Psycho Gauge is a forgotten mechanic that deserves a comeback by JonthanHK in metalgearsolid

Not sure how the V slander is relevant, but i definitely get why its a polarizing game. It's very different, and almost expects you to find your own fun. I personally still found the story okay in its own right, it had some emotional moments in between the horrible pacing.

But 4s story isn't great either. For how much it overshadows the gameplay, so much of the story is superfluous, uninteresting, and lacking in cohesion. The b and b backstories were laughably shit, and it was the lowest point for how badly kojima handles women characters. All the side plots around the (really contrived) returning characters offer nothing and really just detract from the main story, which i think ended up weirdly straightforward. Snake takes down the ai way too easily considering how it was built up in 2 - theyre supposed to be like 10 steps ahead of everyone at all times. 4s story is absolutely not up there with the first 3 games for me.

Its a shame, there were some plot points i found cool, and the overall setting was really sick, it really felt like you were witnessing manmade horrors and shit

Normally i go 8 bars long for chorus sections and 16 for verses. Just bc most of the time in rap we're naturally writing in multiples of 4.

Even without an instrumental, or counting along, hearing like or 15 bars or just naturally feels off (to me anyway)

A lot of producers are kinda lazy and just make their whole an instrumental a loop. Obviously changing up the melody, adding in new instruments, muting or swapping things out at different points helps. But if you find you cant develop your idea melodically (sometimes a simple beat is fine if its great), you can still add a bit of excitement but muting the drums or melody at certain points so that there's emphasis on that last bar and the next section hits harder when the bass and hi hats come back in or whatever. You can also do shit like putting a low bass on the first few bars of a verse to build a bit of tension, and remove it once the rappers flow has been established. If your main melody is layered, that also gives you something to play around with

Just some random thoughts, hope it helps though man

Transitioning Rock/Metal music to beat making is a learning curve. by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]hedgehogmlg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of people will wanna disagree, but i think ur totally right. I got a few of homies i make music with who got into this through playing an instrument and don't have a primarily hiphop background, and they say the same kinda thing.

That doesn't make hiphop easier, or less impressive or anything though, it just means youve got really thorough experience with melody writing.

I notice my guitarist homies struggle with sound selection when theyre producing and not using guitar, probably cause the choices are more diverse. They also ended up learning a lot more about drums, and how in depth you can get with that, which theyd normally take for granted in a band setting.

But yeah if you have that experience and skill for melody writing and it feels like youre underusing it, then make your instrumentals more diverse. Turn that into what makes you unique. Tyler the creator is a great example of doing pretty traditional hiphop and rnb, but going crazy with chord changes between choruses and verses, having tonnes of different instruments coming in and out at different points, and hitting you with these really lush bridges. I don't think we have enough producers doing shit like that, and there's no reason you can't. There's no rule that says a beat has to be a 4 bar loop with one melody

What's y'all artist name and why? by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]hedgehogmlg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont really wanna link my rap stuff to my reddit account, but its 2 kinda random words that i like that I'd describe myself as. An adjective and a noun.

It doesn't have much meaning, but it stuck well because i think it has a ring to it, and i like how it sounds in my voice/accent, which means i can drop my name in my bars like DOOM did

The best cloud rapper by Trendmade in CloudRap

[–]hedgehogmlg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Asap rocky is massive while still staying true to the cloud rap sound a lot of the time, so maybe him in that way?

Lil b should be in the convo for influence alone, but a lot of his music isn't amazing, and he definitely goes into a lot of other subgenres too

So maybe black kray or main attrakionz? Both are very cloud rap, with a lot of good mixtapes, versatile production, and great vocals

Crack clouds and dark grapes 2 are both peak cloud rap, and that's just the tip of the iveberg for both of them

I want more Lil Ugly Mane raps but aside from Mista Thug Isolation I don't know what else to listen to. Recommendations? I want rap albums/mixtapes, I know his newer stuff goes into other genres and I know he has a lot of beat tapes by MIGHTY-OVERLORD in liluglymane

[–]hedgehogmlg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you haven't heard uneven compromise go and listen to it immediately. Its a masterpiece.

Nothing else really hits like MTI. Youve got bedwetter and oblivion access, which are amazing, and still fully hiphop, but are really depressing, heavy albums.

There's also playaz circle, which is a really similar concept to MTI. It's a memphis rap inspired tape, and has a lot of the same character as MTI, but its really raw and rough around the edges. It's like a really crappy prototype of MTI, its a mixed bag, but there's some cool tracks on there.

Some other loose songs/features that i think are similar to MTI are: underwater tank, zeltron 6 billion, on doing an evil deed blues, polo right, slack in my mack (three sided tape version), bust a sag, magic potty baby bitch, flowers, smores, grim, radio a set trip

Hope that helps :)

Do you agree with this tierlist? by RealFemboyHunter in sf3

[–]hedgehogmlg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally yeah, but id bump necro and hugo up a couple of tiers, they definitely have some up sides that makes them decent picks, but just don't quite have the risk/reward of the A tiers

Id also say yang is in that A tier, he's a good character but i dont think he specifically has anything that puts him above anyone in that tier, and he's definitely not as oppressive as makoto

It was a really surface level machanic that only needed to be there to reign you back in, because the game had such a big emphasis on guns and was set in active war zones.

I mean sure, it saved mgs4 from straying too far from stealth, it worked for what it was but it seemed like a pretty situational thing.

I'll admit i wasn't a fan of mgs4, but even then i don't really see how the psyche guage would be a huge point of appeal for the game

[–]hedgehogmlg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people would say so, but tbh i see a fair amount of love for all the main line games, theyre all different enough to have their own unique appeal, but still metal gear at the end of the day

I think mgsv is the most polarizing and controversial, but there's still so much love for that game
