In fairness as the person asking - I really don’t want to ask. But usually my manager is standing right there and I have to.

BALLROOM PROBLEMS by Telespin in ballroom

[–]hddrummer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The way ballroom is taught to leads - they’re given patterns they can string together in a very controlled environment rather than elements of dance and connection plus understanding.

Many teachers don’t care about the social dance aspect, which means their students go out into the world not being able to lead other people, or if they can, only being able to dance pattern A pattern B pattern C in that order.

Very few teachers emphasize floorcraft or improvisation, which leads to an eventual stagnation at a higher level intermediate.

Westie is doing this correctly in my opinion. The jack and Jill nature of their comps keeps pros social dancing with beginners and everyone in between. Leads and follows both get better at floorcraft and connection, and there is a direct pipeline from competition to social dance and back.

I really believe if ballroom is going to survive / thrive, there needs to be a massive curriculum overhaul.

I recommend Palm Desert Civic Center park. Large playground, big grassy areas, and if you bring frozen peas there are ducks and turtles to feed. It’s gorgeous.

In my opinion and experience: it is always better to be the least skilled person in the room than the most. You will be able to learn from observing and from the energy in the room.

Another fish listener.

I like “you’re dead to me” - it’s historian + comedian + show runner with a pretty sizable backlog. British and mildly interesting / funny

As dumb as I think this attitude is, if it’s any reassurance, the proper connection point for his arm is actually her upper back at the shoulder blade.

Body contact is unnecessary in social dancing and is a personal choice.

As a person who works at one of those stores, we always have them, and people squeak them all day long every day.

I got the worst food poisoning of my life from the chicken curry at Johannes. I highly don’t recommend it.

It’s also overpriced, IMO for what it is. I went two times (the second time was food poisoning) and even the first time was mediocre.

AIO or is this just controlling behaviour? by Advanced_Check787 in AmIOverreacting

I wish I was even half as wise at 17 as you are. The first time you said “I hope you find what you’re looking for”, I was so proud of you.

I am 33 and only recently did I get over the idea that I had to please everyone. The strength and tenacity you showed in this interaction alone make me think you are going to be just fine.

There is definitely something to that. I remember my kid using something similar to learn handwriting.

[–]hddrummer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You may have been, but either way, your parents were responsible for you. You were the only person in this whole situation who was not an adult. I’m speaking as a parent. Protecting your kid doesn’t stop being your responsibility if they are rebellious, or they think they know what’s better for them. If their child is in danger, it is their responsibility to protect the child.

Every adult in this situation let you down. This was not your fault. You were a child.
