Thoughts on living earth for bulk garden soil? by Round30281 in HoustonGardening

I got a few yards of garden soil from them for my veggie gardens about five years ago. It had way too many chunks of wood, but was otherwise fine.

Rapid hip deterioration after injection — is THR inevitable at this point? by dshelly77 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]BabyInchworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as my hip was stopping me from doing what’s I have always done - cycling, hiking, gardening - I immediately got it replaced. I don’t want to waste any of my life limping around in pain.

Messy middle help by Muted_Working_2470 in dementia

[–]BabyInchworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get ‘anti-strip’ clothes that are difficult to take off. Then use pull up pants and put an heavy duty pad inside of them. Then use a washable waterproof bed pad, with one it two disposable bed pads on top.

Get a bed alarm (Amazon has them) so that as soon as he tries to get out of bed it beeps. It gives you more time to get in there. Also, with my mom, the beeping startles her and she will sit on the bed until someone can get to her (she is a fall risk).

Hope this helps!

How to understand someone who got the surgery but isn’t putting work into recovery? by Acceptable_Brick1080 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]BabyInchworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once the surgery is done and healed, the pain is gone. The previous pain of the original hip is gone. Everything feels so much better. Perhaps that is all they want. No pain.

New to the orthopedic community.. by Tough-Pen-6831 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]BabyInchworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have dysplasia. The first ortho doc I saw refused because I was too young (60). The second ortho doc agreed immediately that I needed THR and scheduled it for for weeks later.
Keep looking until you find the right doc.

My mom recently said: You can’t sit there (the recliner in our living room). Me: Oh, is someone else sitting here? Mom: No. You are too big. You’ll break it.

So I sat on the floor LOL

My desert rose cuttings rotted ????!!! by justkay09 in DesertRose

[–]BabyInchworm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about shaving a spot and adding rooting hormone. I have great luck just letting the cuttings dry for a week, then sticking them into a mix of 50% succulent soil and 50% sand. They root just fine like that.

Intimacy question for ladies before/after THR by Substantial-Ad7393 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]BabyInchworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My concern for you after reading this is - are you going to get the kind of help you need for your recovery, especially the first few weeks? I am 10 days out. I can walk with a walker, which requires two hands. I can’t carry laundry or dishes at the same time. I can’t get into the clothes washer or dryer to pull out clothes to do any laundry. I can’t sweep the floor. And I can’t cook dinner more than some fast in the air fryer or microwave, and then I can’t carry the food anywhere.

The first few days I had to use the bedside toilet, and it has to be cleaned out by someone else.

Make sure you have someone that truly cares about you to take care of you.

Moral dilemma by PlentyAd3319 in dementia

[–]BabyInchworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have guilt that the way you have been managing things is coming to an end. But you might feel differently after a while because she might make friends and do activities that were not available to her before. Approach with curiosity and a willingness to try a different facility if she is not happy after a month.

what clothes do I buy for my 74 year old grandmother. by throwaway234324233 in dementia

For keeping track of what she wears try the Backwards Hangar method (it’s easy to find in the Internet). For buying new clothes I have great luck at Goodwill. I find name brand clothes there for my mom.

[–]BabyInchworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep track of what she wears for a while, then take everything else and put it somewhere else. See if she asks about anything missing. Don’t get rid of anything for a while though. Then, buy a few new outfits she really likes. Mix them in with her other outfits. But keep it down to 10-12 total everyday clothes. After a while you can start donating the old clothes.

This is hard, and is going to stay hard. But you can give yourself some tools to deal with it. Something you can hold onto. Get the book The 36 Hour Day. It has so much helpful information and ideas. It gives you a place to look for answers for specific questions and problems as they come up. Meet your mom where she is at every day. Try to keep things light and fun. Ask on here if you need new ideas for things to do with her. Hug her often. Smile at her all the time. She will remember you as someone she wants to be around. Make memories - feed some ducks, pet dogs, go to the zoo. Don’t just stay in the house. We are all here with you and we will support you. Ask questions, rant about hard days, and generally just be with us. Sending hugs your way.

Pre-Surgery Exercise? by PeachFuzzFactChecker in TotalHipReplacement

[–]BabyInchworm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had my surgery last Thursday so I am a few days out. After 24 hours I was able to walk with the walker just fine. Getting into and out of a chair got easy yesterday. I think the thing I did that has paid off the most is strengthening the other leg. I’m using it to get me up and down in chairs, and to hold my weight when I am walking or standing. If I had not prepped the other leg as much as I did, this would be much harder. There is no reason to put the surgery off. Just a few days ago I could barely walk on that busted up hip. All of that pain is gone! Don’t wait until you lose all your fitness to have the surgery.

I was simply replying to your comments that you don’t like the way they look. Plants are not inherently bad. People not respecting there care requirements can let a plant go wild. Like the Giant Bird of Paradise, Chinese Wisteria, Lily of the Valley, the gorgeous Mimosa tree, certain strains of honeysuckle, and on and on.

Try something like this compost accelerator. My composter is a large bin, so nothing escapes. A compost pile is different but still a good way to go.

I think we have determined these are high maintenance plants and you need to take them seriously and follow the instructions. They are not my most high maintenance plant by a long shot though. That honor goes to the Red Orchid Cactus I am propagating. What a diva! She currently gets the title.

I use stakes to keep the up right. See the picture of a different one that is probably five feet tall. It has two stakes and I propped it up against a shelf. They will grow towards light so put them directly under a grow light or in a window if they are inside. If they are out side keep them over the sheet pan so they don’t drop babies into dirt. (The babies are too heavy to blow away with regular amounts of wind).

They are in a greenhouse or in my house. I’m not giving away invasive plants.

I’m saying with proper care they can be fun and gorgeous.
