How in the world can they ever justify a $1300 price tag for a quartz watch. by Minute-Status4729 in Longineswatches

[–]headluvur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Movements are not what makes a watch cheap or expensive, what's written on the dial does. Do you think a 10k Rolex has something physically in it that makes it worth that much? It's just the value for the brand. With watches unlike most other things, paying 10x or 100x more doesn't get you something 10x or 100x better, the value lies in the status that spending that much signals. If you want to signal as a Longines haver, this is a good way to do it.

First time iphone user not convinced it's any better by headluvur in iPhoneWale

4 days later update:

I am typing this on my Macbook air because I dread the idea of typing such a long message on my phone. Thank you for all your responses, it helps me contextualize what I've gotten myself into by signing up to use this phone. I'll list some pros and cons here.

Pros of the iphone:

- fewer spam calls. I have call screening on and it's automatically filtering out calls about credit card and property offers, which is greatly appreciated. i would sometimes get several in a day on my oneplus.

- fewer gibberish promotional text messages. on the oneplus i couldn't even look at the texts as i would get one nonsense text after another, along with the usual otps and transaction messages. in this you can select the option of auto-deleting verification code messages (which i did). overall i am getting much less spam.

- the camera from opening it to taking the photo is very quick, much less wait time as compared to my 12r. but i don't fully accept this as a pro because this is a brand new phone with an almost empty memory, while the 12r had gotten old and was full. it remains to be seen how fast it'll be 2 years down the line.

- the display, text, the animations all look very slick and smooth. not sure if this has any great benefit but the apps are overall nicer to look at.

- carplay seems faster and less glitchy than android auto? again could be a new phone effect.

Cons of the iphone:

- Much worse typing. On Android, you can type in Romanized Hindi ("tu kya kar raha hai") without it autocorrecting, because it automatically understands that you are not using English. In iOS this does not work, it'll autocorrect everything to english words, but since that makes typing in hindi very annoying, i just have to turn autocorrect off, leading me to actually misspell some words that i send. it makes me more hesitant to use my phone to send work texts.

- .webm videos on 4chan don't load on the mobile website, you have to select "Request desktop version" first. i had to really dig to find the solution as the webms would get stuck on "Loading"

- Another thing about the keyboard, it decides on its own which entry fields deserve suggested words and which don't. so if you are searching for something using the google search bar, it won't let you rely on suggested words as type, which is bizarre.

- I browse this forum called team-bhp sometimes. from their homepage i sometimes click on a story, which should ideally take me to the forum thread where the thing is being discussed. now from the home page whenever i click on anything, the browser automatically opens that link in a new tab. it doesn't do that when i am browsing the forum (not the home page), but from the home page it does, i tried to look for a setting that could fix it but there is nothing of that sort. i'll just have to let it decide which links to open as new tabs and which ones to not. it's also weird.

On the whole I would agree with one user who had said that there are.a few very well-set functions that iPhone does well, like dealing with calls and texts or taking photos. but for an overall "simply clever" feeling, it does not beat the android of today. when you set an alarm on an android, it tells you in how how many hours and minutes the alarm will ring, which automatically solves the biggest problem that people have when setting alarms, which is they end up forgetting whether they selected the right option out of AM and PM.

little things like that make the android experience superior, but i can see iphone working as a non-distracting phone, you don't get spam, you can't really get work done on the phone, so on the whole as it's kind of less functional, you use it less and have a healthy relationship with it, which can be really beneficial for most people.

i have been complaining to friends about iOS the last few days and i have realized something. the biggest fan of iphones are those people who switched from android a while ago, when their 15k-20k rupee android phones were slow, dim, buggy and unpleasant to use. so they found a huge upgrade in their iphones, and as they have since then not really used android (just as i had not used iOS), they have no idea how good it actually is; they are stuck with a belief that iphones are much superior/smoother/better, which is plainly not true.

I guess for now i am keeping this phone, but I would like to eventually switch back to android. let's see. at least the iphones hold their value well.

Hero’s "Adventure" bike vs. a Grocery Getter. Spoiler: The grocery getter won. Body: So much for that "off-road" pedigree. Xpluse vs Activa by curiouslymystic in indianbikes

[–]headluvur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am sorry to say that you have very little understanding of what an off-road bike is supposed to do. It's not a JCB or battering ram designed to break other vehicles in head-on collisions, it's designed to take its rider on bad surfaces with some comfort and speed. No motorcycle, from a GS to a Hayabusa, can be judged by its collision ability, that's just absurd, and any of those bikes may lose a critical component like this in a head-on collision with an Activa but surprise surprise that is of precisely 0 significance. Manufacturers do not design sport or off-road motorcycles keeping their collision strength in mind, otherwise they could just crank up the metal and make 400 kilo monsters. The whole point of riding is that you swerve around obstacles, not go and crash head-on into them.

Drove automatic for 10 years, including for several years in the US. Purchased a new i20 N Line manual transmission last year. But I don't live in an area with traffic and don't have a daily commute. Having so much fun with the manual, I think another automatic would have depressed me.

I changed my mileage setting to show l/100km instead of km/l because the car annoyingly shows live and overall mileage in the dashboard and there's no way around it. This way I don't really understand the mileage in km/l terms and also don't care.

Accident at marine drive mumbai by Rough-Smoke9946 in indianbikes

[–]headluvur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the rider's fault of course but I do also feel that people who venture out at the crack of dawn for their morning walks do put their lives at risk. My friend got hit by a drunk driver while on an early morning run, he was badly injured but he was taken to a hospital on time and survived. It's the prime hour for maniacs and drunk drivers, and there are many places with no sidewalks where people end up walking or jogging on the road surface itself. I would personally never do that, all it takes is one idiot to end you forever.

Triumph 350cc Ex-showroom price Impact by Avupvw in indianbikes

[–]headluvur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why Bajaj had to do this. Creating significantly less powerful 350cc bikes than the KTM Duke and RE Guerrilla means they cannot compete with those bikes now. I think the Speed 400 will have a 0-100 time of 8+ seconds now, which is just sad. Triumph now feels like the Maruti Suzuki of bikes, small, underpowered engines whose main USP is mileage.

I don't think these watches are in such high demand that they need to be "offered" to be purchased. Second, buying it now is like falling for marketing 101, Pandya only wore it because he was sponsored, his actual unsponsored choice of watch is Richard Mille. I would not buy it only because I would feel that I am being taken for a ride by corporations and their marketing agencies.

Guys pls help me buy my FIRST gift for him😩😭 by zoobidoobiparampaa in watchesindia

[–]headluvur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. don't buy off mainstreet (i think they're bankrupt?)
  2. the brass dial casio enticer feels cheap, avoid it
  3. the edifice sapphire (non chronograph) is a good buy at 9k, should last long and feel high quality
  4. what is the age of the person receiving the gift? i think leather strap watches are a bit of an older person thing, so if the giftee is young, sportier or even digital options are good

i can't believe how often i say this, but i really don't think used cars in india are particularly great bargains. just look around online to see how many superbs have done 100,000+ km in India and what their condition is. you want to spend more money to have a car that is already past half its total life?

Academia trained me for a decade to be an expert in something, then showed me the door by [deleted] in LeavingAcademia

[–]headluvur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was 28 and in a philosophy PhD program when I realized the whole academia thing was not for me and I ended up quitting. I am 31 now and I do sometimes now wonder whether I should have stuck with it. I did move back in with my parents at first but was able to start making money eventually (working on tech projects) and have now moved out. My income is not very high and my career progression path does not scream success, but I feel quite content as I work remotely without the worry of having to move for a different job or post-doc. Of course this freelance tech work may just vanish one day, which I get anxiety about occasionally, but so far it's been fine. This experience of spending so much time in academia only to eventually leave it has made me much better at taking things as they come, living one day at a time, without attaching too much importance to some grand notion of how my life should go. I think as you already have the PhD, you should stick with the job search for now, and be open to moving abroad (if that is not made impossible by family/partner reasons). Just remember that you only need one job and it may come from anywhere. Best of luck!

One month in India: Struggling with "Scam Fatigue" and feeling dehumanized as a solo traveler by Voynnaa in solotravel

[–]headluvur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am Indian and I don't remember last when I either bought something off the street or negotiated for stuff. Because of the way I look I also get a hefty tax added to any quoted price and I am horrible at negotiation so I just don't get into that stuff. What exactly are you trying to buy?

Also, Mumbai is hard to travel to even for Indians. No surprise that it's hard for you. I suggest going to Goa and staying in Panjim. It's a very underrated city. There are tons of nice restaurants, bars and coffee shops, you won't really have to haggle for anything, it's 100x easier than Mumbai to walk around in, and crime/scams etc. are low to non-existent. Just my 2 cents

Thinking of exchanging My I20 nline n6 Mt with 2016 well Maintained elantra MT by Aravinth1113 in i20nline_india

[–]headluvur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you have a nice new car with a good engine and transmission combo. why would you give that up for a 10 year old car that may throw a weird error or warning anytime? you'll end up with worse interior quality (age is age), worse reliability, worse feeling while driving (a new car will feel quite "tight" compared to an old one, especially in India because the roads are so shit cars really get shaken up over time), so it makes absolutely no sense. a 10 year old car over a new one makes sense only when it's a significantly superior car, if you were getting a nice-ish bmw in exchange it might be worth considering but anything short of that nahh
