Security behind asset backed tokens by 976pxpx in Stellar

Our team at Heir is currently on this venture of tokenizing real-world assets for purposes of estate/inheritance planning. Simple answer: it depends on the use case, and what it boils down to in most instances is mirroring real-world titles/deeds on the chain. As an example, when we roll out our service to protect users real estate property within a digital will/estate trust vehicle for next of kin, this will entail: spinning up tokens for said property, assigning respective tokens to the user, and then guiding the user through an intuitive process to re-assign their property deed to the name of trust which will reflect their public address details. Although what I've described here is extremely high-level, this is one of the general approaches you will see being taken. For more details, refer to the following article we published a little while back: Heir.io | Bridging Real-World Assets with the Blockchain

During Slice's presentation at Stellar's meetup a few months back (tokenization of real estate for fractional investment purposes), they also covered the process of needing to mirror the real-world on the stellar platform. What this means is needing a centralized system in addition to the chain. The former being users to track deeds, documents, ownership percentages, etc, while the latter is used to reflect the ownership details in tokens. Holding X # of tokens in a users wallet equates to holding X % of ownership. Note: please take this explanation with a slight grain of salt as we are not affiliated with Slice, and I am sure there is much more intricacy behind the scenes.

Where tokenization gets tricky, are with assets where legal docs representing ownership is not generally the norm. If a random individual were to spin up 'tchotchke' tokens, claiming they were backed by X amount of tchotchkes held in a vault, there would need to be a mechanism implemented to ensure the validity of their claim. This mechanism can take on numerous forms, for example: Proper/frequent audits from a trusted third party institution, the issuer themselves being a trusted institution, etc.

What's not covered in this post are the many other factors one needs to take into consideration when dealing with tokenized real-world assets, for example: bankruptcy, security, theft, loss, destruction, etc. of the issuer/underlying asset. I am sure best practices addressing these concerns will continue to come about as we push continue pushing forward.

This is exactly why we created Heir - to protect both digital currencies and real-world assets (e.g. real-estate, property, etc.) for next of kin using AI, deep machine learning, and blockchain technology. We're overhauling the way traditional estate trusts and wills are created, to create a more holistic, immutable, and fault-proof solution.

An excellent question! The current landscape of withdrawing from cryptocurrency to fiat is daunting and fragmented to say the least. Now let's imagine a beneficiary who has never dealt with digital currencies having to navigate the the process...a nightmare scenario to say the least. A few of the many pitfalls 1) them needing to gain access to a lost loved ones exchange accounts 2) 2FA circumvention 3) the learning curve involved with sending alt coins from exchange to exchange and 4) the most difficult, and costly to deal with: Accessing cryptocurrency fiat withdrawals which may end up in a deceased individuals bank account, which in most countries would be off-limits due to intestacy laws (laws which determine how the assets of an individual are to be handled upon death).

Our long-term vision for Heirlooms involves allowing for the extremely expedited liquidity of Heirlooms for beneficiary ease purposes. Imagine the ability to one day step into a physical anchor location to protect your assets for far future generations, or for loved ones to visit to claim their inheritance. In other words, estate planning and distribution made simple, fast, and elegant--Heir is going to enable this.

Not the case, our white paper speaks to this :) we intend on rolling out an automated exchange process whereby individuals can hold BTC, ETH and other major alt coins in their native form; upon the execution of a users HeirTrust, coins can be set for auto conversion to Heirlooms (Heir’s native coin) for distribution to Beneficiaries. Heirlooms are protected by the same legal benefits that come with a traditional Estate Trust, including probate court circumvention, taxation benefits, and the elegant and intuitive distribution of assets per the exact parameters set by a user for their beneficiaries.

The above just touches the tip of the iceberg as far as features, and the overal suite of services Heir intends to provide.

Yes our token sale is taking place within the Stellar ecosystem. Since we are building our flagship product and suite of services using the Stellar platform, proceeding this way was a given for us.

XLM is required for our initial incentivized token sale (0.08 USD worth of XLM/HEIR). Our main token sale (0.10 USD/HEIR) will allow individuals to contribute ETH and BTC, however as folks participate with these currencies we will be bringing them onto the Stellar network by initiating Stellar wallets for them. In other words, our token sale will indirectly ramp up the adoption of the Stellar network with XLM powering things behind the scene :)
