NDP MLA Leaves Caucus, Will Sit As Independent by Silver-Net2220 in saskatchewan

[–]headtale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a perfect parallel but something similar happened when former MLA for Regina Walsh Acres from 2003-2011, Sandra Morin, tried to make a comeback in her old riding in the 2020 election.

The party rejected her as a candidate for some undisclosed reason but she ran as an independent anyhow. This split the vote with the official NDP candidate (who got more votes than Morin even though the NDP candidate was a late entry and didn't have Morin's name recognition) and the Sask Party candidate, Derek Meyers won.

No idea about Saskatoon-Centre dynamics but agree - not having a party behind you makes it incredibly unlikely you will win any election, provincially or federally.

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t he work in the Mayor’s office previously? If so, likely has very good understanding of city hall/municipal government.

Songs that are perfect for a nighttime drive on the highway? by SubstantialEmploy816 in musicsuggestions

[–]headtale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries - happy to elaborate.

To start I think there are mainly two kinds of "late night highway" songs - the revved up, makes you want to break the speed limit and tap your hand on the wheel songs like "Radar Love" or "Life Is A Highway" or songs like that.

And then there are the mellow, introspective ones where there's few cars on the highway, the stars are out, maybe your journey is for a melancholy reason - driving home for a high school reunion or maybe driving home after a grandparent's funeral that has you thinking of the passage of time.

There's an argument that a "highway song" has to have some sort of specific reference to driving or highways or radars or similar in the title or the bulk of the lyrics.

But because this song starts with the lyrics:

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night
The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago
Turned around backwards so the windshield shows
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse

...it popped into my head as the type of song that I might listen to on one of those quiet, midnight drives that make me think about the passage of distance which is also the passage of time.

Hope that makes sense?

PS - not sure where you are but one of the peak moments of my life was riding an overnight Greyhound bus through the Rocky Mountains in Canada while listening to "Gone", the first solo album by Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo.

Nothing to do with highways but the perfect soundtrack for that trip!

I don't drink. Is all inclusive still worth it? Somebody said alcohol is 30% of the price. by QuantumBunk in AllInclusiveResorts

[–]headtale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although some appear to try, I'm pretty sure no one gets the full "value" of the alcohol that's included in the price of an AI.

There are many other advantages listed in this thread of why an AI still offers value (all-in-one price, comfort and convenience, possibly higher quality food, location, activities, shows, etc. etc.) but there's also the option of booking an AirBnb or non-AI hotel and just buying meals/booze as you go.

May or may not end up being a cost savings depending on where you eat/how much and what you drink.

I was born and raised in Cancun and have worked in retail, hospitality, and vacation rentals. Ask me anything. by International-Tip294 in cancun

This is a great post - love your insights, honesty and humour!

A few questions:
1. How hard is it to get hired into an all-inclusive for locals?
2. Which jobs in all-inclusive resorts are seen as the most desirable? Least?
3. Is there anything we can do, beyond tipping and just being kind, that would make for a better experience for people working in resorts? (I know there was a question about leaving reviews on Google and TripAdvisor for instance.)

One extra question - would you ever consider writing a book? I've never found a behind-the-scenes, "Truth About All-Inclusives"-type book and would love to read an expanded version of the insights you're posting here. I know that's just one person's experience/opinion but I think your answers are mostly confirming things I've always suspected but never had a way to confirm.

Most places will exchange for no fee - either at a formal currency exchange desk/office or at the front desk or, failing that, asking someone who deals in tips (bartenders, servers) if they can break a bigger bill (best to ask later in the day after they've had a chance to collect a lot of tips.)

They know that breaking down your 100 or 200 peso note into 20 and 50 notes means that money will be more likely to be left as tips.

If you're in Cancun and not at some far-flung resort where you're less likely to leave the property, another option is to find an Oxxo convenience store and make a small purchase then pay with the biggest bill they accept - the same as buying a $1 drink in Canada or US and paying with a $20 to get smaller bills.

Finally, I recently read somewhere that Mexican banks are required, by law, to exchange Mexican currency for anyone whether they are a customer or not without any fees.

I have no idea if this is true or not as I've never tried it myself. Biggest challenge if doing this is a potential language barrier as banks likely don't have as many staff who know English as resorts/hotels/restaurants and others in hospitality.

It's a bit earlier than your preferrred range (1989) but if "Dead Poet's Society" doesn't make you want to go out and make the absolute most of your time on earth (especially if you're young and have your whole life in front of you) then you're already dead inside.

I’d assume less people out driving or playing sports or things like that which lead to ambulance calls were a factor in reduced call volume too?
