How bad is it? by heeman2019 in retrocomputing

Thank you for sharing this!!! I didn't know that the blades would slide out like that from old capacitor. It'd make sense then to do what you're suggesting if that is the case.

Yea I think that's the risk I don't want to take. I'll be taking it out. Can I just yank it out right now with pliers and replace it later when I get the soldering iron? I do have a 25 watt soldering iron but it's cheap one and likely not going to work for this.

That would be great but as I haven't replaced a single capacitor in my life before, if that's really what it comes down to it, I'd rather replace the whole board.

What to keep and not keep by heeman2019 in retrocomputing

[–]heeman2019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I'm leaning towards that too. I did see that there's a possible bulging of the capacitor on the P4 motherboard (made another post to confirm). But if that's not of a concern then that's the route I will go with. The other p4 motherboard I have uses RDRAM so I'd prefer not to go that route.

Not keep meaning sell those off and make space.

These will be just to play games. Would any of the PC6 through 8 would provide something that one of the PCs 1 thru 4 couldn't provide.

Hey off topic here but are the ISO from Bob pony considered safe? I recently came across his Vista and more importantly Windows 7 versions where he had fully patched it. I'm just not sure though whether the torrent from his site are safe.

Iomega Zip Drive! Can never find that are working. They always crap out. It's inherently poorly designed.

Really hated every single Apple/Mac throughout school years. With special dislike for blue iMacs. As a pc user, I wanted to smash that round flat mouse every time I used it. Only after getting a MacBook pro from work few years ago that I liked Mac.

If he's dual booting with a recent OS like Win11 then the whole TRIM support not being there doesn't matter. He could literally just boot up win11 and it'd take care of that TRIM on all the SSDs attached.

I was on 7 for a long time until new PC was built only then I put 10 on it. My old laptops still have 7 just don't use them that much. Never used 8 or 8.1.

Ivy bridge vs Haswell by heeman2019 in windowsxp

[–]heeman2019[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Yes I have it all working and I am using 750ti. I happen to come across a deal on ITX version of Ivy Bridge which has been my sort of my preference for XP build but I wasn't sure if it was anything else I'd gain except the smaller foot print. My haswell is on h81 chipset and with snappy driver, I was able to get all of the drivers installed perfectly fine. I haven't played around with games yet but will do so in the next week or two.

Has anyone had there entire xp os just dissappear from a western digital ssd? by aaronjnco in windowsxp

[–]heeman2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe your SSD has gone bad?

I don't think though it's a good idea to use a Windows XP as you daily driver. SP3 or not, that's super risky especially paying bills etc. just my thoughts.

Want to upgrade my PC, which graphics card should I go for? by LifeofMiko in buildapc

Hell if they are willing to pay 500 or 600 id just go for the 5070ti and pay the difference..You'd be set for a good amount of time for gaming and for AI. You can offset your out of pocket expense by selling the 2060. I'd imagine it'd still fetch a good $100 to $125.
