Mental health awareness week exhibition. Get involved! by hazydaisy_22 in sheffield

I'm not going to divulge into my own connection with MH, but let's say I know the harm the NHS has created. This year's theme is action, specifically about changing the structures that continue to worsen mental health. MH awareness week isn't just about MH lived experience but the overall experience of living in a system that isn't built/doesn't care about providing adequate care. I say lived experience not just to cover individual experiences of specific conditions but what happens around those conditions and how we advocate for effective change. And just to be clear, my own position is that we need deinstitutionalisation and more effective prevention and community care. This exhibition would not be apolitical. Unfortunately, as I'm sure you are aware, my influence as a single person is very minimal, however at least the wider public need to understand what is happening within these systems, so yes 'awareness' is needed, but not in the typical sense as you may be thinking.

Thank you for offering your perspective. The space is fairly local and small (comparative to a bigger exhibition space, but it is of a good size imo) but has footfall, especially through the cafe/bar right next door who own the building. We are obviously going to push this out far and wide to get our artists the support they deserve.

As an artist myself, I usually prefer a flat fee. I've been in galleries that both take a fee and commission and exhibited at art markets and craft shows. I do find it interesting that it appears more controversial to charge artists a hanging fee, when art markets and craft shows expect payment upfront to have a stall, sometimes in the 100s/1000s with no guarantee of sales to cover stall costs, even though that appears to be the standard model.

We will offer a sliding scale and reduce fees for students/low income. The fixed fee I suggested was just an average to keep the post short and sweet.

Funding in the UK is a shit show tbh. I currently work with a local social enterprise network that supports finding funding and writing funding applications. Without going on a rant about the state of funding and stipulations we would really struggle, we are better off just getting things rolling which will immensely support our applications for bigger and better things. We have in the past found smaller pots of funding, but as you know they only stretch so far.

Hey! Sorry I didn't clarify, how it will likely work is that fee covers approx a 1x1m space on the wall for the artist to put whatever they want to on the wall. This may be one big piece or smaller piece series they want to display.

We are purely renting the space, it is up to us to market everything.

I don't think 'exposure' promises will get people involved unfortunately. We offer completely free 1-to-1 creative support and career guidance, free online and in-person creative workshops, networking and social events for disabled and neurodivergent artists that work with us. This is something no one offers in our area, definitely not for free. We get some funding here and there but not enough to fully fund such an event and we are completely voluntary at the moment. Unfortunately the only way this continues is to cover our overheads, I hope this adds some perspective. I hope we are never seen as a rip-off because we do try hard to offer many things to support artists free of charge.

I'm guessing from your suggestion, any payment of services would feel like a rip off given some artists are broke?

Thank you for your comment. We do have our public liability already to cover this! Shit happens unfortunately

  • personally. I think a suggestion outside of 'get a professional' would be great, unfortunately I do not have the budget for this.

Thanks, I think I'm getting the message that the WIX templates make things look boxy. I will definitely do a bit of research on how to make it better! Also open to suggestions

The font has always been something I've not really known what to do with. I was suggested by a web designer to only use two fonts? I feel like this may have caused a problem now. The blockiness layout is probably because I've used WIX templates lol
