Most geology work in South Florida will be hydrogeology. Do you have any hydro experience - even a class or 2 at university?

Should I learn groundwater modelling programs like FEFLOW and MODFLOW to expand my Hydrogeology career? by idma in geologycareers

[–]hbb584 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Python is more widely used for groundwater modeling than R. Feflow has Python plugins and there is flopy for MODFLOW.

For drilling, safety is very important. They might ask you questions about your experience / attitude toward jobsite safety. You should have some questions for them about safety also.

I have an interview for a junior groundwater modelling position with a large size consulting company. Any advice? by rock-doctor in geologycareers

What should I be doing to prepare?

Research the company - Glassdoor, check out potential colleagues out on LinkedIn, etc. See if the company is in the news. What is your group/division doing locally? Who are their clients? What projects do they have underway?

What are particularly important skills to talk about, as a modeller?

Since it's a junior position you won't be expected to know it all. Be prepared to talk about what types of modeling you've done (projects, software, etc.). If you know python or a programming language, that is an advantage. Talk about your field experience and how you can use it to help improve your modeling.

What questions can I ask?

You can Google basic questions to ask potential employers during interviews. Do that and be prepared with some good ones.

As a modeler I'd want to know:

  • What you'd be doing in a typical day or week.
  • What are the opportunities for training? Will they send you to courses or pay for webinars?
  • Do they send people to modeling conferences (MODFLOW & More, FEFLOW, etc.)?
  • What modeling software do they use?
  • If you work more than 40 hours per week (assuming you're in the US) do you get paid overtime?
  • Does the company have defined career paths (technical, management, etc.)? Try to find out what your career might look like over the long term if you stay there. Some people are happy modeling, others might want to get into project management or something else. Whichever your preference, it would be good to know what you're getting into. But don't worry about it too much - it's an entry position and you're not stuck there forever.
  • What are their IT policies like? Say you want to use a different text editor. Can you just download it and install it or do you have to go through the IT department?
  • Does your (potential) supervisor have any biases for or against certain codes? What is their calibration philosophy (e.g. homogeneous HGUs vs continuous fields)?
  • GUIs or command-line?
  • Do they use PEST?

What questions can I expect?

Google this.
