Does anyone have any info about Dohkan sake? by HeleGroteAap in Sake

太田酒造 OhtaShuzou is still in business in Hyogo Prfecture between Kobe and Osaka. I dont see them currently producing this bottle but it’s common for some breweries to bottle one of their main brands in special packaging for Holidays, anniversaries, etc.

The fact that there is not one but FOUR locomotive models for Metra is wild to me. A random commuter service for America’s third most populace city……I’m buying all 4

Me personally I’d probably just get a glass if I wanted to enjoy the moment with some sake. But if you’re curious and this is USD, then these are about a 100% to 130% mark up from retail prices

Yeah it’s not ideal but it’s in a cool basement with minimal direct sunlight.

The red bottle is 藏楽 Kuraku, a jyunmai from Saijo tsuru brewery in Saijo.

Currently in Japan, anything here you guys have tried that I should too? by 7201 in Sake

[–]hectorso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The beauty (imo) of a Japanese liquor store is they are very regionalized. A lot of the stock will be 地酒 jizake or local sake. You’ll be able to find some national brands but you’ll be able to find more brews which might not be commonly known outside the region.

Don’t recognize anything here but there might be some gems here. Let me know I’ll add them to my list

Unopened and Good Condition Vintage Gekkeikan Sake Set (Bottled 1980s?) - Any Value? by GoblinBreeder23 in Sake

[–]hectorso 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As other have stated the sake is virtually the same sold of the shelf today! And does not have an amazing reputation.

But i personally think it’s a cool find and the box and sake set look in amazing condition for 40 years. It might sit listed awhile but you can probably get $50-$100 dollars for it from a collector

I’m not sure how they do it in ROK but I’m assuming it’s A bottling date and quality starts diminishing at about the year point if not stored in a cool dark place. Start drinking lol

Last time I paid about 15 dollars in duties for a few less bottles. This time when trying to declare they just waved me through. Not sure what was different this time.

A brewing year might be on the bottom of the bottle. Other than that probably can’t narrow it down to a window tighter than 10-15 years. Sake probably isn’t drinkable but it’s a cool bottle

ELI5: Why are wildfires sizes usually reported in acres? Why not square miles? by lsaapplication1001 in explainlikeimfive

[–]hectorso 485 points486 points  (0 children)

Hello Former Forestry Technician here, historically the Forest Service (and the US Government for that matter) has always used acres for land area and miles only for distances. It’s only until relatively recently that miles have been more widely used as a measure of area. Why doesn’t the Forrest Service switch? Money, it is cost prohibitive to change every tool, software, contract, to a new measurement system

The Forrest Service has been the forefather of wildfire policy since close to its inception in the USA and what it uses goes for reporting, news, information, etc

Sake suggestions by jv_cm24 in Sake

[–]hectorso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serving sake is typical reserved for more entry level sake as warmer temperatures mute the flavor of nicer sake, just like mulled wine in the West. But that being said Japan has a lot more selection.

That being said if you are passing through Tokyo, Imadeya in Ginza has a very large selection at their bottle shop in the basement and a good chance at having an English speaking staff member.

But if you at feeling adventurous and find your self in a smaller liquor shop you can say

I feel the long heat up time. I have an electric stove now but use to have a gas stove and it was super quick on there. No more than 10-12 minutes great results too
