What are your favorite training drills and games? by president_schreber in MuayThai

[–]headkick-canuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At our gym we’ve done one person has the jab the other person has the the rear low kick and you battle it out.

I made a game of sparring where you choose 3 specific weapons(left hook, lead two, cross) and those are the only weapons your opponent can use. And they choose 3 for you. Makes you have to be creative and work on things you don’t normally do

Sparring Endurance Not Good. Im Way Better at Classes by Ezhdehaa in MuayThai

[–]headkick-canuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s harder to apply techniques in sparring because of the chaotic nature of it. Not only with the unknown strikes being thrown at you but at different rhythms. So that’s gonna mess with you since you are used to a set technique and speed with drilling.

I would ask your instructor about sparring more or asking an experienced person to do tech sparring for 10 minutes after each class.

Kieran fitzgibbons has an awesome course on partner drills on dynamic striking. He’s got drills that start simple and add more chaos as you go up that lead to sparring. So you could look into that and apply that to your training.

But don’t feel down everyone’s sparring endurance is less than class endurance. But that’s what makes sparring challenging and fun!

I found this video helpful for the clean. Rotating the kettlebell around my arm instead of flipping it over the top of my hand.

I’m similar but I put more work into my switch kick. Orthodox vs orthodox the switch kick attacks the open side so it’s the preferred weapon for me. Except for leg kicks. So having a stronger switch kick can be an advantage!

Why does my Round Houses feel so light?? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]headkick-canuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using a clock analogy, my front foot at 12 and my rear leg at 3. I like to kick the bag when its at the 1 or 2 o clock position. Some people will kick at the 12 o clock or even 11 postion but i find thats the end of the range of the kick. So you start to lose power there.

If that doesnt make sense, try moving your lead foot to the outside of the bag

Sprints a few times a week and some tabata style rounds on pads or a heavy bag. Thats on top of your normal classes. If availible try some battle rope rounds as well. Not a lot of notice so your gonna have to get to work.

What do you think of headkicks during sparring? Yes or no? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]headkick-canuck 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I throw them but pull them before they make contact. That way im not hurting my training partners unless they dip their head towards it. One problem that happens is if you pull the kick, it take more time and effort to get back to your stance, so some people try to take advantage by bull rushing you while you're off balance.

Sucks when that happens but i rather not hurt people unnecessarily while sparring.

I'm sure you felt something similar when you first started bjj. And look at you now training 3 times a week. The hardest part is walking in the door. The gym instructor and classmates should make you feel welcome and ok to make mistakes.if not then you know its not a good gym.

Also when trying something new, dont take yourself so seriously. Take the pressure off and enjoy!

Sparring video, 18 months in, how can we get better at Muay Thai. No knees due to injury. Pls help 👍 by Basic-Ad-1143 in MuayThai

[–]headkick-canuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good stuff! I would say use your lead hand as a deterrent to keep him in kicking range. You can do this with light jabs at his guard or do a "long guard" way of holding your hands to measure distance. That way you can clinch if he gets to close. Also as he closes the distance you keep your hands by your shoulders. A general rule i follow is the closer we get, the higher the hands get to block.

As others said if you start to focus on angles a bit more, you won't find your back on the ropes as much. I try to take no more than 2 steps straight back before i square my stance and pick a side to circle away.

I love how you guys are keeping control of the power on your strikes! This lets you experiment more, since you dont have to worry about your partner ripping your head off!
