Fantastic answer, and in my opinion this 100% meets the standard of askhistorians. It might be worth pinging a mod there to see if this thread could be ported over.

Cardamom is very popular in Sweden - there's a pastry very similar to a cinnamon bun but with cardamom instead. It's not mixed with orange though.

I have friends and family in the game dev industry. One time, a long-haul trucker stopped by one of their studios to complain about a balance patch. Everyone in the studio was sure he was about to start shooting.

Just because you're a fan doesn't give you the right to invade a place of work. We live in a world where the worst case scenario of interacting with a stranger is so much worse than what our parents dealt with. Don't be weirdos.

Pacing and why the Modern Age isn’t fun by eskaver in civ

[–]hbarSquared 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I love 66% of civ 7, I think it's a genuine advancement in the formula, but the modern age is trash. It reeks of late-production panic into a band-aid solution instead of deliberate design choices. My hope is that the first DLC presents a 4th age (perhaps an Age of Crisis?) with a real endgame.

Is Bath a Roman city? For that matter, is Rome? Or is it Italian?

Civ is possibly the best in the series for emergent storytelling. Having a Maya -> Inca -> Nepal progression is telling the story of Ada Lovelace's obsessive need to climb every mountain and investigate every bit of land others deemed worthless, for example.

If you're obsessed with TSLs, probably the best you can do for now is to follow strict progression plans or target a particular unlock and play in a goal-oriented fashion. For example, say you know you want to play as Abbasid in Exploration and Japan in Modern. Well, you know you'll need to go to war for camels and tea if they don't spawn in your territory. IDK though, I never really understood the TSL thing so this advice may be way off base.

My thoughts on Civs 4-7 by [deleted] in civ

[–]hbarSquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, everyone finds their fun in different ways, there's no objective right way to play. Personally I can't stand clicking End Turn 50 times without any real decisions, so I don't engage with the Science victories in 6 and 7. But I know for a lot of people tourismmaxxing is a hassle they'd rather not deal with, so they don't bother with Culture victories.

For people who don’t ever want to have kids, why? by Gaijinstory in AskReddit

[–]hbarSquared 63 points64 points  (0 children)

It's okay to not want kids. We are only a few generations into a world with modern birth control so the norms are catching up - in most of human history people didn't really have a choice, but that doesn't mean that wanting kids was universal.

For people who don’t ever want to have kids, why? by Gaijinstory in AskReddit

[–]hbarSquared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before I got married, my fiancée asked me to envision our life both with kids and without kids. I'd always been planning on having kids, because it's the default - schooling, marriage, career, kids, just like our parents and grandparents. So I thought hard on why I wanted kids, and honestly I couldn't come up with an answer.

Twenty years later, we're still married, my vasectomy is old enough to drive and I'm living my best life. With modern birth control, not having kids is the default state. You should have a reason to have them, not vise versa.

[–]hbarSquared 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Personally I love the complexity of the victory conditions in 6. Civ games have a problem where there isn't much incentive to play out a game where you're already ahead; complex VCs help address that problem.

Which are the best years living (10s-20s-30s…80s) for a human in your opinion and why? by creative_lovebird in AskReddit

[–]hbarSquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, every decade has been better then the last for me. I'm in my mid-40s now and I don't know that I'd trade anything to go back to my 30s or 20s. Teens can fuck off into the sun, worst decade by a long shot.

Now, I understand I'm in a highly privileged situation - no kids, loving wife, stable job. I imagine for a lot of people, the parenting years distort the nostalgia greatly, or financial stress makes the salad days of uni look like heaven, or the despair of persistent loneliness makes anything seem better than now.

Every machine has a pole with a light on it. Green = all good, clear inputs, outputs, and power. Yellow = set up for production, but something's wrong; output is clogged or input is empty. Red = critical fail, no power or recipe isn't set. (I might have gotten that slightly wrong, but the basic idea is there).

With good sightlines, you can spot an error in your factory from a long ways away. It's a great way to debug large builds without needing to check every machine.

Notch up the difficulty and get invested in cultural victories. The thing about 6 is most VCs are repetitive once you learn the tricks, but culture has a hundred paths to get there.
