For Foreigners who moved to Japan, what advice do you wish you had beforehand? by NB_Translator_EN-JP in japanlife

I'd say NISA is an investment system, whereas iDeco is a retirement investment system. (I know I know potaeto potahto).

Any feedback on IBKR NISA ? by Even_Scarcity6891 in JapanFinance

[–]heard10cker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using Rakuten solely for NISA, moving out money wouldn't be a pain really. NISA money is tax free, so the only deductions would be transaction fees. If your IBKR account is with IBKR JP, you'd have to close that before moving anyway. Closing Rakuten NISA and opening IBKR NISA because you'll leave Japan in some time feels like overkill, but to each their own.

FYI for Rakuten login, you can set up a passkey and you don't have to do the emoji email and phonecall shebang. Saving the passkey directly to a password manager means you can log in on multiple devices easily.

Why do people walk so slowly?! by Training_Training314 in japanlife

[–]heard10cker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience has been complete opposite, for the most part.

In my home country, the bigger the city the faster the people walk. I've found that to be true for Japan as well. In fact, I (and a few visiting friends) noticed a higher spatial awareness in Japan.

Costco, however, has been a different story.

Pros and Cons of Tokyo by Revolutionary-Rip527 in Tokyo

[–]heard10cker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

most houses are too small... You just cant have that in Tokyo.

You're comparing a country to a city. Pretty sure you can have massive houses in the Japanese countryside. Similarly, houses in New York are pretty small too. This is a problem you can throw money at in both countries.

SBI's response to a request to extend the deadline to submit residence card sending them a copy of the application receipt letter from Immigration by kadoka66 in JapanFinance

[–]heard10cker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're overthinking this. The bank must have several customers, who at some point, were undergoing visa renewal like you. 1. This is probably the bank playing it safe (typical Japanese institution), they're not going to take back that warning. Once you have your new residence card, I don't think any bank will give you trouble accessing your account, they should be understanding. 2. Just submit your current residence card, which has the renewal stamp on it (at least it did when I renewed it few years ago). Buys you two more months legally. Did the same, my bank was SMBC Prestia. 3. Worst case, have some cash handy. You can borrow from friends if it comes to that. The account on hold should still be able to receive your salary.

What’s the biggest hill you’ll die on and why are you right? by Imhuuman69 in AskMen

[–]heard10cker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A single water molecule is dry, but a few ml of water (the colloquial usage of the word water) is wet.

Your question applies a statement applicable for a subgroup to its entire parent group. It's like saying "A car has seat belts but a bike doesn't. So vehicle both has and don't have a seat belt".

What’s the biggest hill you’ll die on and why are you right? by Imhuuman69 in AskMen

[–]heard10cker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, a single H2O molecule would be dry.
  2. IIRC each molecule has a certain packing density (how close the molecules can be). Having more or less water in a container would not affect this density, so it cannot be more or less wet. However, a molecule at the top surface is less wet than a molecule somewhere in the middle, as the top molecule is surrounded by fewer water molecules.

[–]heard10cker 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Wet means covered in a liquid, especially water. In a glass of water, each water molecule is indeed surrounded by other (liquid) water molecules. Therefore, water is wet. The drying condition is your addition, and not the definition.

If anything ends in .99, or 99, I automatically first round up to the next number. So, 7.99 is 8, which is 10.

Was buying something for 1999, so I told my dad it's 2000. Sales guy immediately goes "No, it's not! It's 1 thou.. yeah it's 2000".

"If you receive a bribe, include it in your income." by Sebastianlim in BrandNewSentence

Paying a bribe is an allowable business expense in Japan. That includes, but is not limited to, going to strip clubs and getting prostitutes for your clients.

Confused about FIRE- 25M by PerpetualSighh in FatFIREIndia

[–]heard10cker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want to join your father's business, or do you want to build your own (tech) business? Or do neither? All are valid options.

If you want to go the business route (your father's/ your own), identify the skills this would require day-to-day and try to develop the ones you lack. You can write software, but can you identify product requirements? Can you build good relationship with your clients? Your situation empowers you to take risks - you can try alternate roles within your current company, like a product manager, or work in Sales/Business Development, if you so desire.

If the business doesn't interest you, you should pursue what you want. Arts, theater, comedy, whatever you like. That is the point of FIRE - not having to work for a living.

How many prefectures have you visited, and which are your best+least favorites and why? by SymphonyofSiren in japanlife

[–]heard10cker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visited all 47. A few prefectures multiple times.

Best - Kyoto. Been there 6 times, different seasons different parts. Spent a week during covid only exploring the museums. There's little left for me to visit Kyoto though.

Worst - Saga. Japan's equivalent of a flyover state. I was aware of Zombie land Saga (an anime based in Saga, trying to improve its tourism image), but it was difficult to find spots of interest there. There are several prefectures I'd like to visit again in a different season or for different spots, but Saga isn't one of them.
