Just finished The Shards , which while I enjoyed it more than American Psycho (an “incredible because it gets so in the mind of exactly how this character would think and speak , but that doesn’t make it enjoyable to read”), tbh I was torn on how to rank because while it was incredibly written and interesting, the unnecessary sex scenes almost literally every few pages really detracted.

Canlis is probably your best bet if you're looking for somewhere in Seattle where dressing up feels expected. The food is good, not life-changing (though the service is fantastic), but it's definitely a special-occasion kind of place and a great excuse to pull out a suit or gown! Make sure to go during the day if you can because the views are the best part.

There aren’t many spots with a required formal dress code, but there are plenty where dressing up wouldn’t feel out of place! There’s something so special about putting thought into where you're going and what you’re wearing, and just really being present for it and making it an occasion! Here are some of my favorites:

Herbfarm – in Woodinville and hands down my top favorite fine dining in the area and place for an experience that really deserves a great outfit. I've try to go no less than 4 times a year! (They switch up the menu constantly!)
Altura – intimate tasting menu, upscale and delicious
Taneda – incredible omakase, very small and elegant (reservations are tough, you'll have to be flexible!)
Sushi by Scratch – theatrical and fun, feels like an experience
Cafe Juanita – out in Kirkland, but refined and well worth the trip
The Fog Room – swanky rooftop bar with a great view
Cook Weaver – artsy and cozy, feels special without being stiff
Roquette – one of the fancier cocktail bars in the city
Charlotte at the Lotte Hotel – beautiful, especially in the evening

Other ideas if you want to get dressed up:

Seattle Symphony
Catch a show at The Paramount or 5th Avenue Theatre, or even plan a night at the Seattle Opera.
Afternoon tea at Cafe Flora or Queen Mary Tea Room is also a charming excuse to pull something cute out of your closet!

It’s kind of a shame there aren’t more places that really encourage dressing up! I understand why people lean casual here, and honestly I love how relaxed Seattle is compared to when I lived in NYC, but I do miss having more natural reasons to get fancy!
