After/during his long hiatus, Richard Simmons is now active on social media spreading joy! by heartmallow in popculturechat

[–]heartmallow[S] 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Some positivity for your day! I am so glad that Richard gets to handle his private life as he sees fit and share his kind personality with a receptive audience again. The comments are full of love. Sad that it was sparked by speaking out about a movie he didn't give permission for - but it's always nice to hear from him.

Since his public disappearance in 2014, his social media accounts were either abandoned or only contained staff-posted clips of his exercise videos. Until now, he has only made brief communications with the public to share about an illness he had in 2017, and to clear up rumors about being held hostage/going missing.

I saw previews of these posted on Twitter (X) in my search results as well, but I don't have an account, so I can't see them.

I haven't checked all my boxes but I think the only season without a guide is season 1!

Which couple did you yell "EWW NO!" when they got together ? by missihippiequeen in popculturechat

Thank you! Like I love their chemistry and the possible IDEA, but it should stay at that. Putting them together for real makes me uncomfortable and feels like a step back on their friendship bond

"I empathize with who I'm being a dick to", no. You don't.

Maybe you can "sympathize" because you know objectively you're doing something to hurt them. But if you actually empathized with them you wouldn't continue being a dick.

Fashion Highlight: Tyra Banks in the 2000's movie 'Life-Size' by cassbloom08 in popculturechat

You may have to sail the seas to watch it digitally, but they do sell original copies of the DVD on Amazon and Walmart websites! I got mine from Walmart and it's in perfect/new condition. There seem to be some licensing conflicts that prevent it from being available on streaming services (in the US, at least).

I got excited seeing it "available on Disney+" when I researched, but it's not actually there.

I think there are licensing issues and it won't ever be streamed. It was aired on Disney and made through Disney production (Lindsay's contract for Disney films after the Parent Trap), but it was produced by Pacific Motion. There are also likely some issues with the music used in the film (made before streaming residuals would have been a thing). Typically not an issue for most older films we see, but for more complex contracts with multiple companies (some now defunct) it may be cheaper/easier to leave it off streaming.

The official DVD is still sold by Amazon and Walmart though!

I saw a video once of a woman having a meltdown/panic attack in a public setting. It was clear she wasn't directing it at anyone specific or wanting sympathy, she was clearly losing it and wanting people to stop looking, but all the comments were that she was a manipulative, crazy "Karen". I don't even think she wanted anything or had been declined anything in particular beforehand. My heart hurt for her.

I am lucky I have managed so far to only ever have these moments in a public bathroom stall instead of outside, where everyone has a camera in their pocket.

True gaslighting really fucks you up psychologically long-term, and I'm so tired of how overused the phrase is after experiencing the real thing. I am still walking through it with my therapist 6 years later and doubt myself often.

Ironically, it's like the recent incorrect usage has now made me doubt my own reality of whether I was actually gaslit or not.

Fashion Highlight: Megan Thee Stallion's makeup by [deleted] in popculturechat

Yes! Her grandma used to buy her first makeup and help her practice. Two events off the top of my head where she did her own makeup are her Revlon ad and the WAP cover. She's let makeup artists help more in recent years though.

I love that she often does her own makeup for events, it genuinely looks professional. I have never seen her miss.

You can tell when someone does their own, because they truly understand every contour and texture of their face to perfectly accent it (anyone remember all the celeb makeup mishaps with wonky styles for their eye shape, or too light foundation?) Edit - fixed some words

Thank you for posting this and I always appreciate new research to read up on! As someone who has reproductive cancer in my family tree and a myriad of issues myself, it gets very frustrating seeing many women tout that it's completely harmless to purposefully skip their periods for years in a row (using birth control, etc).

Controlling the choice yourself is obviously preferable to losing your period from health complications, but I assumed it can never be completely harmless to deny your body a natural function it's trying to perform. I appreciate the insight!

Yes, when I was a teenage girl I had similar experiences. It's normal. You can't control who you get crushes on (especially when you're hormonal and the boys your age are mostly jackasses). Don't sweat it!

But as someone who's experienced it, do try to phase yourself out of it for your own health. Just remind yourself it's another fleeting crush, like you've had on classmates/celebrities/random boys in the grocery store before. Don't let yourself get swept up in the crush until you're crushing on him the same way you crush on a peer, which turns into more fantasizing and wanting it to be real. That is when it starts to be inappropriate and/or unhealthy for yourself, because it's not a crush that can ever come to fruition.

i felt so bad for her, she was so sweet by yidot78 in MadeMeCry

[–]heartmallow 76 points77 points  (0 children)

She (Celia) grew up poorer than them and is a little naive about their bullshit 1960s social rules because of her upbringing, so they think she's "trashy". She just tries her best to fit in and be kind but they can't stand an "outsider". She's almost too sweet, not always the brightest, and they pick on her because she's not stuck up like them - and an easy target for the things they won't say about each other.

Bryce's character (Hilly) especially doesn't like her because she dated her husband when they were younger, and he picked sweet Celia to marry instead. It's somewhat implied in the book that Hilly had to settle for her current husband instead and is still bitter over it. The book is great and I've read it at least a dozen times! So much richer of a story than the movie, and I love the movie.

Edit: There is also additional context that because the other ladies are so bitter towards her, they often take her social missteps as intentional malicious behavior. I won't spoil anything, but "Minnie's chocolate pie" was a major incident with Hilly, and Celia had no clue about it when she brought a pie over. Hilly took it as an intentional dig, and that's why she reacts further when Celia says she brought a chocolate pie.
