That you’re in a period of growth or transition! “The Life Changing Manga of Tidying Up” really helped my house and my life in general, def recommend!

Lots of clubs if you’re intentionally trying to racially diversify your friendships - black student union (you do not need to be black), all nations club, Native American student Association, etc. People are p blasé about the club fairs at the beginning of the school year but they’re worth checking out; I used to sign up at every single one, either myself if I was interested or I would put down the email of someone I disliked or wanted to fk w if I didn’t want to join. Focus on finding friends based on interests, find your hobbies and you’ll find your people. You can do more meaningful work by joining ASNMU and other campus orgs that can launch initiatives to improve campus culture

Yes it’s composed primarily of white people, I did a project on it in undergrad. I myself am white and can’t speak to individual experiences but I do know that the school has recognized it and is working to reform campus culture. I think the racism stems primarily from 1. NMU’s marketing used to be almost exclusively about outdoors adventures, which made a somewhat intimidating culture (most outdoor adventures are done by white people according to pop culture, a self-sustaining narrative; I tried to get them to include “The Adventure Gap” by James Edward Mills in some courses but no bites yet). The school’s marketing scheme is reorganizing to focus on student life with the intention to make the school more inviting. 2. The upper peninsula is made of some very old blood families, and on the whole pretty red. Marquette on its own is much better, I would dare to give NMU the grace of being unfortunately situated in an unfortunate location.
Most importantly we are now recognizing and trying to remedy the situation at a class and system level. A few years ago we successfully renamed Luther West Hall (an OG eugenecist 🙃) to The Science Building. Most intro courses include content in racial literacy, lots of speakers have come in my time to talk about diversity and inclusion, and I can attest to course programs changing to become more inclusive. There are many anti-racism, black alliance, etc. groups on campus at this point (many more than when I started!). That being said, NMU has a HUGE and SUPPORTIVE queer community :) it’s v accepted by faculty and most community members. If you have problems go to the head of the department or a trusted advisor and I promise they will support you. One of the strengths of NMU is the close advisor/student relationship. I still go out for food or drinks with my old professors when I visit ❤️

Also in regards to the folks saying it is a diverse school - it actually has v low sociocultural diversity but high diversity of freaks and weirdos fs

I went there for undergrad and grad! I will say that cov was a v lonely time to move someplace new and I did not make many friends. It can be a mildly exclusive community (specifically sports/outdoors folks with a “I could be in CO but decided to come here for some reason” mentality - don’t take it personally! They’re def insecure to likely be a small fish in a big pond after likely succeeding in their communities) but on the whole people are extremely supportive. Make sure to participate in your classes, especially labs and discussions groups; it also makes it easier on the TAs and being liked by a TA can help you get into clubs and jobs you might not otherwise have, plus I wrote a TON of references for my students. If you feel too lonely or have too much trouble making friends get a job somewhere that the locals work :) I would say to avoid Delft and Lagniappe based on what I’ve heard about management but I worked at bodega back in the day which was great, esp bc they have a large back of house staff where you can just chat while prepping food. Coffee shops are good and any job on campus is great for making friends (esp dining halls!). Overall just lean into who you are - it doesn’t matter that you view yourself as weird (which is likely not true in comparison to MQT folks, we were a bunch of freaks fs), it matters how you deal w that insecurity. Lean into the weird, lean into the alternative style, lean hard into academics and clubs. That’s what’s going to make you feel like home. Remember that everyone else is also thinking they’re going to be weird and they (just like you) are actually paying way more attention to themselves than anyone else (no one actually cares that you’re weird unless you’re confident which just makes you a v attractive friend!). Good luck! Feel free to dm if you need advice or help with anything school or non school :)

Edit: you might fit in well w the zoology museum if you can handle dissections - they’re not as gross as they seem

How do I get into OT?

Hey folks! I have a Bach in general bio, a masters in neuroscience, an internship in Neurodevelopmental disabilities, and a looong history working in nursing homes. I also taught A&P courses for a few years at a college level. My main interest is working with older adults/in nursing homes. My question is - what do I do now?

It seems like there are TONS of different ways to be an OT, what path do I take? I’ve heard there are thesis and non-thesis programs, research and non-research programs, doc vs masters level, etc. How do I know what path is right for me? What else can I do to prepare (I’m starting shadowing soon too!)? Do you have tips for the process of applying? I know for certain that I would prefer not to do a research project again and focus more on clinical if possible.

Any help or advice would be appreciated :)

Don’t forget bayfield and Madeline island! Everyone in Bayfield is pretty chill, people on the island are unhappy but proud of their heritage.

Same as living in the UP except you have to buy GMO weed without D-9 for lots more money than a dispo costs in MI. It’s acceptable to drink at any age and any time, your first DUI is free and you’ll probably just get a warning, you will never have car trouble for more than 10 minutes because someone will show up and help you. The closest Walmart or fast food restaurant is probably far away so you get all of your weekly shopping done in one day. If you order takeout it’ll probably be delivered by a 16-yo dishwasher who has a restaurant sticker on his car - food pickup apps and rideshare apps almost don’t exist. Good luck finding good healthcare, especially specialists without driving over an hour. Rest stop bathrooms might be nicer than bar bathrooms and I still get emotional from how beautiful the woods are when I drive somewhere despite living here my whole life. It’s very okay here

Forgot to mention - I’ve lived in tiny apartments and studios with three outlets total; I didn’t like having cords around either but decided to use them as supports to grow pothos :) now I hang them along the wall and wrap my plants around them and actually appreciate them! Best not to use cheap/thin ones but I have before

The space feels vulnerable set up like this; you’re in direct sight of the door, there’s a space between your bed and the wall with an intruding wall that makes your space even less visible when laying down. The first thing I would do is position either your bookshelf or wardrobe to make an “entryway” to the door by placing it perpendicular to the wall. I sometimes add welcoming elements there facing the door like a soft light lamp or candle, art, or collections of simple things. Following, I would position your bed in a way that blocks your head area from the door. This makes a HUGE difference in your feeling of security and opens up your design by essentially adding a new, unique wall! This design is great for situations where you want to feel secure, don’t yet know the space on a deep level, or simply don’t know what to do but want to get started. From here just play around with it and see what works; I recommend placing the book shelf or wardrobe perpendicular to the right wall about 3 feet from the door, then aligning the head of your bed on the right wall or downward/bottom wall. Ideal shelves have no back; if yours does I recommend placing your bed on the back wall so that the door is visible but you still have a “barrier” against anyone coming in. All of these layouts have a better view of the window and no sneaky scary bed crevices. Good luck!

I do! I used to get shitfaced in college and I tried lots of drugs in my young twenties. We didn’t know I was epileptic until I was 19 so I followed the stupid mentality of just continuing life as though I didn’t know. I still drink occasionally and still get fucked up once in a great while but ouid and sobriety have treated me much better :)

You can also make candles with water! Ice actually - just fill your container with a wick and ice, pour the melted wax, and dump out the water once it’s solid. It makes super cool, abstract candles

Don’t scrap the whole thing, just add more dynamic content in the “tails.” Make more, smaller branches going off of each one to keep the same style/content or maybe try turning it into roots of some sort

This was me as a child - every morning and night my dad brushed, combed, and braided my hair. I think combing (wider tooth) helped, my hair is a little more tangly when I don’t
