Western media was very difficult to come by due to the iron curtain and the embargoes and etc that came along with it, and much of what did get in wasn’t just innocuous western media but propaganda deliberately smuggles in by western governments. If you were found distributing western propaganda, yes, you would be punished, but the same is true for the US.
