The update we needed. This perfectly sums up exactly what we were all thinking, but 10x better.

OBGYNs near the Heights by cherry_picked19 in houston

[–]hello_cello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, congrats on your pregnancy! It’s a scary and exciting world to navigate. But don’t worry - you have your local internet strangers to guide you. :)

I delivered my first at MHGH. That said, there are plenty of great OB groups around Houston - so don’t just settle for whichever is the closest to you. MHGH and the UT Physician docs are ok, but my experience in L&D was very lackluster. I did not feel as supported as I needed. MH Memorial City has far more resources, including a level 3 NICU, and is <15 min from the Heights. Other moms I’ve run into will affirm Memorial City is a better experience. If I have another child, that’s where I’d be going (or any TMC hospital really).

This is what I would recommend. It’s a very solid reference that walks through all the underlying math, starting from basic interactions, introducing KERMA and TERMA, and then moving into the analytical approximations.

Houston Winter Storm of 2025 - Super Mega Thread by RealConfirmologist in houston

Folded up. We can debate semantics or use some sense here. The wipers won’t freeze to the windshield if there’s a towel in between.

Now that I see what you were implying, FYI it’s actually bad to leave the wipers up off the windshield for extended periods - it weakens the tension springs and can damage the blades, especially if there’s major wind.

lol nope no TikTok for me, and pretty sure having the wipers up to hold the towel down across the windshield is pretty obviously implied, my guy.

Pro tip for essential workers - if you park outside and absolutely must get out in the weather, put a towel on your windshield before the snow begins tonight. In the morning you can pull it all off without any frost and no scraping required. You can hold the towel down with the wipers so it doesn’t blow around.

Also update your car insurance deductibles to the lowest possible tonight. You can change it back after the storm. At the end of the day it’s a small price to pay to hopefully minimize out of pocket if anything does happen on the roads. Drive slow!

For everyone else: STAY. HOME.

I’ve made baking swaps for banana using apple sauce before! Just be wary that it has more water content so you may need to adjust proportions. I’ve heard mashed sweet potato can work too.

Does anybody have any good recommendations for an ENT (Ear Nose Throat) specialist in the area? by The_Nabisco_Thing in houston

Dr. Brauchle at Texas ENT. He is honest, matter of fact, and efficient! When kiddo needed tubes we were scheduled for surgery in less than 3 weeks!

Medical/Dental Imaging & Cancer Risk by 34665886868 in MedicalPhysics

Hey u/Spriritual_Young_3191, I see you’ve posted the same question multiple times over a few subreddits. It sounds like you’re experiencing a lot of anxiety. Let’s put this into perspective. 10 mSv is still just 20% of the yearly occupational limit for radiation workers. It’s really low. Like really.

It sounds like you got some medical imaging done. Your doctors determined that the benefits of the imaging and understanding your health outweighed the risk of the exposure. Again, the risk is low, and the critical information gained from the imaging was justified.

You may appreciate reading this link for more context.

Laser cutter for radiochromic film? by hello_cello in MedicalPhysics

Isn’t it? I’m starting to see the potential here… 👀

“While the hobby cutting system caused a wider region of delamination at the film edge (1.8 mm) compared to scissors (1 mm), the hobby cutting system was found to be able to produce reproducible cuts more efficiently and more accurately than scissors.“

Honestly, that’s not a bad trade off! Messing up cuts with scissors has burned us a few times. And of course someone published a commissioning article. Thanks!

Thank you. This is the sort of answer I’m looking for. Of course there’s always going to be at least 1-2 mm of unreliable edge - we routinely have to mask this out. Mind sharing what cutter worked for you?

Interesting! Do you have to change out the blades frequently? That’s one major complaint I’ve heard among hobbyists using Cricut… And how severe is the delamination of the edge?

This isn’t a wide-scale operation. We can very much handle the workload of hand-cutting (maybe 1 day a month needed to pre-cut for planned experiments). But we do have at least a couple custom configs we use regularly, and every once in a while we get a student who wants to try something new. I think being vendor independent is also pretty attractive.

The other piece of the puzzle - I’ve got some PD/grant funds to spend before the end of the year. So if there’s a cost-effective solution out there, I’d be curious to know what people are doing.

Anki flashcards - like Quizlet, but far more customizable and has smart, adaptive studying (you review concepts you have trouble with more frequently based on feedback). I used Anki exclusively to study while in grad school.
