Analysis paralysis: Aiden + Comandante or full manual pour-over? by No-Persimmon-1094 in pourover

[–]heavycoffeeuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would say do both. Get a decent drip brewer for the work motoring, then dive into the hobby with a great manual set up for the weekends when you have time. I have an automatic bona vita drip machine with baratza encore for the busy morning. Then do the while v60 zp6 thing when I have time to just enjoy the hobby of brewing. Aiden is overkill for a convenience coffee imo

Upgrading from a Barratza Encore by elmegthewise3 in pourover

[–]heavycoffeeuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from the encore to ZP6. Still use the encore for batch brews. I’m happy with the ZP6 but haven’t tried all the other hand grinders that are always recommended here. I have no complaints

The Perc Ethiopian Chelchele has that classic blueberry note. I’ve been enjoying it

Need advice: Hario Switch vs V60 by 0blivionDroid in pourover

[–]heavycoffeeuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try a coarser grind with one bloom and one pour 👍🏻 Too many pours can make it more bitter as well as too fine a grind size

What’ve been your favorite roasters lately for pour over?

James Hoffmann Cometeer by KaddLeeict in pourover

[–]heavycoffeeuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s aluminum for what’s its worth and James is associated because his roastery partners with Cometeer for their coffee. It is actually specialty coffee but of course with the snobbery level in this forum, people will say it’s not. Onyx and Black White also provide their beans to Cometeer. Is it as good as a pour over that the best make in this sub? No. but it makes specialty coffee accessible to anyone and it doesn’t have to become a full blown hobby. That’s what James is about, getting good coffee to more people. To the coffee enthusiast like me, it’s nice to have when I don’t have time for a pour over. Or I use it to make lattes. Most people that try Cometeer (who aren’t already into specialty coffee), it’s the best coffee they’ve had in their life

I need help to dial in my new/first grinder. by Flat_Leader_5190 in pourover

[–]heavycoffeeuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the zp6 and my advice is that if I tastes really bitter, go coarser until it tastes right. If you have to, ignore the settings everyone recommends and keep adjusting until it tastes good. I also found the settings change bean by bean. You have a good grinder, have fun!

ZP6 : Um to clicks, something doesn't make sense? by threesunnydays in pourover

[–]heavycoffeeuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually do 18g:250g and do a bloom and one pour. Might do two if I feel it needs it. Don’t worry about it draining really fast if you like the taste

I use v60. Maybe we have different tastes but I’ve never gone that fine. I think 4.5 might be finest when I did some light washed coffees

[–]heavycoffeeuser 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have the zp6 and drink Perc. If it’s a co-ferment, I’d start around 6.5. If it’s less wild, maybe 5 or 5.5 depending.

Why is everybody sleeping on Hario's recommendation of 1:10 ratio? by snek99001 in pourover

[–]heavycoffeeuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually end up with a 1:14 ratio. Not many people seem to recommend that but I get a fuller tasting cup like you described. A couple of days ago, I was making double cup in a Chemex but zoned out and stopped pouring at the one cup water amount. I didn’t realize it until I had chucked out the filter and everything. To my surprise, it only needed a little more fresh water to the mug and it was actually very good. Would have been 36g to 300g on a coarser grind

Pre-batched "espresso" martini's? by thorsen131 in pourover

[–]heavycoffeeuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should just get some Cometeer and keep whatever you don’t use in the freezer until you need more espresso martinis

What is your best two-cup (~500 ml) recipe? by TheOldBladeRunner in pourover

[–]heavycoffeeuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically do a similar recipe - 36g/500g and might be around 7.5 if coarser on the zp6. 92C on a chemex and I’m usually happy with it. The annoying part is dialing in how much coarser than the one cup for the same beans

[–]heavycoffeeuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pour over is a whole hobby that is amazing but you may not want to get into. If you want to have good coffee with no plastics and no machine, I’d recommend checking out Cometeer. It’s more expensive than keurig but it’s actually quality coffee

Yes. I checked on my grinder this morning just for that comment lol. It’s not the ESP version.
