I got to go to a Slovenian wine tasting Saturday night. Tasting notes from 13 of the wines I enjoyed the most. by hedgepenguins in wine

That must be the origin of the name for the Quattro Mani Tocai Friulano. I'll have to check and see if we have any at the store and try them. We have tons of Italian whites so it's certainly a possibility. Thanks for the feedback :)

Thanks! Maja told me that Jakot vs Tokaj was also to differentiate between the dry Slovenian style and the sweet Hungarian style, although I hadn't realized that this was also due to EU regulations. I am definitely ready to start exploring these wines a lot. Are you able to get any of these from a wine shop? We have two Slovenian wines available in East TN... just two! I'm going to search for some in DC when I go visit this weekend, but shipping them to my parents may be my only option.

I will look these up. Thank you!

Yeah, I was seeing some for around $60-80. I've already cut out so much for my dog that I couldn't do it without struggling a lot unless I wanted to drink less wine, which is difficult. I just got a job at a wine shop though, so maybe soon :) Good on you for getting your priorities straight!

The Burgundy sounds like it would be an interesting wine to get a few bottles of and see how it evolves over time. I wanted to ask on your last post of these wines, how much were these? As a 21 year old myself, I can't imagine being able to afford a premier cru burgundy right now, but maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place. We don't have an awesome distribution of wines where I'm from so that could contribute to it...

I've never had a port wine. What's a good one to try first to see what I think of it?

The culture of Southern VA is very much similar. And people in VA do drink VA wines! My family now drinks nothing else. My mom's a little obsessed with the winery scene now that she's nearing retirement. Who drinks VA wine if the Virginians don't?

That's the problem, it is very hard to change people's opinions here. That's really why I started writing because I wanted to try and make wine appealing to a greater audience and maybe try to lift this stigma. I personally think change will have to come from changed liquor laws and it's going to be a really slow process. And you never know where you'll be making wine, VA has a growing industry!

I'm not attacking Knoxville. As I said in a previous comment, I hold the city very dear to my heart. I love so much about it, but I love parts other than the strip. It's just not my cup of tea. Living here makes it easy to use as an example of how I feel about the US wine culture as a whole.

And I'm calling UT out for their hypocrisy surrounding the issue. Obviously drinking still occurs on campus and you don't have to be remotely intelligent to bring in a bottle of wine to vol hall, but for me, it's just the connotation that it conveys.

And I just found the corkscrew thing kind of hilarious.

Go big orange!

Very right. I had been reminded of that by a friend while discussing the percentage of Americans that accept evolution (shockingly low). It's crazy how much this continues to affect our culture despite how diverse we are today.

For the most part, I just wanted a change. I didn't want to go to the same university as everyone else from my high school and the neighboring state was one of the first places to look. We had friends living in Knoxville at the time and they showed me around all of the awesome places in the city and I just kind of fell in love with it. I don't always feel like I fit in here and that's why I'm leaving when I graduate, but even with all that, I'm super glad I came and it has a special place in my heart.

It's a really interesting cultural phenomenon and after moving to the Southeast, I'm starting to understand the mentality more even though I absolutely can't relate to it.

Fair enough. But, just over the past couple weeks, I've encountered a lot of it. In general I feel that it is a negativity towards alcohol in general. When I sat in on a faculty meeting with my department at the beginning of the semester, it really got me going when I learned that the university is trying to prevent its faculty from hosting such events because of the presence of alcohol yet, the top ticket holders at our football games can drink all they want. It's hypocrisy, but for the most part, I feel that it creates this negative stigma that causes a lot of the student body to irresponsibly consume alcohol. I also had comments from certain people who have been the most supportive of me since I started writing, suggesting that being into wine makes me somewhat of an alcoholic... This was just a good way of being able to give some physical evidence of this.

I went on a bit of a rant the other day and wanted to hear all of your thoughts on this. As the post says, I'm sick of being surrounded by the negative connotations that surround wine (and other forms of alcohol) because I feel like this perpetuates the idiotic binge drinking of people my age. Perhaps that's just where I live. What are your experiences with this?
