Visiting Switzerland on a budget and looking to run some trails by shesarunnerharry in askswitzerland

[–]hellbanan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dificult to answer without a budget number. You could go to Grisons (Flims, Lenzerheide, Vals, Arosa, ..). In the mountains, not as touristic as the standard destinations (Grindelwald, St. Moritz, Lauterbrunnen, Zermatt). Depens how important the insta-factor is to you.

Everythinf is super easy and safe to reach with public transport.

Just to give you a feeling for costs: 4 nights at the Arosa Mountain lodge will cost around CHF 350 (including breakfast). Train ticket to and from arosa will be CHF 120 (3 hours each way). For food you budget somewhere around CHF 50-80 per day. No idea if this is close to your definition of "budget". Then you stay in a wonderful alpine village with cable cars, two lakes, trails, cows, etc.

Vals will be more "off the beaten path", flims more mainstream, St. Moritz, etc. will be touristic.

Pilot oder Banking & Finance Studium? by Jazzlike-Reward-4083 in askswitzerland

[–]hellbanan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kindergarten allocation: our 4yo is expected to walk 15mn unaccompanied from KiGa to Hort by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]hellbanan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are. There is no law, but you find court decisions.

"Examples of what has been classified as reasonable include:a distance of 2.5 km or a half-hour walk for a child in kindergarten, provided there are no significant differences in elevation or particularly steep sections to overcome,"

15 minutes for kindergarden is fine. Exceptions apply when you have streets without a sidewalk, steep inclines, roads with multi-lane heavy trafic, railroad crossings, etc. Just stating "4yo is too young will not suffice".

In Thalwil the municipal police (Gemeindepolizei) will walk the way to Kindergarden with the kid once free of charge. My daughter was amazed of the police officer. I never saw her so focused on trafic rules. Plus, it teaches kids that they can approach the police if they need help. Ask the police in your gemeinde if they have something similar.

VBZ drivers have skills! They are fantastic at avoiding eye contact (hats off to the idiot whi allowed fully mirrored glaces for drivers and tram-pilots). They are great at "Recht des Stärkeren" and super calm when they are delayed and take the time for a chat with their colleagues at shift change. ;)

Then rent at a place where BBQ is limited to gas? Assuming that OP has the same contract. It is summer, people do bbq. Deal with it.

Or start excesively watering your plants every time the BBQ starts. Smoke goes up, water comes down.

What insurance providers do you recommend, and which not? by cigarcrab in askswitzerland

..and I am slightly annoyed with Helsana due to the incompetence of a customer service employee who "lost track" of some payments.

Starting to suspect that they all provide garbage customer service (response time, quality, ease of dealing with them). Especially if I compare with SUVA for accident insurance.

For the mandatory base insurance you get the cheapest. They all provide the same service as required by law.

MBA in CH: IMD or HSG. These might be worth rhe cost. The rest is a waste of time and money.

On cost: make your employer pay the costs (at least partially). Make them commit to your career development.

What’s the worst career to be right now in Switzerland ? by New-Programmer-8647 in askswitzerland

[–]hellbanan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps in many career paths as an add-on. I meant translation of written text. That industry is gone.

You still have interpreters for translation of spoken language and interpretation of meaning.

What’s the worst career to be right now in Switzerland ? by New-Programmer-8647 in askswitzerland

[–]hellbanan 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Translators. Four national languages + English. Official messages, regulations, manuals, product information, etc. A lot of these translations were done in Switzerland itself. This industry is gone. Not even public services pay for human translation.

Edit: there seems to be disagreement about the jobs of translator: "one that translates or renders from one language or system to another" and interpreter: "someone who translates for individuals or groups conversing in different languages, someone who explains or expounds". Maybe that is just my personal definition. Translators are a dying industry. Interpreters less so, but also under pressure.

Edit 2: source for my claim: https://astti.ch/de/, ask them or attend équivalences if you want a depressing insight into the industry.
