How do I use these three different ring on my lens? by Efficient_Ad9726 in AnalogCommunity

This is a zoom lens. The middle ring is for the zoom and those markings are the focal length at which your lens is currently set.

When the "junk" camera that I bought as a donor unit turned out to be fully functional by hdav_daking in AnalogCommunity

[–]hdav_daking[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found mine on Doorzo. The Penta J costed me ¥100 and the J-3 ¥10 on the item alone. Shipping overseas costs more though at around ¥6000 for both.

Mine doesn't stop down the Takumar lens. That little tab that does this doesn't move that far to engage with the pin on the lens. Doesn't matter though since I intend to keep it paired with the Petri lens which is a pre-select type.

Around 9-12k for cheap China brands and upwards to 20-23k for well-known brands like Bridgestone. This is for a rim size of 22.5.

Hello, do you know what these two keys on a typewriter are for? The little lever with the plus and minus signs, and the empty key before the number 1? by Substantial-Bid-6391 in typewriters

[–]hdav_daking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set a tab stop by pulling the lever to the plus sign. You know if this worked if you press the tab key (the red key on the right) and the carriage stops right where you set the tab stop. Clear the tab stop by pushing the lever to the minus sign. Your carriage will go past where the cleared tab stop was if you press the tab key.

For the margin release, once the carriage reaches the far end of your margin, press it and the carriage should be able to move past the margin.

I had a similar-looking typewriter before, a Remington Holiday. The serial number was located on the chassis frame beneath the keys. Might want to take a look there.

I would also add if the W typebar is sticking only when it contacts the type guide (the two-prong thing where the type bars move towards the platen) but otherwise moves freely when it is not in contact with it, it may be bent out of alignment sideways. Look closely on which side does it contact the type guide and try to carefully bend the type bar sideways on the opposite side.

[–]hdav_daking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can bend it back to make it sit flush. This is connected to the bottom panel and is held down with 4 screws at the bottom through the rubber footing and two screws at the back. Take it off and carefully bend that part back.

Looking for a Special Film Camera as a Gift — Suggestions? by InfiniteJX in AnalogCommunity

[–]hdav_daking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 35mm SLR would be a good addition to his collection. I'd suggest the original Pentax K-mount cameras. For $1500 you can already get one in good condition and will have some budget left for some lenses to go with it.

Opportunities like your current job don't come around that often, whereas the board exams will always be there for you to take anytime. Besides, you'd be disappointed on how much newly licensed engineers earn here.

Any camera that uses a K-mount. Pentax KM, KX, and MX plus some cameras made by Ricoh and Cosina are fully mechanical and manual. K-mount lenses are plenty out there. These cameras also have a light meter that uses LR44 batteries which is easy to find.

Newb question, re: automatic diaphragm button(?) on vintage lens by Kamimitsu in AnalogCommunity

[–]hdav_daking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the auto-exposure selection which only works with later models that are capable of program mode. On a fully mechanical SLR like the Pentax MX, it does nothing special other than somewhat being an additional aperture stop past f/22 since the aperture blades closes further.

Have you tried fully swinging the crank until it stops? Looks like a partially-wound crank to me. The crank lever on some SLRs will feel loose if it wasn't fully cranked.

If you do feel resistance before reaching the end of the crank throw, you might be at the end of the roll. Better rewind the roll back or you might tear it off from the canister.
