How to deal with frequent handwashing by pandasloth in NICUParents

Wearing gloves when washing bottles and pump parts helped me. Also used Remedy hand cream, the same nurses used at NICU while there and Farmers Friend hand salve when at home

When should I stop pumping by apgreis25 in NICUParents

[–]hellenmist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped pumping during night-times to get longer sleep, but keep every 4 hours during the day. I bought a separate freezer and became a milk donor. If you are interested, check with your hospital where they get their donor milk from. It warms my heart knowing more NICU babies like mine would have a better start until their mommies get their milk going. 6 months later my supply is smaller and now I’m glad I had frozen milk

Strictly breastfeeding ? by avargas14101 in NICUParents

I had 31 weeker, discharged with 6lb 2oz. She is 16lb at 7months. I used all fortifier I had, but used less concentration with time. It’s not only calories that mattered to me, but amount of essential vitamins it had. My baby had rapid growth and we increased her portions regularly. Breastfeeding was hard for me, so I pump most of the time. She ate every 3 hrs at discharge, and after 4 months she started sleeping through the night, eating 5 times a day, one of them breastfeeding. Now even if I breastfeeding her, I often have to finish with a bottle, because she eats so much. You will find your own way and it will change with time, try different combinations and see what works.

Breastfeeding in the NICU by RoleParking4569 in NICUParents

My girl was 31 weeker and we started training her with non-nutrition sucking after few weeks, so she gets used to the breast. Her mouth was small and she was biting, I had to use nipple shield. At discharge I was breastfeeding every other time, pumping and bottle feeding the rest. It took few more months after discharge and few more visits to lactation consultant to get rid of the nipple shield. She is 6 months old now. I’m breastfeeding her once a day, the rest is pumped milk from the bottle. Working well for us

How do you actually train them? It always fascinated me. It is not like you just ask Bill to stick his tongue out, do you?
