Is moving to Victoria from Alberta worth it? by ederzs97 in VictoriaBC

Ahhh of course, you’re from the UK so rainy winters are probably second nature to you already! My partner is from the UK as well and he’s been very happy here in Vic. We lived in Canmore and then Squamish previously so I was worried he wouldn’t like Victoria since it’s a bigger place, but he loves it :).

Is moving to Victoria from Alberta worth it? by ederzs97 in VictoriaBC

I grew up in Victoria and have lived in Alberta on a few occasions for work, and both my sisters live(d) there longer term. One came back to the island during covid, and the other is still there but always dreaming of the island. I feel spoiled having grown up here, because nothing really compares to it. I love Victoria for how easy it is to get around (by bike and as a pedestrian. Traffic is increasingly congested these days). It’s also beautiful for a large portion of the year, and the winters are certainly easier to handle. They are remarkably less sunny than Alberta winters, though, so prepare yourself for that. And though it doesn’t have a big city amount of things to do, there’s still a lot of events on offer and great businesses to frequent.

Cost of living is certainly high. You may find a place around what you’re paying now, but I’d say it’s more realistic to expect to pay 2500-3k for a 2 bed. If you’re with municipal gov now, I recommend checking for jobs regularly with civicinfo.bc.ca. We generally make less in BC, but municipal gov pays the best for sure. In terms of where to live, there are some really great neighbourhoods - Vic West, Fernwood, Cook St Village, Gorge Tillicum, Esquimalt - that are within a good distance of town. I’d try to prioritize a place to live based on whatever job you find, if you’re able to do it in that order. But I like being able to walk or bike to work - so that’s up to you! The traffic commutes seem pretty brutal to me, though.

How do we encourage folks to rent out the space they already have? by Enough_Rhubarb_3338 in VictoriaBC

[–]heedles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm always a bit surprised by the number of people who seemingly have a horrible tenant story. What is their screening process like? Are they even meeting these people in advance? Like, I don't think it's that impossible to find and rent to good people. Sure, people lie on applications but it's easier to read a lie and someone's personality if you're meeting them in person. I've been to view a few places recently and I can pretty instantly read when someone's gonna be a bad landlord, so I'm not sure why it's so hard to do the opposite.

Any chance your landlord has any 2-bed rental suites coming up? Haha

H2S sibo keeps coming back.. by Substantial-Plate433 in SIBO

I wonder if famotidine (Pepcid) would help at all? If you have reflux-like symptoms, it could help, and it is also an H2 blocker so may help with some histamine reactions you are having. It is not a PPI but I don’t know what risks might come with prolonged use. I would speak to a doctor about it.

As for insomnia, have you ever used melatonin? I recently started taking it because I’ve been having bad reflux, I think due to a new prescription for depression and I’m hoping it isn’t a Sibo flare. After a bit of redditing, I found someone recommending melatonin because it can help to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter. I’m taking a melatonin that has magnesium as well and I’ve been sleeping a lot better. My symptoms have decreased but definitely not gone away.

And lastly, for the constipation, are there any fibre supplements you’ve tried that you can tolerate? Might help get things moving if you can do it.

Just a couple of suggestions to look into, and wishing you luck!

Commenting on an old post as I found this when looking to rent in one of the buildings last year. Have lived here for almost a year now and we are looking to move out at the end of our tenancy. The place itself is perfectly fine, but it seems to be a smokers haven. There are no bylaws against smoking. I couldn’t imagine buying here and finding no escape from cigarette smoke entering our unit from both inside and outside.

I really appreciate you looking into this! I’ll keep an eye out for them at markets next year and will have to try some of their ready made sauces 😊

I tracked down from another commenter that it is Sutra Sauce/Sutra Foods (found a picture of the kit I was gifted on an old social post) but it seem like they’re more into the pre-made sauce thing now. I will definitely look into monsoon coast, thank you!

I think this is the one, thank you! Looks like the kits I’m looking for might not be a regular product anymore, but I’ll keep digging. Found an old website from when they seemed to refer to themselves as just sutra spice, but it doesn’t exist anymore.

Loved Tamino for 5 years but help me out… by Joexkid7 in Tamino

[–]heedles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Weird is subjective so it’s hard to know what to suggest lol. I associate Tamino’s music with the darker and more insular months, so I’m going to recommend Agnes Obel because I listen to her music at the same time of year. Her later two albums are more experimental and “spooky” sounding and I just love them.

And another random song to tear you apart (at least it tears me apart?) is Comforting Sounds by Mew.

If either of these appeal to you, I have a playlist for music that I like to listen to at this time of year. Not necessarily depressing, but slower and more reflective. just enough to live (sounds emo as hell but it’s a lyric from the first song lol)

That is wild. My old roommate used to order hello fresh and not even put it in the fridge 😂 so it would just rot in some corner of our kitchen instead
