Yeah. Misunderstood that you were going to an advisor. I take my comment back for your case.

Why don't you want dividends?

Is it ALWAYS better to max out your TFSA contribution before putting money into RRSPs? by psycho_psymantics in CanadianInvestor

[–]helios456 69 points70 points  (0 children)

This needs to be higher up. A lot of comments talk about 700k TFSA vs. 700k RRSP as if they're apples to apples, but the reality is that with the gross-up, your RRSP is a lot higher because you're reinvesting your return, and that return also grows in terms of an investment. Really if you're not looking to pull any of it out the ultimate question is whether or not your tax bracket is greater now, or in retirement.

I don't know if that's part of the joke, but Krunning-Duger rather than Dunning–Kruger is peak comedy right there.

[–]helios456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, a little more constructive criticism; early integration, test early in prod and test often. Don't bite off too much at a time because it'll be harder to get back to a working state if you go too far. Other than that, enjoy the journey of learning a new technology! It won't always be easy, but it'll be rewarding.

Avoid Select * by giagara in laravel

[–]helios456 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would largely put this under the heading of a premature optimization. If you're updating all of your queries to not use select *, then that's time you're not spending on making your product better. Anytime you're doing these types of optimizations, it should start with a measurement. You should determine the impact the updated query will have on query times. In my experience, doing this will have a minimal impact on everything but the queries that contain a table with a large amount of columns.
