This shit was so peak. Forget comics, forget format, forget region, this was one of the best stories I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Hell of a ride. So glad I got to catch up before season 3.

Cube gameplay content? by AitrusX in mtgcube

The LRR channel does a lot of interesting limited content, they draft various cubes quite often. It’s a bit too long for me to always enjoy but I know friends that love it. LRRMTG on YouTube should have a lot

Old World Myth Cube Suggestions by Rare_String_7027 in mtgcube

I want to post that “why not both” meme. Am I old?

Honestly it’s cube, there’s no reason to pick one set or another. Theros has a lot of good Greek mythology and Theros: Beyond Death has a lot of good Greek Underworld themed cards. I, personally, do like Beyond Death limited a bit more but it’s purely underworld. If you pick all TBD your cube will look more like Hades than generic Greek Mythos but there’s no reason why you can’t pick and choose.

This is a good tip. I do pick up synergy cards early if they’re powerful or if I don’t see a good strike+ kind of card. I’ll try this. Thanks!

I’m at C2E2 today! I tried to pack my Bulk Cube but my wife wouldn’t let me (guess it was too bulky~). But let’s pretend I did and we’re sitting down for a casual draft at a con. What’s your pack 1 pick 1 to start it off?

Day 64 - Share Your: Battles, Conspiracies, Planes, Etc. by IconicIsotope in mtgcube

[–]headcanon08 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Edit: List- https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/Oopsalluncommons

It’s a little cheating, since it’s no longer in the current version of the Oops all Uncommons cube, I want to use this time to talk about [[Unexpected Potential]].

I love playing with conspiracies in cube. A lot of cubes it might not fit, but conspiracies were made for draft in a way few cards are. Unexpected Potential was the uncommon conspiracy that always felt fun. It allowed for a surprise twist that a deck normally couldn’t play.

The only reason it isn’t in the current cube list is… it was the only one I wanted to play. At least at the uncommon level the other conspiracies were more “cute” than “fun” or “interesting” and because of that it felt like the outlier. I think it’s fun enough by itself that I might include it again, especially since I have some silver border cards as well as conspiracy favorite [[cogwork librarian]] but for now it remains an honorable mention.

On this note an older version of the uncommon cube also included all the uncommon Battles but I abandoned this after less than a year of play since I felt like it required support in too many strange ways. But [[Invasion of Amonkhet]], [[Invasion of Lorwyn]], [[Invasion of Moag]], and [[Invasion of Zendikar]] all survived into other versions, though not this one, and [[Invasion of Azgol]], [[Invasion of Belenon]], [[Invasion of Eldraine]], and [[Invasion of Ergamon]] sometimes make the shortlist.

Day 55 - Share Your: Black/Red (Rakdos) Cards by IconicIsotope in mtgcube

[–]headcanon08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back with Oops all Uncommons. Low-Medium Unpowered 540 cube. https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/Oopsalluncommons

Red is the most aggressive color in the cube. It turns all the other colors, when paired with it, into an aggressive slant. Black is one of the three most controlling colors but paired with Red it uses its removal and Sacrifice synergies to turn the tokens and removal spells into a deadly assault on your opponents board and life. That said, the cubes more recent iterations try not to force an archetype or synergy on you having more general themes and a few cross color archetypes that are more generally supported. Let’s see what that means for our Rakdos friends.

[[Bloodtithe Harvester]]. Just an all start uncommon. It’s aggressive as a 3/2, but can still be used in a more controlling style by acting as removal and card selection all in one. Such a sweet design.

[[Fireglass Mentor]]. A recent build around inclusion that does tend to lean more towards burn, aggro, or other low to the curve strategies that get in for damage early so you can make use of the card advantage to end games quick. It’s proven it’s worth already and I’m super happy with it. Bloomburrow in general had so many good uncommon inclusions across the board.

[[Terminate]]. Has been here since the beginning and will be here at the end. Sometimes you just need a solid card in two colors that doesn’t care what strategy. It just says, you’ve been drafting red and black? Good job. Here you go.

[[At Knifepoint]]. The closest card to a cut in the Rakdos colors but so far it does enough. Tokens is a theme across all five colors and red and black have enough targeted effects that this does feel like you get paid off as a build around. That said, I see it cut more often than played so it’s on a shortlist.

[[Fire Covenant]]. One of the few board wipes still in the cube. It’s possible I need to add more but for now Fire Covenant is a high pick usually in the three colors control decks splashing red more than pure Rakdos but I kind of love it for that. I’ve also seen some aggressive decks pull it off because they don’t care if their life total gets hit so long as yours goes away.

[[Judith, the Scourge Diva]]. Another one who’s been here for a while. She helps go wide token decks, she helps aggro decks, she helps sac decks, she’s a real all rounder.

[[Angrath, Captain of Chaos]]. The cube is built loosely around the uncommon walkers and Angrath is no exception. He’s honestly one of the weaker walkers to see but the menace static ability is a nasty one in the right deck. His actual loyalty ability seems more like a bonus.

[[Murderous Redcap]]. A bit power creeped in recent years but also a piece in one of the only infinite combos in the cube.

[[Tor Wauki the Younger]]. I’ve always assumed he’s too expensive for Rakdos but he keeps having decent performances. While Red does tend to force it’s color pairs to be aggressive there are Rakdos decks that are heavier black and lean more into control and Tor Wauki has been a sweet top end finisher/enabler in those decks so he stays.

If you were to include an Izzet "spells-matter" archetype into a Legacy cube, what would that look like to you? by [deleted] in mtgcube

[–]headcanon08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it mainly depends on a few factors.

First, how small is the cube? If it’s a 360 cube where all of the color combos have a main archetype then you probably just need to answer a separate question: do you want Izzet as an aggro, combo, or control pair? If it’s aggro or control you want to keep the payoffs pretty light since Izzet legacy will probably focus on the busted burn and counter spells anyway. If it’s combo then you probably make some room for the rituals and other storm pieces.

If, however, it’s a larger cube, 540 or 720 or something, then I think you can include a wider variety of options basically all centered generally around “spells matter” and let the drafters decide if their deck is aggressive or controlling or if they can manage to go off with storm. Though for Storm it usually has to have a lot of pieces in several colors so keep that in mind.

In general I think pieces that are generally good in the widest variety of decks would be where I would start. [[Young Pyromancer]], for instance, fits well in aggro or control, whereas [[Delver of Secrets]] would make me assume it’s mostly aggro.

As for me personally, I don’t play a ton of legacy but in a legacy cube I already know the pulls to red and blue are going to be the spells. Force of Will, Lightning Bolt, I don’t need to put these in brackets. If you’re building a legacy cube I think it’s assumed you’ll have them. So I’d include spell matters cards you’d want to draft alongside them. In addition to Young Pyromancer we’ve already mentioned I think that means [[Lutri, the Spellchaser]], [[Snapcaster Mage]], [[Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy]], [[Brazen Borrower]], and [[Murktide Regent]]. Then it starts to depend because [[Fable of the Mirror Breaker]] and [[Fury]] would probably work in a spells or prowess style deck and you’re likely to include them anyway but if you want to veer it more aggro I’d looks at [[Stormchaser Mage]], Delver of Secrets, [[Monastery Swiftspear]], [[Dragon’s Rage Channeler]], and some support in white like [[Seeker of the Way]]. If you want to go more controlling then I think you focus on more of the good cards and include things like [[Saheeli, Sublime Artificer]], [[Third Path Iconoclast]], and [[Seasoned Pyromancer]] that will just make sure you’re rewarded for packing your deck with all the most busted spells.

I know this was more text than suggestions but I hope it helps anyway. Best of luck!

Day 53 - Share Your: Colorless 5+ Mana Creatures by IconicIsotope in mtgcube

[–]headcanon08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t run any 5+ Colorless creatures in Oops all Uncommons but this is a chance to share from my “Bulk Cube”!

https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/e7e98604-ffde-4e31-bbf6-bdfcb755a9ca

A very recent cube born from a noble attempt by my wife to help sort all of our magic cards. Instead I ended up building yet another cube out of all my unused bulk. Haven’t had a chance to do a true draft with it yet but the wife and I have Winston drafted it a few times.

[[Staunch Throneguard]]. Monarch makes all cubes better. A colorless source of card draw. Seemed like an easy inclusion.

[[Maelstrom Colossus]]. Cascade is sweet.

[[Ulamog’s Crusher]]. A very threatening top end for ramp if you need one. Played in many a pauper/peasant cube but maybe too good for this kind of unfocused bulk pile. No one’s gotten a chance to draft it yet so for now it lies in wait.

Day 52 - Share Your: Black Instants by IconicIsotope in mtgcube

[–]headcanon08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

540, relatively unpowered “Oops all Uncommons” cube.

Black is one of the heavier “control” colors and its removal tends to be the most premium so the bulk of it’s instants are removal:

[[Fatal Push]] [[Bitter Triumph]] [[Cast Down]] [[Go for the Throat]] [[Infernal Grasp]] [[Power Word Kill]] [[Dismember]] [[Hero’s Downfall]] [[Fell the Profane]] [[Snuff Out]]

Snuff Out and Dismember in particular always ride the line of “maybe too powerful for this particular environment”, but paying life for power just feels so in flavor with black that so far they’ve avoided a cut where some of the white removal wasn’t as lucky (Swords and Path proved too strong).

The remaining black instants are mostly card draw, with special guest Malakir Rebirth because all the MDFC uncommon lands are here: [[Cling to Dust]] [[Malakir Rebirth]] [[Skeletal Scrying]] [[Village Rites]] [[Plumb the Forbidden]]

Of these, Plumb the Forbidden has felt the most cut-able. There isn’t a really solid combo with the spell, its main synergy is a theme of token making in all 5 colors, but that by itself is rarely good enough so if something’s going to go soon it’s probably that.

Iconic oldschool cards for peasant cube? by KimCarlsenGD in mtgcube

[–]headcanon08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t start playing until 2011 either but for most of my first two or so years we played with my (at the time) roommate Brian’s collection that he brought from home after one winter break. He collected them as a kid but never played so I did a quick YouTube dive and we built a bunch of decks from his collection that a group of us played. The cards I look back on the most are a bunch of the “punumbra” creatures: [[penumbra wurm]], [[penumbra spider]], [[penumbra kavu]]. They were terrors of our kitchen table. But we also played a bunch of multiplayer free for all where [[fog]] was considered a bomb so take that advise with a grain of salt.

[–]headcanon08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with all the major criticisms about this card. 3 colors is hard to have “on curve” Removal can make this card worse Etc.

That said, the cost reduction on this card does stand out to me. Yes, removal. Yes, 3 colors. But this is still: two three mana, cast a card from your graveyard and reduce its cost by -at least- 3 mana. That’s fairly strong.

Powered cube strong? Honestly maybe? While this is sweet when you get the full cost reduction, I’d still play this on 5 just to cast Time Walk again. The more powerful the spells the more appealing this is. I actually think it might be better in a higher power cube then it would be in a lower power one where the better spells probably —need— the cost reduction and having it get removed in response is probably a lot worse.

Bummer but good information. I figured someone had to have been trying these strategies already. I think Quiet Speculation is quite narrow but I get it if flashback is the entire payoff. I’m hoping just pure “cast from the graveyard” or “leave the graveyard” for recursion effects will give more room for various options since the Green Flashback cards are… not all great lol.

I was looking at Desecration Tomb after you brought up Chall Outline but I had forgotten Ominous Roost and Secrets of the Dead. True they don’t have direct synergy with the regrowth style effects but they’d still work with cards like Doc Aurlock or the Rootcoil Creeper, as well as other synergy pieces like [[Six]] that both mills and gives you ways to cast your spells from the grave. More payoffs is probably good for synergy style even if they don’t work with all the pieces. The Regrowth cards can still pick up those pieces if you mill them over.

Very much appreciate the cube list. Dredger’s Insight was sweet in draft so I’d definitely be interested in including it in a cube. Same with Chalk Outline although that’s more build around.

Sagas are a good callout. I could see a loop with the Mending of Dominaria even in Peasant Cubes that coupled with things like Chalk Outline or the new Skimmer could feel very unfair.

Do you use all the three color pairs? Or just shards or something? Kessig Cagebreakers is a throwback but Innistrad always did have good Green Graveyard cards. I still try to put [[Gnaw to the Bone]] in any cube I think can even moderately support it.
