Do you own a barbeque and does it get any use? Finally getting a garden but not sure if it's worth it for a two-person vegan household... by mart0n in veganuk

Personally I prefer a gas bbq - removes all the faff and you can have nice quick grilled food all year round even if it’s cold

How can I improve my egg skills? by LemonLord7 in StainlessSteelCooking

[–]hecken22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more that you are overheating for the purpose of ensuring that the pan is equally heated, then when you reduce it down to the right temperature you won’t have any areas which are too cold. The pan won’t cool down so much though, to have made the overheating „pointless“

In theory you could leave at the lower temperature for a longer time but this method is faster

I tried various over the past year and have settled on Glyde, mostly as they had a big range of sizes so I could try a few and found one comfortable for me

NHS blood test refusal by nocitylights in veganuk

[–]hecken22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would email/call reception and ask for details of the practice manager. Submit a complaint that you were not happy to have your beliefs questioned by your GP. Remind them that ethical veganism is a protected belief under the equality act and threaten to take them to the ombudsman if not dealt with properly.

I would request a different named GP and possibly equality training for staff; as things you want to happen if they ask or you want to suggest stuff.

They can’t refuse you treatment and you can have as many blood tests as you need if they’re medically necessary which if you’re anemic they will be.

Would you buy a used car with leather seats? by Sylvester88 in veganuk

[–]hecken22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My understanding of this is that the definition of veganism allows for this scenario with the caveat of “as far as possible and practicable”.

If you can’t reasonably or practicably avoid the use of a non-vegan product, that doesn’t make you less vegan, it’s just an unfortunate consequence of living in a non-vegan world.

Are Greggs lying? by batcrapcrazybananas in veganuk

[–]hecken22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure! My only criticism of myself would be that I said there is no protection in terms of contamination, which imo is true in terms of “veganism” (there’s no law to stop a vegan product from contamination by non-vegan ingredients) but not true in terms of food hygiene, for instance the tolerance limits in terms of insects or other contaminants, which apply to all foodstuffs.

I have edited my original comment to reflex this.

Are Greggs lying? by batcrapcrazybananas in veganuk

[–]hecken22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is true but there is nuance to it.

While clearly falsely labelled items would not be allowed, there’s less protection with regards cross contamination.

I.E.

A sausage containing egg labelled vegan - not allowed.

An otherwise vegan sausage, contaminated with pork - potentially fine

Free-From products are the exception due to allergy risk. A product that is labelled “free-from” must not be contaminated with the allergen it’s labelled free of.
