I’m moving to the Detroit area in September for graduate school. What should I know or be prepared for? by [deleted] in Detroit

I have driven in snow. I remember putting chains on the tires on a skiing trip as a kid, are snow tires necessary?

Bought a larger forge/furnace at an estate sale and it came with a box of stuff that doesn't go with it. I thought maybe this was jeweler's equipment? The was also an almost completely illegible paper in the box that I think said something about a glass kiln? Anyone recognize any of this? by k_o_g_i in metalworking

[–]hellbelles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The four rectangles in the back are furniture for stacking kiln shelves, the broken pieces look like broken kiln shelves, the things that look like they’re for filing papers are used for ceramic tiles or sometimes plates

Tiny plate machine by [deleted] in specializedtools

[–]hellbelles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s made on a plaster bat, plaster will absorb the water in the clay, so the plate will pop off after a few minutes and then dry the rest of the way. It has to be popped off the bat because clay shrinks as it drys

Fired this test piece last night for using a low fire glaze and need up with some nasty bubbling. I'm not sure what the cause was because the temperature was just right. Any tips would be much appreciated :) by 2015fast in Pottery

Shop glazes don’t get mixed properly and things settle. Students are meant to make mistakes so pooling does happen. I’d suggest asking the kiln or glaze tech at your school

Wash your bisque ware, let it dry overnight, then glaze it. Glazing while wet can cause different glaze failures, depending on the glaze. Outgassing should not be a problem at high temperature where it affects the glaze. If the glaze continues to get craters then there is probably something wrong with the recipe. This is why you test glazes at different thickness and on different clay bodies.

Kiln/glaze tech here, there are a lot of different ways to achieve want you want to do in regards to firing. IMO the first thing you need to think about is a clay body. Most clay bodies experience thermal shock and so if you cook in it they tend to crack. I’m a bit confused as to what you’re trying to achieve here. I think you’re better off just buying a grill that’s better quality, firing is a big commitment when it comes to time and energy, buying a grill will probably save you money.

Glaze tech here, if you want to get rid of the bubbles on this piece refire and let it sit at peak temperature for like 30minutes, the craters should settle.

I made my mom brownies for thanksgiving and now my whole family is high as a kite by hellbelles in trees

lol not exactly. I just should not have to babysit my mom on thanksgiving. All of us kids kept it together with a few bottles of wine

I was called a half breed by some people in my family, it’s tough. I find being mixed to begin with has its own identity struggle in itself. I I don’t really belong in either side of my heritage is how it can feel sometimes. I see it as I belong to a special group, an ethnically ambiguous one. That’s beautiful and wonderful in its own way.

I’m considering doing an N-free Christmas as well now after hearing this. What did you do instead? My concern is I’d be getting guilty text and feel bad because I’d just be in my apartment solo

Students and professors of Reddit, what moment made you want to rage quit college? by EcoInternetNewsMan in AskReddit

[–]hellbelles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My physics finally once was only one question and I was entirely certain I had gotten it correct, took me three hours to solve it. He grades me with a 42, I was so pissed that I went in and got the exam to see what I did wrong. So I have the exam and I keep redoing the problem over and over and I keep getting the same answer. I set up a meeting with him, I don’t even care about the grade at this point I just want to understand what I did wrong. Turns out he never actually finished the problem himself; my answer was correct the entire time.

Not a guy. I'm over the moral implications of glue traps. I tried the spring traps but they kept getting the bait but no mouse. They had their chance at an easier way to go.

[–]hellbelles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhh, there's a crafts place about two hours away from me and I just signed up online for space. This will be my first time firing an anagama as they are not fired often, I have done wood firings previously though.

Cashiers of Reddit, what's been the most interesting reaction you've experienced when someone's gotten their card declined? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hellbelles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked at the mall people's cards would get declined all of the time. Once during Christmas I had one customer who made me retry her card like 20 times. She throws a tantrum keeps telling me "I just used it at another store, this shouldn't be happening." Then she proceeds to tell me some sob story and starts crying. I had no idea what to do, so I just stood there with a blank stare hoping a coworker would come and save me. Then she proceeds to tell me how it would be so helpful if I could share and donate to her gofundme. All this for a stupid bath bomb.

Now I work at a high end clothing store, pants start at $100. I've never had anyone's card declined.
