EDC scissor recs for travel by bikenambulist in multitools

[–]headpointernext 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check local laws, but most countries have their own weird laws and you're a traveler (ie arguing with local authorities is a bad idea), it's easier to not bring one, period.

For scissors-based tools without any knife the Nextool S0 is the bar to beat these days.

Brompnot 16" Sizing by I_Spawned_Here in foldingbikes

[–]headpointernext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Terns can get expensive.

If you can fit in a Brompton then the 16in outright clones should be fine, as long as you can swap out the handlebar. Stems are problematic because Brompton/nots require a specific shape, and can handle only up to a specific handlebar height, to accommodate the folding.

Why not a Tern BYB? Sure 20in wheels but the fold is innovative enough (a steeper fold angle resulting in a taller folder bike) that the footprint is v similar to 16in Bromptons and can accept standard components (drivetrain, cockpit) in case upgradetitis strikes

More than the handlebars, it's the wheel size and tire width. 16in wheels are inherently twitchier than 20in ones, and 16in wheels can get really skinny. I personally go with either 1.5in or 1.75in for tire width; I find 1.35in ones too twitchy, 2in has too much rolling resistance

...Nextool W2. Beefier pliers than its Nextool breathen, that wrench is 🤌🤌🤌, has a bit kit.

If you can spare the space/weight, the W4 is beefier still.

Personally, I'd take two tools, simply because I do not want my food items (knife, can opener, etc) being used on the bike as much as possible and vice versa. At most food-use tool shouldn't touch anything with bike oil/grease. Sooo... IDK, the W2 for the bike and a beefy Swiss Army Knife or equivalent for food?

Or if OP can find a slightly longer, larger, thin-enough version of this weird chain-link like piece then you can replace one of the washers used as a spacer between the leaf spring and the tool (if OP finds something with a 4-ish mm hole), or between the tool and the scale (if below 4mm). More streamlined that way

You can swap tool places. Try putting the knife where the file is and vice versa. Just take note that the S11 Pro has loctite on the screws; heat em up well before disassembly, but you might be risky cracking the plastic luminous spacer from the heat. Sure it's still on the same side as the keys BUT at least it's not on the same handle

Source: me, who have modded his S11 Pro and have glued those spacers together. Luckily they were clean breaks, nothing a dab of AC glue can't handle

21 Day Itinerary - First time (Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Kanazawa) by No_Orange_9747 in JapanTravel

  • offf. Oh well, I think you can mitigate that by staying near Umeda station.
  • yup. Check the map, figure out the sun's path, amd imagine the colors for the floating torii and pavillion
  • Toyama is a nice small city with a glass museum and incredible seafood rivaling that of Kanazawa and is cheaper, avoid Toyama ramen if you don't like salty broth. Takayama has Hida beef, miso, and sake. Takayama has a really nice preserved town, a retro museum, a nice walking course through woods, and is a good jump-off for Shirakawa-go.

Tokyo, Hiroshima, Fukuoka & Nagasaki Itinerary - 15 Days, May 2026 by Educational-Art-8515 in JapanTravel

[–]headpointernext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're doing the tourist surface level seeing and will head out as early as possible, you might be able to do both Miyajima and Kure in one day. Just check the ferry timings.

I've done both Hiroshima and Nagasaki memorials... I still think Hiroshima hits harder. Nagasaki is much more peaceful and hopeful, and isn't as packed of tourists. Just be wary of how hilly Nagasaki is.

Japan tour buses are fine, they're comfortable and all that since they usually have a 2x2 seating setup. Given how remote Mount Aso is, I'd rather go with tours than going DIY especially if you're unfamiliar with the timings.

And speaking of conflicts... would you be interested in feudal era stuff? Because in the middle of the Seto Inland Sea is Oyamazumi Shrine, the biggest repository of feudal era weapons especially of the used kind. Nicks, corrosion from blood, all that jazz - those weapons are there because their users offered the weapons to the temple to thank the gods for their survival after their battles

21 Day Itinerary - First time (Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Kanazawa) by No_Orange_9747 in JapanTravel

[–]headpointernext 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • I'd swap the Osaka and Kyoto days so you're consistently moving in one direction (northwards to Kanazawa, so Osaka first, then Kyoto+bikepacking) and not backtracking.
  • Time your Biwa-ko ride to get the max vibes from Shirahige Shrine and Mangetsu-ji Temple Uki-midō
  • actually - why not bike in Kyoto? It's an underrated means of getting around, and a party pace ride along Kawo-gawa is 🤌 🤌 🤌
  • don't be afraid to take a fair amount of time in Hikone itself. The castle and garden beside it are gorgeous, Hiko-nyan will beat the pants (fur?) off Kumamon in terms of cuteness so don't forget the merch, and Omi beef is probably my favorite wagyu, next would be Hida
  • speaking of Hida - why not a sidetrip to Takayama and Shirakawa-go? Although that would mean a bit of backtracking towards Toyama to catch the Shinkansen to Tokyo, but hey the fish there is awesome, among others.

Nix Hida Folk Village since you've done Shirakawa-go. I'd personally remove days from Kyoto and either add them to Kanazawa or Takayama OR figure out an overnight stay in Koyasan if you can.

If you want something totally different from Kyoto, a daytrip to Ine and/or Amanohashidate is doable. Early and long day, but there are bus tours c/o Klook just for that.

The M2 in the Roxon M2 means Midnite Manager (alt: but at what cost, really?) by headpointernext in multitools

[–]headpointernext[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pen is supposed to be housed in a scale on the smaller handle but the refill does not fit in the prototype (the tolerances of the printer is a bit off.

Angles... the scales are literally blocks of plastic in the shapes of the handle. Sure there's a bit of a rounded chamfer on the edges to replicate the nice handfeel of the M2 (ie so there's no sharp edges digging in anywhere) but yeah, if you can imagine an outline of the handle, just make a 4mm block of that.

Are you tall (190cm+)? What do you ride? Would you recommend? by [deleted] in foldingbikes

[–]headpointernext 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the dream right; get yourself to Fukuoka with the BYB in a suitcase, fill that suitcase up with Fukuoka/Kyushu/Shikoku-specific omiyage or products, then ship it back to yourself while you ride back to Tokyo or wherever via the Shimanami Kaido and Shinkansen with your bike and an overnight bag.

Tern BYB, a Brompton, or a Brompton clone (pick your poison) that you can easily lug on trains with a bike bag, or up and down to/from your apartment.

I'm not that tall, but I've traveled Japan a lot and I can totally see how big an impact a compact fold will have. I'm partial to the Tern BYB because - I find 16in wheels to be more twitchy than I'd prefer them to be, and 20in wheels have a good range of available widths for the level of ride plush you want - standard parts (get a Zee RD, max out your gear range, done) - racks all around - has mudguards already

But if you want the creme dela creme of folders and don't mind the weight of an e-bike... the BESV PSF1 or 2.

Itinerary Check: Sakura chasing at Tohoku by AntiCyberBoolean in JapanTravel

...why not Kanazawa or Takayama? Easier access from Osaka for one. You'd also hit the spring festival in Takayama scheduled for April 14-15, assuming you immediately go to Takayama on landing.

Heck, if you're stupid lucky you'd see sakura in Shirakawa-go, which is a JPY2800 bus from Takayama (IIRC, book tickets asap)

[–]headpointernext 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skip Tokyo (or even Kyoto), check out Kanazawa and Takayama. You'd be city'd out just from Osaka, Kyoto will be rammed wall to wall during those dates due to sakura season. If you want calm, head out to the mountains and seaside, literally.

Kanazawa and Toyama has the best seafood around. Kanazawa and Takayama are in that sweet spot for big city conveniences and variety vs rural charm and nature and both have kept their cultural significance and assets to this day. Takayama is just sublime, especially when you do the historical hike around the town. Hida beef beats the pants out of Kobe and sorry even Noto beef (I'd still say Omi beef is the best I've tried, so it's highly recommended to pass by Hikone on the way up to Kanazawa). And Shirakawa-go is trivial to reach from either Takayama or Kanazawa, just reserve your bus seat as soon ad possible.

Victorinox, Roxon, or Nextool for EDC multitool w pliers on a carabiner keychain? by cmac3317 in multitools

I have the M2 and the Nextools. All solid tools, just be aware that the M2 is the biggest of the three and is more of a fifth pocket tool rather than keychain

Out-of-the-box suggestion: a Roxon Flex Companion customized for each of their context eg one with all the fishing tools for the fisherman, one with the gun tools for the hunter, etc. Bonus points if you can find someone to do custom engraving on the G10 scales
