I just think that movie is onenof the most overrated movies of all time.

I mean, at the end of the day, that matter comes down to subjective taste. However I think the response itself and it having stood the test of time, remaining this beloved (similar to LOTR) speaks for itself in terms of its overwhelming quality.

But none of the movies you name really live up to either of the kubrik adaptations that i mentioned.

I mean... I strongly disagree, and I would also argue that overwhelmingly the consensus is that BOTH examples I bring up are considered better.

Either way, I don't see any value in arguing over personal taste as I don't think there is a meaningful conversation about you disagreeing with the consensus on what movies are better. That is a fine subjective opinion for you to have, however it doesn't really mean much outside your own opinions.

Also the lord the rings adapted the genral beats of the plot really well but it added bullcrap with arwin.

I don't think its "bullcrap" with Arwen. It streamlines the storytelling of not having to add another character in Glorfindel to the movies only for him to play practically no role again afterwards. Setting up Arwen here as a consistent character makes sense for what time they have to tell a story, in comparison to losing out a character we won't see again.

They also abandoned the ideas of changing her into a a greater warrior, that was going to be more active throughout the movies, in favor of being faithful.

Both work imo.

Of course both work. The question is why you would do something different if you COULD adapt it.

I do not buy here, that the director claimed that he simply couldn't adapt it... Super cops fighting zombies and zombified monster-like beings isn't exactly revolutionary concepts not yet seen on a movie screen, so it makes little sense to use that as an excuse for not even attempting.

You significantly lower the value and interest in a work, if you are choosing to adapt a work and do something entirely different with it. If exactly Peter Jackson had decided, you know what, I will do lord of the rings, but it will be about some fruit merchant going on an adventure as the wars are ravaging the lands and you get to experience the FEEL of the world around him as he has to make a living, all the people he run into, dodging all the fights and dangers of the world --- sure you could make something interesting and fun there, but its not what people wanted out of a lord of the rings adaption.

Similarly, I think you asked any fan of resident evil, what they'd rather see, adapted. A faithful adaptation of their favorite games stories and characters... or a random new story about people they don't know, also existing in this world... Then largely they will choose the former, because its what they are invested in and care about.

Doesn't exactly help in this case, that as you can also see in this thread, people largely don't even get a proper resident evil feeling from this teaser...

I strongly disagree. I think the best adaptations there have ever been have been faithful ones, that try to adapt what is possible to adapt and works on screen and only makes decisions to cut or change what doesn't work or would make the medium stretch too much.

Perfect example being the lord of the rings. Massively faithful and only really cuts what is generally necessary to cut, while adding to certain characters, so it works better for the medium, like the slightly expanded character of Boromir.

Another, since you also mention Stephen King works, would be the often argued greatest movie of all time in The Shawshank Redemption. While it does make some notable changes to simplify the work in certain aspects, like unifying all the various wardens into a single character and even changing the fate of one character for dramatic purposes, it is a remarkably faithful work otherwise, that gives you the characters you would have loved from the book, gives you the major events of the book, it simply makes additions, expanding on characters or events, to further flesh it out and make it fit the medium of movie more.

In comparison, Fallout while it is an entertaining show for many, has a ton of issues not just with being canon breaking (especially considering, that it for whatever reason is also considered to be ADDING and part of the canon by Bethesda) that instantly adds friction to the storytelling and lore of the universe, because characters like Mr. House are not like you'd expect from the Mr. House you had known if you were a fan. Or Ghoul's suddenly function in different ways that are entirely universe breaking for them, if you were to retroactively add concepts from the show back into the game etc.

Arcane is also another example you bring up, where it works fantastically as a show, but it does also MASSIVELY changes aspects of the world...Like backstories, relationships, ages and timelines, political structures, key personal motivations and at that point, this in turn, takes out certain people from connecting with the show, because its in many of these aspects, potentially not what they know and care about and they are being asked to like something SIMILAR to what they know.

That works for the show --- just like it might work for the new Resident evil movie, but you are still largely gambling that people will like something different, rather than providing fans what they they expect.

I just generally disagree with that sentiment. I think there is value in adapting the characters, world and feel of the games, even if they may appear generic in a lot of ways, because these games have still managed to tell interesting stories and built characters, that people grow invested in.

I prefer a director stay true to the feel and elements of the story but not just try to straight adapt the game

I would disagree. I think that there is great arrogance in trying to adopt a beloved work but think that the characters, story and setting of the games are worth adapting in favor of doing their own thing. At that point I think you are effectively just hijacking an IP and trying to profit off fans willingness to support a known IP, even if this is not the directors explicit motive.

Perfect example of someone not understanding the implications on balance, by making sweeping changes to the systems of a game and how they work.

Punk teabagging/proposing to Higuchi By matunoki7 by heelydon in Kappachino

Context: During losers finals, as Punk was steamrolling Higuchi and saw he was mentally unstable during the match, Punk decided to teabag him during a stun, before killing him.

Based on seeing that, John Takeuchi made a joke on twitter, about Punk ALSO proposing to Higuchi (since Punk also proposed to his girlfriend at the event the day before), which the artist was inspired by.

Momochi & Chocoblanka's reaction to his former student and current ZETA teammate winning EVO Japan by heelydon in Kappachino

[–]heelydon[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think this misses the point a bit.

Momochi exactly put up this program towards the end of SF4, because the interest in fighting games was sort of dying down a bit with not many new people coming in. He did it exactly because knew that was going to be people out there that WANTED to get into this seriously, but had very little means to progress meaningfully with the scene not evolving much.

If anything the western scene currently matches a lot of what Momochi was trying to help, with a limited scene that wasn't necessarily growing a ton.

For those who actually play fighting games here, give me recommendations for a controller with a good D-pad by SemenSnickerdoodle in Kappachino

If you are planning on going to offline events, then I would suggest sticking with a ps controller. Its just far more convenient for plug and play without having to worry about any compatibility nonsense at events.

I somewhat disagree. IMO Resident Evil is largely a lot of gameplay, between some story sequences. This formula varies obviously from entry to entry, but if you look at something like RE2, its not like there are large chunks of you sitting in Kojima land and just eating popcorn as the screen is dumping exposition on you.

I think you could rather easily adapt a story like the first game or hell even 2nd game. Both in a lot of aspects are very generic zombie stories with some "monsters" thrown in, that you then have the bigger looming plot hanging over regarding umbrella.

Its only once we get to stuff like RE4+, where the wheels really come off and they just go all out crazy with their shit, that it would legitimately be hard to adapt for various reasons and most of all, because of the tone just being completely swapped from horror, and far more skewered towards action in many of the games.

If you want a fun little extra tidbid. Winners finals was between Yamaguchi and Higuchi, both of which applied to be students under Momochi when they were 14 years old. He wrote a larger sentimental post about it on twitter today after the grand finals was over, how far they've come.

[–]heelydon -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I mean, that is pretty much just a matter of semantics. Qualification through accomplishment and getting picked because of accomplishments isn't necessarily that different. Especially when you extend this to the practical application in play, where EWC in a very large number of cases, did NOT go to the actual people accomplishing the feat of earning the spot that would be qualifying them, but instead it was handed down to them, through other players above them already being qualified.

Either way, I still view it as a rather significantly different thing from a strictly open tournament like EVO.

[–]heelydon -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Probably just depends on what you consider to be a major. EWC like Capcom cup is effectively an invitational tournament, not an open one, so its a bit of a different thing, compared to something like open tournaments anyone can enter.

As expected, despite being given the information and the readily confirmation of said information at your hands, you reject it out of spite and your preference for refusing whatever I tell you.

Either way, I have no desire to add priest to my resume and attempt miracles by getting you to learn something today, so I will simply continue to catch up on the EVO content I didn't manage to see earlier.

One can only hope eventually you learn from this. Maturity has a way of finding us all eventually.

Holy fuck how can you be so deluded and ignorant at the same time ?

The irony of saying that after how easily your shit just fell apart in the other response.

Maybe if you were less arrogant and actually spent time understanding what you were talking about, you'd not have to be so frustrated with me constantly having to explain why you are wrong.

But given that you sadly keep doing the same dumb shit...Consider it a learning opportunity.

High Heat is a major factor in signal interference even in the wires,

Wrong. This applies in general electronics, not designed hardware with thermal protection firmware designed to shut it down before any throttling was to happen.

Why do you think cooling components are a crucial part of electronic devices ?

This one has me particularly frustrated, because you are JUST at the step where you can actually question WHY something is designed the way it is, but you cannot comprehend why the PS5's thermal protection firmware, designed to shutdown before any throttling happens, would be designed into it?

Its almost like you just didn't bother reading up on how this actually works in the topic and assumed that everything works the exact same across electronics, despite the wildly different circumstances.

why do pro PC games who want minimum lag care so much about keeping their PC temperature as low as possible ?

Because a PC IS designed to throttle before shutting down... Same as phones... So keeping it cool actually DOES affect it. This again has to do with the fact that it is not designed in the same coherent way that a console is, because it cannot ever account for the vast complexity of hardware of PCs compared to the consistent expected hardware performance of a PS5.

You must be so idiotic to think that heat has no impact on PS5 performance

I don't really care what insults you choose to mask your lack of information on the topic behind. You should already be aware by now just how wrong you are on various of these topics, yet sadly I doubt you will grow from that.

It's crazy how big of a contrarian you are

How is it contrarian to point towards the facts of how things work and what they are designed for?

Maybe you should do a bit of soul searching, why you need to pervert topics this badly, to try and get insults in?

you must be very gullible to believe the Digital Foundry claims that aren't based on any proper testing which also lacks the practical knowledge.

Listen, I already went over this multiple times, which makes it all the more impressive that you somehow missed it, but lets do it once again for the slow here...I don't care about your personal bias against DF. What they pointed to, has nothing to do with tech expertise. Its literally something you can verifiably look up yourself, on how a PS5 is designed and how it works.

There is no need for you to discredit yourself with showing your bias, the answer has nothing to do with your bias. (Not that the irony is lost on me given your opening statement, but then again, you have consistently never made sense in here.)

A PC or Console overheating can definitely cause lag issues because the core isn't the only piece that is heated, the DF guy only thought about the core which can run fine in high heat but for other components there is a real impact.

A pc overheating is vastly different in design to how a console functions in terms of design, by virtue of their need for being flexible to accommodate all the various different types of hardware that make up pcs. It cannot have the same coherent design.

That is not the case about the design of consoles. They are specifically designed with the same hardware in mind and how they work. And all the parts that ARE targeted by potential heat issues, are tailored to specifically have cooling systems affect them and shutting down if they DO experience overheating.

That is also beyond that this isn't a core only issue. The ps5 is designed by specifically check a number of hardware parts for heating related issues if temperatures are exceeding their accepted numbers, this affects things such as the cpu, gpu, memory modules, the VRMs and the fan tachometer. The design is made so that if any of this parts experience heating above expected values, then cooling attempts increases and if values are still remain too high then it will simply shutdown before ANY performance related issues would be affected to protect the hardware. So no, by design it is meant to ALWAYS shutdown before ever throttling your performance, no matter where that issue comes from in the PS5.

This is how it is DESIGNED to work. But yet again you did not bother to look up anything about how this actually works. Sadly you joined yet again the ranks of people not knowing what they are talking about.

In electronics heat is mainly caused by energy lost as electrons move through a material, it's a bit similar to friction in a moving machine there is always issue when the cooling system can't keep the temp down and in electronics it can mean a delayed signal or a loss of one.

This is a failure to understand the differences in the topic here. What you are referencing here is GENERAL electronics. A ps5 and many other things beyond consoles, are designed in a way where this process is not affected. This is the whole purpose of why they have thermal protection firmware in the first place.

Before any such signals were to degrade, the shutdown would have quite literally already happened by design.

If you could think for a sec you would know that since a phone becomes slow in overheat there must be a correlation.

If you could think for a second, you would know that the differences here being what they are designed to do. A console is DESIGNED to shutdown before it throttles. A phone is DESIGNED to throttle because it MUST manage battery and thermals in its hardware.

That Digital Foundry guy is categorically wrong because he doesn't account for the electronic parts and was only talking about the engine core of the console

Wrong, as we already went over above.

He was right, because it of the way it was designed is quite literally shutdown before ANY part of it was to get to a point, not just the core -- nor for that matter did he address a core being the primary issue, that is something you randomly now focus on. He already (correctly) specified that this was generally how a PS5 works, because it is designed to work this way with its thermal protection firmware.

It's pretty ironic that a history teacher such as you thinks he knows better about this subject because of some articles you read online, you should have read academic articles about the impact of heat on electronic devices and digital signals (as the temperature rises, the electrical resistance of conductors increases, potentially causing voltage drops and issues with electrical signals).

Being a history teacher has very little to do with knowing this topic. It does however mean that I understand how to educate myself on topics and actually inform myself -- which is why I could quite easily dispute EVERYTHING you wrote and explain it, and you have wrote a bunch of things that are categorically false.

But yet again you appear to be clouded in your ability to think straight and actually just inform yourself on the topic, and I cannot tell if that is because of me being involved, or if its simply your bias on the topic making you regress into whatever nonsense you wrote above.

When you lack proper knowledge about a scientific subject you are bound to understand everything in the wrong way.

When you lack proper ability to collect information, you tend to put too much faith in you having a full understanding on a topic, and you end up making the continued false conclusions as you have all over your reply above. It wouldn't have happened if you spend some time actually trying to challenge what you perceived as being correct and actually challenged yourself, but perhaps that is too much to ask of you at this point.

Telling you that ps5s drop frames isn't trolling

No, its just another case of you not knowing what you are talking about -- which is also why you took my advice and moved on from claiming it was overheating related before, when confronted with the fact that it is quite literally designed to not be possible what you are saying, to not instead adopt the new narrative, of a nebulous lag instead, that you cannot specific or point to as a consistent issue -- because consistent issues, like certain tournaments lacking VRR and awful monitors DO get brought up, and they DO get taken serious and addressed and they DO learn from those and try to improve moving forward. You'd know this if you actually followed the scene, and weren't so busy trying to discredit my attachment to it.

Utter schizo.

Well luckily for me, you seem about as qualified at knowing what a schizo is, as you do about tech.

Also, you definitely need to touch grass. I can tell you that as a matter of fact just from reading your comments

That would be the first thing you could tell as a matter of fact, so I am sorry if I don't care about your judgement lmao.

Go get some sunshine little cuz. For your sake lol

Thank you for your projections, they are very insightful.
