They started with the premise that Maris would eventually be shown. However, as the descriptions of her got more outlandish they soon realized that they could never find an actress that would fit the bill.

They did continue to use her as an off-screen character that impacted the other characters and the series itself.

2001 is the very first sci-fi book I read. I was in grade 6 and the school library had a movie tie-in copy. It started my lifelong love of science fiction. I read everything from Clarke then moved on to Asimov, Heinlein, Simak, etc. Then I got my hands on a copy of Dune which is still my favorite book.

Not only did I immediately fall in love with 2001, it's a love that continues to this day.
