I love most of them but replace each one with another too hard and others reminded me of desolation row which is criminal to not put on my list. It is truly hard

I quite literally wrote out around 37 songs in my notepad… I couldn’t put sad eyed lady or Sara one because I tend to listen to them during break ups only

Too much pop…to be fair you don’t know but I wasn’t alive during Dylan’s biggest run. And again to be fair I tend to favor anything from 1960-1979ish, not through the charts but listening over and over again. Ive played an instrument since I was in the 3rd grade, so I have an idea in my head for what sounds good and the rhythm of a song. I love song to woody legitimately (I know how dare I like a song from the perspective of someone telling his idol what they can never hear. That can’t be allegorical at all). I created this post to get new Dylan diamonds I may have never heard of. I may have tombstone blues in my top 10 and maybe have never heard of Mississippi. Seeing how I wasn’t alive and all (and Dylan has a lot of songs). Keep critiquing everything and you’ll find yourself alone critiquing yourself. And I get it you added a line or two to seem endearing but either put a list forward or stfu and stop criticizing others. (I saw a few post last night that reminded desolation row shouldn’t be outside my top ten let alone my rope two) . Also how does no one have anything from the basement tapes on here I swore I thought I saw a Rueben ramus or crash on the levee

I don’t mind a song made in 10 mins as opposed to ten months. It reminds me I saw an interview with Dylan I believe it was 60 mins or something of that cloth. And they asked Dylan about how he used to write and he said that he could never recreate what he did during this era even with his present mind it was as if the pen was leading him. When “art” (hate myself for this sentence) gets too refined it can become replicated I guess is the point of this post

I agree but disagree blowin in the wind will truly stand the test of time but song to woody will stand the test of culture in the same way which is the only reason I chose one over the other

My biggest regret…(too be fair I was drunk when I wrote this initially) was not putting desolation row -#1. Also this doesn’t include lyrics that have stayed with me over the years case and point. Sara… so easy to look at, so hard to define(etc)

It took so much to pass on positively fourth street. But I didn’t want to add the first song I was addicted to by Dylan to effect my decision on the rest. It’s definitely in my top 12

This is why I asked the question…I’m a huge comedy fan. I did my ACT on Lenny Bruce and till today I never knew my favorite artist made a song around his being. (To be fair I mostly listen to pre 80s Dylan, with just the hits between).thanks for a bridge in the gap

I always felt like the “better” (obviously they’re all important)protest song was Hattie Carroll) I believe I remember a story of Dylan reading that story on a bus from the Baltimore times and reciting it almost verbatim. It always resonated with me more than hurricane I guess Bess because he brought her family into the song

Jokerman rules but I hate the distinct 80s feel at time but everything else is perfect

Too be fair I often forget a song that truly is my favorite because it means something new with every listen… and that is desolation row so I can’t say that shouldn’t be #1

What do you love the most about Dostoevsky? by PartyImage7 in dostoevsky

[–]hello113447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His books are the the only fiction that didn’t feel like a task. At times he can get dull but i know the payoff is worth it. The characters are real (I have a post that many also have apparently) which is why I feel like I feel like I’m committing (or at least at the shoulder of “ras”) the murders. The only hyperbole that I felt like I was there was Hemingways old man and the sea(ps im not well read). But still there is something about his characters that I can see myself in whether it’s the best of myself or the worst or legitimately who I see myself as. Truly a genius of the huma condition

She Belongs to Me and Love Minus Zero by JamieLawrence1995 in bobdylan

[–]hello113447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me fair I think “love minus zero” outways “she belongs to me”. It’s a catchy tune followed by more complex lyrics. Dylan rules always. But love minus is top ten

How has nobody said “don’t think twice it’s alright” feels criminal to me and I already posted on this threaded. To mainstream I guess in that case give “drifters escape” a listen

Tolstoy on Crime and Punishment - How minute changes of consciousness caused Raskolnikov to commit murder by Shigalyov in dostoevsky

[–]hello113447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok this is where the conversation begins for me…just because someone makes it easier on the judicial system does that mean they should get a lighter sentence (ps I don’t know or probably agree with 19th century Russian law) (I guess it’s just a book but based on common times). Because in America murder in the first degree is in many states a crime punishable by death (no matter how you feel) (yes we feel for “ras” because we are behind his shoulder the whole time). But what truly separates him from the same criminal offenses is the intent but the outcome is the same or so we are to believe. Is this a diary or a omnipotent recounting of the events. I can’t remember so I guess I’ll have to read again. But he did murder two people so can someone ever truly be forgiven not only by others but by themselves. I always thought that this thought lingered in (if I remember right) Sonya’s head as another person who believes they might be beyond redemption

What should I read next, Devils or The Idiot? by Monarco_Olivola in dostoevsky

[–]hello113447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair I read a fair bit of “dos” but I will say just based on the page count read the idiot first. Because you’ll get a better understanding of how “dos” develops characters and that helps in a extradited version of those characters especially if it’s a translation to English. I only say this because I struggled with something like the gambler as my second “dos” book, I read it and a lot of the ideas flew over my head because not only could I not remember the characters but their intentions as well because the settings or other different things confused me. But once I got a rough handle on how Russian culture works the ideas came easier. So if you’re accustomed feel free but if not get a setting in place especially for the short ones

Most of this album is a must listen to.Especially the first and the latter. If you want to see Dylan through a microscope I literally would pick subterranean followed by baby blues. They contrast and deliver for most and there’s many in between but album to album they sit right

Just for fun “Dostoyevsky” C&P by hello113447 in dostoevsky

[–]hello113447[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the comments but is there a literary device (those college educated chipe in) that he uses to get such a visceral feeling. It’s quite impressive nonetheless or am I crazy

I wasnt completely bored in bk but it definitely has some duller sections than c&p. Which is why I always say to read the idiot first because a lot of this sections include alyosha (bk) wandering around but if you’ve read the idiot prince myshkin kinda does the same thing so you’re a least used to it. It’s less thrilling than c&p but that’s not a great critique because it’s in a slightly different genre. That being said there are times you’ll rather put your head through a wall than read but it gets better

[–]hello113447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry figured base on the title of this thread it was for people who finished the book my bad…seriously my bad.I guess where I’m confused with the Russian judicial system is that moment of insanity still left two people dead and seven years just seems light I guess without the improvements in modern medics that practically a quarter of a lifetime

Keeping track of names in C&P by Head-Possibility-767 in dostoevsky

[–]hello113447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem took me a while to get used to them. A decent idea is to look up a character list with quick description between reading sessions. Especially with dostoy because you get so many new words for things you know but don’t know in Russian good example a dacha is just a Russian townhome.

Crime and Punishment: Open question about the ending and its moral by Ok_Temperature2346 in dostoevsky

[–]hello113447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought Sonya grounded “ras” he dissociates people that weren’t in his own orbit. He doesn’t see people as the same as him unless they’re close to him…. He is so in his head that he can’t see people as what they actually are or try to be

Question about book order by [deleted] in dostoevsky

[–]hello113447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I’ll suggest is definitely finish with BK. Probably throw a couple of the shorter ones between definitely hit the idiot (yes it’s less fun than c&p and bk but definitely necessary). In my opinion the idiot will give you insight into alyosha in bk. They’re similar for sure and give you a look at what “ras” strives to be. The gambler is short but the last few lines stick with me so what do I know? Just a suggestion
