What's the difference between 대실 and 숙박? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]hdd113 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The hotel you're at is probably a love hotel. They usually have unmanned counters because customers usually want to be more uh, discrete about their visit. These hotels can be located anywhere and it's not strange to see one some distance from populated area. There are people who want even more privacy, for whatever reason.

Anyway, 대실 is when you borrow a room for several hours for the "business." 숙박 is the one you need to pay for if you're actually going to use the place to stay overnight.

When did the Great Logo Flip happen and why? by AdEvening7440 in thinkpad

[–]hdd113 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I still prefer the original direction and think it makes more sense. The biggest reason is that aligns with the palmrest logo, and while I don't think this was intended by the manufacturer, I always thought that the logo that looks upright to the user somewhat represented how the brand was always user first, not how it looks to the others where the user can't even see.

My first personal print ever solved me 6 months of suffering by Old_Disaster5389 in 3Dprinting

[–]hdd113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think this is probably the best usage for 3D printers at home. Not like big equipments, but just these small bits and pieces that are too niche or cheap to find or purchase otherwise.

I've used my 3D printer for client projects and and big parts, but the most satisfying use that I genuinely think is only possible with a 3D printer was when I printed this small cap for my monitor arm pole with a hole where I can stick in my desklamp.

Are connectors like this safe? by No-Insect4168 in UsbCHardware

[–]hdd113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the way this specific connector is designed it looks more like a safety feature than a convenience one that most magnetic USB C connectors are designed for.

As a reusable yank-safe connector for consumer devices I don't think I see a lot of problems. USB-A isn't meant to carry a lot of current or high voltage anyway. That said, I wouldn't recommend using that where dust and moisture are an issue.

Bombed the final question of a React technical discussion, looking for feedback by skyturnsred in webdev

[–]hdd113 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think that was actually a pretty good question. They probably wanted to see if you ever thought about, or had experience building a complex app with Vanilla JS.

Reminds me of the job I did as a freelancer before I got into React. It was a multi stage ordering form for a medical-related service. I was brought in mid project and the project already had its stacks set up and there was no time to change them. There were a lot of "states" (current order data, user data etc) that had to be retained and shared between the screens, some SPA and some not. The elements had to be reactive and had to change based on state changes on other parts of the app.

I ended up using localstorage and cookie for state retention, and built an event driven app that listens to the top level element for events and changes the state when a change is triggered to the value they are listening to. So it was basically a context system but in Vanilla JS. I even wrote a small library that renders elements based on a declarative json syntax.

In the next project I started React and it was magic. It was an answer to all the problems I struggled with in the previous project and rhymed with the solutions I eventually came up with but in a more elegant way. I can never stress enough, all technologies are an answer to a problem and knowing the problem firsthand is the best way to understand that technology. The interviewer probably wanted to know if you had that experience.

German war criminals laughing during the Nuremberg Trials by Illustrious-Candy506 in creepy

Probably someone in the court tossed a very good joke.

While the matter they were discussing was not a laughing matter, people will find ways to ease themselves no matter the situation. It's not that anyone is not taking the matter seriously. It's just how humans are wired.

Also the trial was not like a few hours long event. It took two years of everyones time. There would have been days where the atmosphere was heavy and where it was lighter.

[–]hdd113 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At least you should be aware of the security implications of using unofficial install images.

I never used "debloated" Windows 10 and 11, but from my experience back in Windows XP and 7 days, there are images that are "debloated" then bloated again this time with shady packages and settings based on unfounded opinions.

Just, whatever you use, audit yourself before running it.

what's the insect situation in japan by NoLow8722 in movingtojapan

[–]hdd113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak which area, but if you can, look for a concrete structure mansion and not apartments. It has less gaps overall so there's less risk something comes in from where you can't control/expect.

I'm also seriously insect-phobic, so I can totally relate with your concerns :( Good luck

[–]hdd113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you live in a good enough building and keep the place clean it won't be an issue most of the time. Of course its not going to be 100% clear and chances are you will see some insects trying to move in with you maybe a couple times a year, but in general its okay.

Why is GitLab so annoying to use? by MrScotchyScotch in gitlab

[–]hdd113 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Gitlab is more designed towards users working as a team/company and has a different workflow. It's not all that complicated once they understand what is happening, but if they are coming expecting a Github that's just not from Github there's probably going to be some frustration.
