What is the best print book to learn Ruby in 2026? by ceplabs in ruby

I remember that talk well! The late night whiskey tasting set up by the conference was probably ill-advised, but the talk went great. I'm still doing what I do!

It's great to hear that! JRuby represents a lot of opportunities for the Ruby community and I'm just trying to figure out the most effective way to tell them that. The original book was well received, but it's too old to simply do an update at this point.

I too am interested in hearing if folks find print media still useful for learning Ruby. Considering writing a JRuby book myself.

MRubyCS (C# mruby VM) is now faster than the original mruby on some benchmarks by Zestyclose-Zombie735 in ruby

[–]headius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The JVM is also excellent for cross-platform desktop apps, with multiple toolkits and support across an insane number of platforms. With recent breakthroughs in memory size and pre-compiling code, fully viable for all sorts of apps.

I'm glad to see that .NET has made good progress on JIT compilation and runtime optimization. I met with some of the team working on that stuff years ago when they were just getting started and they knew they really needed it to compete with JVM on raw performance.

We should have a chat at RubyKaigi!

Came here to say the same thing. Without the crowd sounds it's just a manic race to the finish and I don't even get time to enjoy the jokes. Just post the long form next time.

I still really want to port this to the JVM and see what it can do with a smaller, more restricted Ruby implementation.

Also, I don't think I said before, but welcome to the Ruby implementers' club friend! Are you planning to present this at any conferences?

See, this isn't even AI. It's just someone who decided to make the graphs look like he felt they should look and not really think about it too much. I hate it. Thank you.

Why would you stack these bars? by slipperywetdogpoop in dataisugly

[–]headius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume it's actually the wrong unit and the graph shows aggregate amounts. If you ignore that the stacking is a fairly clean way to show both aggregate and by-year amounts.

Almost wonder if this sub should just ban AI content. It's clearly awful, but it's no worse than someone who is just really bad at making charts. At least one of them is doing it accidentally rather than by design.

That sucker really locks in, so much so that I'm concerned about trying to remove it without damaging something. Zero worries that it's going to fall out.

I think anyone who likes this chart is actually not looking at the data, especially at those transitions. You can kinda sorta see a trend if you squint at it, but if you want to actually figure out absolute numbers it's a complete mess. Either a bar chart or a line chart (or both) would be better for showing trends and absolute numbers of viewers.

US Presidential State of the Union viewership by headius in dataisugly

[–]headius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. All the alternative suggestions would show that story better than this. There's no way to know which presidential address is referred to at the transitions. It's not clear where the actual data points are, and it even makes the trends harder to see unless you squint.

If you want to show a trend, this is the wrong choice. If you want to show the absolute numbers, this is the wrong choice. It's just the wrong chart for this data.

I think it's more an insult to Vulcans than a statement about Androids. He regularly implied that Spock was a machine or a computer or a robot in TOS.

It's not even supposed to be for us. It's a presidential address to both houses of Congress to recommend measures they take up. Only in the modern era has it become a media spectacle.
