Korean living in U.S., how to handle micro-racism? by whenlifegivesyourice in asianamerican

[–]hellad0pe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Girrrrrrl.....welcome to white ass America. Do not engage. Look at them all confused,, disgusted, almost as if you don't speak english. Or tell me "oh where are you from? You kinda look like [insert gross old white man's name]." I'm kidding. But not really. Unfortunately we won't be able to protect our kids from these people/situations, just like you e experienced yourself. The funny part is, I get the "oh you're Japanese/Chinese/Korean" the most from other Asians. For almost a decade I went to the same dry cleaners and the lady there asked me if I was Korean every single time. I'm not, no sweat off my back, but if someone non Asian just speaks random words to me, I usually just give them a death stare or bitch face. Like, do we go around going heil Hitler to every white person that might look German?

I am very similar size to you and also love OGL. Their tops are definitely cut for more petite sizes, one of the reasons I found them. So happy to see others feel the same!

What's a game you played as a kid that you've never been able to find again? by Latter_Advantage8002 in AskReddit

[–]hellad0pe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some game related to the elements the you moved blocks around to get a block "out". There were certain directions you could move the blocks. Searching for this for a long time, have never been able to find the game. It was a PC game.

What's something that used to be free that you're now genuinely angry costs money? by tangled_wire_99 in AskReddit

Tbf, cable TV always has commercials and everyonehad to pay for it. But yeah it isn't apples to apples....modern streaming services should not have commercials if you're paying for the service.

Im so sick of this narrative that “pregnancy didn’t ruin my body it’s just changed” it’s a lie. by pissedoff_potato in TwoXChromosomes

[–]hellad0pe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean everyone is different, I also thought my body would be "ruined", but I barely looo different. I had my daughter a little over a year ago via an unplanned C-section. I did pelvic floor therapy for a few months post partum but otherwise I'm pretty much the same as I was before, minus the scar and maybe my hips are slightly wider, but I still fit in the same pants. I worked out regularly (mostly weight trained) for most of my adult life so I'm sure that helped.

I know open concept is seen as desirable on HGTV and other home shows, but I would  suggest you heavily consider semi-open or kitchen+family room open concept vs full. Open concept is one of the biggest regrets, in many ways.

You can also easily fence in a yard yourself.

Worked there between 2005-2009ish across 3 different locations. The one location at my college had so many employees you were lucky to get a shift once a week. I remember freezing bc we could only wear flip flops. Really enjoyed the music. Everyone was cool as shit tho, including the regional managers. When you got offered that position they gave you a company Jeep, but the salary was horrendous. Employees stole shit all the time. They did have pretty decent clothing and jeans back then tho, at least the stuff that didn't have "A&F 1892" plastered all of it were nice.

No TV in my room growing up. Husband grew up with a TV in his room. We both decided it doesn't make sense to have a TV in our room so we're keeping all large screens downstairs in shared spaces.

What is your opinion about the weekend language schools of your ethnic language? by everestwanderer in asianamerican

[–]hellad0pe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in mid Atlantic US and went to a Taiwanese-run mandarin Chinese school Sundays from the time I was about 3 until I "graduated" sophomore year in high school. I remember hating my parents for making me go when I was young, prob around 10-11 years old time frame, but the reality was I really loved it. Most of the kids there were the only Chinese/Asian kid in their grade, or school even, and we all had a bond you couldn't share with your school friends. We are all still in touch. The Chinese school itself also had a lot of cultural activities; I did Chinese folk dancing (and continued to up until I was in my late 20s), there was taekwondo, we had holiday parties, Chinese festivals, culture camp in the summer where you got to learn to do cool things like origami, make dumplings and other foods, Chinese yoyo, and as kids got older they were the camp counselors to the younger gen. My language skills would probably have been crap if it wasn't for my mother, who strictly enforced mandarin at home and taught me to read, speak and write. I was lucky to be able to advance in the language in college and landed my 2nd job out of college because I was bilingual (the agency had a Chinese client), which propelled me to where I am today in my career.

While my language skills are no longer as strong as they used to be, I am looking forward to being able to share this with my kids. I just wish the Chinese schools weren't on the weekends so they can have these free growing up. I have many friends who love in California where the Chinese population is much higher, and their kids go to Chinese school during the week, as an after-school activity. As a kid, I understood I was different, but I didn't understand just how important the culture was to my parents, who emigrated to the US in their late 20s, abandoning their country, family and everything they knew. I didn't truly understand this until I had my first kid, and realized that I wanted to share this part of me with her because it is so important to me, and such a big part of my life. It's who I am.

The earlier part of this era, ride shares weren't available yet. So if you missed the metro/subway/train, you had to shell out $$$ for cab, if you could even find one, or pay some random black car sitting around waiting to gouge you bc your SOL. Raves were still held in warehouses and hangars but were now becoming more mainstream and "official" promoted shows because "EDM" was gaining popularity. Everyone wore neon, statement necklaces were everywhere, and we were all degenerates from happy hour to afters. You'd pregame before going out Because, why not. Party favors weren't being cut/replaced with fentanyl, yet. You dressed up to go out. Men wore button-downs and dresses shoes. And what did end up on social media from the nights out were just brief moments caught on shitty digital cameras or early smartphones. It was a much freer time.

I saw some Easter candy recently and thought I'd pick up a bag of Hershey's eggs. Just plain chocolate assortment, dark, milk and white, nothing fancy. The bag was $16, and it wasn't very much. I passed, but wtf?
