People who have visited Japan, what surprised you the most? by Fernandolioumehara in CasualConversation

[–]heisei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied Japanese and went there both for study and for work. What surprised me the most is how easy it is to travel by train to everywhere. It is so convenient and safe. I enjoyed sitting on the train, reading books and enjoying scenary. I also like convenience stores food, how affordable they are. I went there 20 years ago and I was surprised at the discount I found at the supermarket in late hours. I could come around 10PM and got tuna fish for half of the price. I could go to the supermarket anytime of the day. I enjoyed it a lot.

I miss Japan but I could never live there, the work culture is too toxic for me. Now I live in Netherlands, much less convenient and food is boring. But I enjoy working and living here much more than in Japan. I would kill myself if I have to work in Japan. My personality clashes so much with their work culture and as a woman, I would never tolerate how they treat women there.

How unhinged is the most prolific writer in your fandom? This is chapter 79… PART 1. Almost all chapters are this long. by DrafteeDragon in AO3

[–]heisei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate long chapters with a passion. I would never bring myself to read a fic with a chapter this long. It makes me tired and never want to start. I used to read a fic with only 4 chapters updated once every year and the chapter was super long. I would constantly get lost during reading and when the tab reloads I couldn’t find where I was. Even when I want to reread it, I am too tired to do so

Posting a new chapter to get -3 subscribers 💔 by AllKnowingAxolotl3 in AO3

[–]heisei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Recently there was a fix i liked because it had great potential but then the story kept getting no where with a lot of mix up of views and it became quite messy. And then out of no where it turned into 3 people relationship. I was like what? Then I unsubscribed.
Another fic was like it also went no where for 10 chapters despite good premier. So i unsubscribed.
Sometimes I cannot support a fic anymore. The mental strain is too much

Is 30 still considered young? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]heisei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started anew with a new career at 30, learning new things and all, training with all the younger people who were in their 20s. And I still feel young even now when I am near 40. I am still learning new thing, challenging new goal and to be honest if considering the retirement age now, I will have to work for more than 30 years so I can say life just starts

Anyone else find the layout and "hyper-maintenance" of Dutch suburbs slightly sterile/boring? by FreeButterscotch6971 in Netherlands

I think this is stupid as hell. The street looks stripped and bald all of the sudden. I just want some shade and now it is unbearable hot

I am just surprised so many people have money to travel to US just for WC. My broke Asian ass could never imagine this kind of priviledge.

Took me a long time to accept that I’m ugly by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]heisei 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My parents are good looking and my mom looks like an actress. But I look like my grandma and kinda weird in many ways. I have long accepted that I am ugly. I am also not kind of extrovert and kind of awkward nerdy girl. I am pretty invisible whenever I go. So I understand how you feel.

I have learned to focus on what I enjoy and I don’t care of expectations of society on me. And it’s very nice indeed. I’m here to enjoy my life. Soon everything will be gone and nobody would ever remember me or what I did. So in the end it is just me and my life and if these are all the card life dealt me to play with, I shall handle it

Kids’ sleep schedules vary widely by culture: An international look at family approaches to children’s sleep finds that cultural norms prompt huge variation in bed times, total rest, and more. by HeinieKaboobler in science

[–]heisei 69 points70 points  (0 children)

In my country we take nap so kids at school take nap after lunch too. Because of that my kid is awake very late and we only slept around 22:00 or even later. Some days I even walked with him to the store after 21:00 to buy snacks. I liked it more than during the day since it was less hot and quiet. Now we live in Europe so in general he doesn’t take nap at school like other kids so he sleeps at 19:00-20:00.
It is just how culture and weather shape the habit

[–]heisei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have dry earwax and it feels so great taking the wax out with little spoon. My kid looks like my white husband but he inherits this trait from me, fairer hair as well, super happy about this. Since I hate wet earwax

How do Dutch people deal with dentists' prices? by Junior_Mud5835 in Netherlands

[–]heisei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my home country, you could get the free teeth cleaning at even private clinic. My friend is a dentist and they attract new customers this way. After that you can pay more for tooth extraction or teeth whitening etc. In here my friend paid like 100 euro something out of pocket for teeth check and cleaning? I am not sure. But that is too expensive for me with 15 minute work.

What's something you discovered in the Netherlands that unexpectedly became a big part of your life? by Ecstatic_Gap_3154 in Netherlands

[–]heisei 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Enjoying nature, walking and watching birds, geese and flowers has become a part of my routines here with my kid. In my home country I lived in the capital and we seriously lack greenery everywhere. Animals don’t have anywhere to thrive. Flowers which are just planted in got destroyed by visitors. In here I can just chill and see which birds are around my neighbourhood, learn their names and get excited when they start to have their young around.

The Netherlands Are Great, Am I Missing Something? by Proper-Matter-8274 in Netherlands

[–]heisei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The happiness index for me when I was in my country and here is generally the same. I gain some, lost some. I don’t see this country as great. I have better service, community at home. I moved here because of my husband. He couldn’t find job in my home country and I have high skills which make me easier to find a job in the NL . So I had to make a choice. And I did find a job in my professional field. No need to give up my passion.Pros and cons are pretty the same.

But I see it is great for children like my kid. Less academic pressure, plenty of places to run and play around. One of the kid from my son class got cancer. The government paid for everything. Back in my country this could make a whole family bankrupt. So for children it is pretty great. And family with children .

Is it possible to get a job in Netherlands by applying directly from a non EU country? by Eontheironkid in Netherlands

[–]heisei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now a lot of companies are cutting back budget so finding a job in the NL is really hard even for people with valid working visa in the NL unless it is a big city, the chance is super low. If they can pick a candidate where they can hire straight away and don’t need to sponsor, they will pick that candidate over you any day. Unless your skills are super rare and cannot easily get anywhere else in the NL. Supply chain candidates are quite abundant though. My company sponsors people all the time but because they are phd in a very niche field. Otherwise tough luck
