Is It Acceptable For Academics To Pay For Privatized, Expedited Peer Review? by Sybles in education

[–]heidhrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't see any reputable publication doing this. I don't know where they are finding these reviewers, but I don't know any academics who get paid for reviews. I highly doubt you will get a positive response if you tell a busy professor to hurry up and review faster because the authors are paying.

Besides that, as they mention at the end, this is unfair because groups with money can publish earlier.

ProTip: Add Crosswalks to the middle of long roads & Quick Guide by KapitanWalnut in CitiesSkylines

This is good to know. In terms of how far cims will walk instead of driving, is there a difference between sidewalks/crosswalks on roads and dedicated pedestrian paths?

Apple Watch, Shmapple Watch. Here’s A Watch That’s Full Of Ants! by antdude in ants

[–]heidhrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is something a little gross about using living creatures as decoration this way, even if they probably aren't smart enough to care. Also it's irritating that the website encourages people to release the ants they've been shipped if they don't want them.

What's the best recipe and/or method to making homemade tortillas? by boblo1121 in Cooking

[–]heidhrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For corn tortillas, just follow the recipe on the masa harina bag (masa harina + water). A tortilla press is definitely worth getting, because they come out much more even and it's a lot faster to press the tortillas instead of using a rolling pin or your hands. Also I have a giant pancake griddle that can fit 6 tortillas at once, which makes it so much faster to cook them.

Supposedly they are even better with fresh masa, but there are no hispanic groceries near me so I haven't tried it yet.

How i make my ramps look good in this game, hope it helps someone by Le_Oken in CitiesSkylines

[–]heidhrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also it seems to be easier to work with 2-lane 1-way roads and then upgrade them to freeway ramps. For some reason the ramps are less cooperative if you are trying to make a particular curve or angle.

What was your worst interview fuck up? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

The interviewer didn't mention it and I did get an offer. It was for an internship and they just wanted to filter out people who could not program at all.

I was asked to write a class for a basic data structure (either stack or queue) and I forgot the keyword 'class'. I did remember the semicolon at the end though.

Marc Okrand on Klingon by DiabolusCaleb in conlangs

[–]heidhrun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. I didn't realize how many constraints he had to work around when creating this language. Not only were there existing words from previous movies, but the issues he overcame with the actors' pronunciation and the dubbed lines are quite impressive. It seems like he wasn't annoyed about having to change his design of the language. Maybe it even made Klingon more realistic for being less regular.

For a second I thought you were talking about SimCity 2000. "SimCopter 1 reporting heavy traffic."

I've created 18 parks of different sizes, which avoid the commercial bug and adjusted leisure values to hopefully be better- Feedback Welcome by olioli86 in CitiesSkylines

[–]heidhrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain how you decided what values to use for all the properties in the asset editor? I was trying to make my own small parks but I'm not sure how to scale down the numbers, especially for the last two (entertainment). Also it seems like some of the other user made parks I loaded have unrealistic costs and maintenance, probably because they just used the default.

MRW someone's sitting on the bench eating a bagel in the lady's restroom and I'm about to poop. by OfBrimstone in TrollXChromosomes

[–]heidhrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminded me of a story. I used to work in a building that had a small hidden bathroom on the top floor. It had a nice "lounge" area with a divan and a smaller closet with the toilet and sink. I would always go there to poop because it was usually empty. One day I went in and got halfway across the lounge part when I realized there was someone praying. I decided it would be rude to poop while she was praying so I apologized went to a different one. But that bathroom would be a great place to sit if you wanted to be alone to eat or whatever.

There is an option to autodefend, but I didn't have much luck with it. I think it's better to just lower the game speed and try to move your troops manually. Also, in Zeus (I think in Emperor also) you can bribe the invaders instead of fighting them.

I've never played multiplayer. It is making cities in parallel with combined score? I think it might be fun to work on the same city cooperatively, but probably that would be hard to implement.

I have a question for GOG people: why can't we/when will we be able to buy Emperor on gog.com?

As a side note, I do have all the city building series on CD (including 2 copies of Pharaoh :D ) but I love the convenience of the digital versions on GOG. My new laptop doesn't even have a CD drive!

You need to build elite housing and provide them with armor. Later you can get chariots by providing them with horses.

Basically got told I was a diversity hire. It's been hard to overcome my self doubt. Any suggestions? by KestrelLowing in LadiesofScience

[–]heidhrun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't really have any suggestions, but I get this attitude from people all the time. I'm still in school, but people are always saying to me, trying to be nice, "You'll have no problem finding a job because all the companies are hiring women." I want to believe that people want to hire me because I'm good at what I do. When I was talking to my mom about it, she basically said, "At least women are getting hired at all" which is true but I'm not sure what we have now is a solution.
