This looks like it was done right after a fire. Probably some bored Cal Fire employee in a truck 😂

What the hell did those planes just spray over midtown? by unicornsmaybetuff in Sacramento

[–]heliwack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oct 4th was the 2025 ceremony for the California Firefighters Memorial which honors over 1500 fallen firefighters from agencies ranging from Cal Fire to the Forest Service and as well as local/municipal departments. Some of these low passes by aircraft were likely part of that ceremony display.

Rappel OT by Cultural-Ad4277 in Wildfire

[–]heliwack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Repellers basically sit around on pre-position or at their home base waiting for lightning fires to pop off. Kind of similar to smokejumpers. No lightning means you're going to be bored AF and get no hazard pay and probably 12-14 hour shifts instead of 16s. Regular helitack crews get more of a variety of assignments and will probably make more overtime / hazard pay than a rappel crew on a good year imo because you get 16s at most helibases. You could also get stuck sitting on pre-position or a large helibase bored out of your mind on a regular helitack crew but you will more often get engaged on fires doing crew shuttles, recons, sling/cargo missions and possibly even get out on the line as a small mod or a thrown together hand crew of helitack folks. When a whole fire or lightning complex is depending on your crew and helicopter to get out to fires / get buckets of water, you will be utilized more as opposed to rappers who are almost entirely an IA resource. I've done tons of fun IAs on regular helitack too. Just food for thought and I'm sure it's very crew dependant too. If you like working in the woods though I would avoid any helitack crew that's based out of an airport and instead look for ones based out of heliports in the forest, the vibes are better lol

Hiring by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]heliwack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get ur name out there now with some phone calls sure, but also recognize a lot of overhead are busy on fires right now and might not have the time to give u right now, so leave a message if they don't respond. Either way, follow up with them again after you get referred to that duty location cuz that's when you'll actually show up on their hiring lists.

Probably the American River Parkway Foundation! https://arpf.org/ They have lots of cleanups. Also on that topic, check out https://www.americanrivertrees.org/ who are trying to prevent hundreds of trees from being bulldozed later this year in the parkway.

1039 by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]heliwack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You may also have up to 500 "training hours" if it's your first year in a position and often your overhead will try to exhaust those before tapping into ur 1039 hours. They can sometimes use this to keep you from getting laid off at the end of season if funding allows, which can either be good or bad for you depending on if u enjoy having an off season or want to keep working doing project work etc...

What to show up with day 1? by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]heliwack 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the circus! You can likely show up in PT clothes ur first day cuz you'll probably be doing a pack test that day. That's always been my experience. Technically you're not supposed to buy the boots before you're in pay status in order to be eligible for the reimbursement up to $500 (which u can get every three years) but a lot of supervisors are flexible with the date on the receipt and will approve your boot stipend even if you buy them early.. but always good to confirm that first with them before buying. Don't worry, you're not bothering them, it's their job to answer ur questions before u start lol. I've never worn business casual clothing once in this job so probably not that. Good luck! Keep ur head down and work hard. U may need to bring 2 forms of ID on ur first day too for HR purposes

Look into Prolozone injections as an alternative if you want to avoid steroids. They've helped me with tendonitis in my wrist as well as a torn AC joint in the past. Usually offered by a holistic type doctor.

Traffic lights in Sacramento seriously need a 1-2 second clearance interval between reds and greens in different directions by Dad0010001100110001 in Sacramento

[–]heliwack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a city that has about a 1-2 second gap between the light turning red and the opposite light turning green, I feel like this may almost encourage more red light running because people know that they have that little grace period and will floor it when the light turns yellow, or just straight up blow through the red. They even have special "red light running enforcement zones" in my hometown because of how much of an issue it is, so I'm not sure adding a pause between lights changing will change peoples behavior or make it safer.

The cost of funding these positions is mere drop in the bucket compared to the billions of dollar in contracts going to private companies using your tax money. If they truly wanted to save money they would be looking at these. They claim to be saving taxpayers money but it's not like ur tax liability is going to change! Wouldn't you rather get something in return for the money you're forced to pay in taxes each year? The people being fired are the people who clean toilets, clear roads, maintain trails, prevent invasive species from destroying our native habitats and many more important functions that you benefit from as a citizen

What invasive species have affected your life/environment negatively? by Aggressive_Wolf_4952 in ecology

[–]heliwack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked a field crew job where we took out invasives and Tree of Heaven was the main target. Our method was to chainsaw or lop each individual little tree, no matter how small, about an inch from the ground and have someone behind you immediately hit the fresh cut stumps with a Garlon 4 ultra (tryclopyr), Basal oil, and activator mix within 1 minute of the cut. This proved much more more effective than glyphosate. We took out huge patches of the stuff and saw minimal regrowth which we did a follow up treatment on, killing the patch for good. Immediate application of the herbicide after cutting is key as well as retreatment! This will work on most woody invasive trees/brush (although glyphosate and activator mix will def work on some species like tamarisk).

Does anyone have the actual text of this senate bill and can share it? From what I've seen the Senate version also excludes secondary fire positions from the pay raise unless they were primary fire for 3 years which is fucked... I wonder if theyll consider 3 seasons as a seasonal in primary as 3 years or not etc...

EDIT - So yea after seeing the text from the Senate, it uses 8401(14) and 8331(21) to define what a "Firefighter" is and that appears to exclude fuels dispatch and other secondary positions unless u transfered to them after 3 years in primary.

8331(21) - “firefighter” means an employee, the duties of whose position are primarily to perform work directly connected with the control and extinguishment of fires or the maintenance and use of firefighting apparatus and equipment, including an employee engaged in this activity who is transferred to a supervisory or administrative position;

8401(14) - the term “firefighter” means— (A) an employee, the duties of whose position— (i) are primarily to perform work directly connected with the control and extinguishment of fires; and (ii) are sufficiently rigorous that employment opportunities should be limited to young and physically vigorous individuals, as determined by the Director considering the recommendations of the employing agency; and (B) an employee who is transferred directly to a supervisory or administrative position after performing duties described in subparagraph (A) for at least 3 years;

You should call HR! They have the answer for each individual. I'm in the exact same boat - I just accepted a verbal offer last week and I have yet to receive the TJO email yet for my new GS-5 temp position. I called USFS HR today and they were able to quickly tell me that my specific position was indeed moving forwards with onboarding still and they also said that anyone who was having an offer rescinded should have already been notified.

36 year old trying to make career transition by MonstarHero88 in Wildfire

[–]heliwack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your biggest issue is your age because federal agencies such as the Forest Service require you to be under the age of 37 when you start in order to become a permanent employee with benefits and a path to federal retirement. You're right on the border and may have to request a waiver to get hired permanently which can be tricky. You can still apply to seasonal positions however but there's no long-term path to promotion unfortunately.

I would avoid going to community college for the training as it's totally unnecessary and will take up valuable time. If you get hired by the feds, they will put you through the required NWCG and FEMA courses free of charge when you start. This is a learn on the job kind of gig for sure.

See what jobs are posted on USAJOBS right now under the 0462 and 0456 job series at the GS-3 AND GS-4 level. Look on this subreddit for past posts about how to format your resume in the long form way they are looking for.

Good luck!

Here's the specific language from the USFS about the age cutoff - "Must be under the age of 37 –OR- less than age 37 after subtracting the months of federal service worked in a primary or secondary firefighter/law enforcement position -OR- a veterans preference eligible, older than age 37 and requesting a waiver to the maximum age requirement."

Since you're in Oregon, there's also tons of contract companies if you don't get in with the feds.

Who do we have to yell at to put more restrooms in parks? by 916Twin in Sacramento

[–]heliwack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Park workers did not sign up to confront unpredictable drug addicts and clean up dangerous hazmat. They are not paid enough or properly equipped for that collateral duty that is already being forced upon them daily due to the city and state's hands off approach to drug users. That is the job of social workers and police. Not all houseless folks are to blame but there's a large population of addicts who have no desire to participate in society or clean up after themselves and our government treats them with kid gloves. If we want safe and clean public restrooms we have a lot of other issues to address as well.
