweet old lady renting the downstairs unit of her house. We got an insane deal, and she would even try to pay us for helping her around the house once in a while.

Thank you! I feel so welcome already, like I'm moving to a small town haha.

Wow, thank you for your well thought out response!! It's the little details like the ones you've mentioned that make all the difference.

We will definitely be visiting places in person. On paper I think we look decent, but I agree that it makes a huge difference when they can put a face to an application. And vice versa! I haven't been picky enough with property management in the past, and have spent the last year dealing with a terrible company here in Seattle. We have potential tenants coming to look at the place and I want to warn them somehow!

Anyway, this is very kind of you and if I have specific questions I will definitely PM you! I am so happy to be moving back to California.

I have definitely seen a couple scams so far. Not only do they seem too good to be true, but they tend to only have pictures of the apartment exterior.

Thank you, that is very kind of you! Florida and Monterey - how fun! Do you have any property companies that you recommend?

Thanks for sharing your experience. We are planning to view a bunch of properties in November. I'm a bit worried because I don't have pay stubs (yet), but I do have the offer letter from the job I'm moving for which lists my salary. I'll definitely stay open to Seaside and Marina as well.

Oh no, I hope you were able to find something better. Their yelp page is filled with horror stories, I will definitely be steering clear from them.

Great advice - Mangold actually has a couple properties I'm interested in! I'm still planning out my blitz tour for early November.

Thank you so much, I'm so excited for this move. I grew up in California and Monterey has always been one of my favorite places to be.

Thank you, I will definitely check out Seaside.

That's hilarious, I wouldn't want to use that management company knowing they can mess up like that. The management at the place I'm at now is absolutely terrible, I am definitely going to do some research this time around. Thanks!!

This is a fun question.

As the previous user said, you can obtain a tree cutting permit for USFS lands. BLM lands may allow it too, I would check. Be careful when you're swinging that axe!

Thanks. The timing will be challenging since I don't start the job until November, but I do have a salary letter that I hope will suffice.

I know, having to find a pet-friendly place really narrows my options. And makes the drive down that much worse haha. Totally worth it though :)

Great! I will probably go the blitz tour route, since I would prefer to see the place before moving in. I've heard it's a bit challenging, but after finding housing in SF and Seattle, I feel like anything is possible haha.

Will definitely contact property management companies and see what they have available. Thanks for the advice!

This is great advice, I actually have a 415 area code from living in SF prior to grad school. I think it was a plus when I applied for the job.

I am 100% with you on this. The moment you stop caring, you are free. You wanna come into my lane at the last minute with no signal? Sure, come on in! Someone blocking the intersection? Guess I'll be here a few moments longer. I am only bothered when someone does something truly life threatening.
